201 | God is not the author of evil. | Job | Parable | 99139
The depravity of man is not in question, however I note that man was originally created good and will be restored to that original condition by the grace of God. Paul also describes that what good he wants to do, he does not, and what bad he wants to avoid, he does. I note that Paul does admit to having good intentions, but that he lacks the ability to follow through on them. Only through the power of the Holy Spirit can we do that. Paul also admits to his desire to avoid sin, but that he cannot resist it. Again, we can only do so through the power of the Holy Spirit. I submit therefore that while we lack the ability to do good or avoid sin on our own, in our hearts we can have these as goals. Do you concur? |

202 | God is not the author of evil. | Job | Parable | 99271
Yes, I concur. I should have emphasized this in my previous note.
203 | Is satan omni-present? | Job 1:1 | Parable | 100318
No. Satan is not omnipresent. In the beginning of Job, he is clearly presented as having been wandering the earth. This does not mean that the enemy does not have his agents stationed in many places nor that Satan cannot travel freely. However, Christ has defeated Satan and death, so the work of evil in the world is a last ditch effort to cause damage before the final closure of history when Jesus returns. Regarding our flesh, until we are resurrected, we will have to struggle with our carnal nature. |

204 | Do animals know God? | Job 12:7 | Parable | 51486
Given the following verses, what can be said about a) the awareness of God or b) the relationship with God that animals may have? Job 12:7-10 "But now ask the beasts, and let them teach you; And the birds of the heavens, and let them tell you. Or speak to the earth, and let it teach you; And let the fish of the sea declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this, in whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?" Col 1:23b "...the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven,..." Parable |

205 | what understanding DO animals have? | Job 12:7 | Parable | 51506
Mommapbs, Thanks for sharing. I can relate to both things you have learned from Creation and I agree with you that "all creation is a testimony to THE Creator." However, my question relates more to another remark you made, i.e. "but only man can KNOW God in the relational, intimate sense of the word." Do you have any biblical references that support this exclusivity of knowing? In terms of your remark, my question may be restated in two parts, "if Creation is a testimony to the Creator, to whom is this testimony directed?" and "if all creatures are witness to this, what does that imply about their awareness and/or relationship with the Creator?" The verses I cited seem to suggest that at least some kinds of animals know that God is responsible for Creation, e.g. "Who among all these (beasts, birds, earth, fish) does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?" -- Job 12:10 What else does the Bible say about animals and God? 206 | God as creator should be obvious | Job 12:7 | Parable | 51547
Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I agree with what you have said about Man being made in the image of God and having the breath of life. I think the situation with the donkey in Numbers may be a special case because the Lord appeared to the donkey but not to Balaam until his eyes were opened. This accomplished the Lord's purpose in bringing Balaam to recognize his sin. It demonstrates at least that when God chose to show himself, the donkey did in fact see Him. Yet, its not clear if the donkey knew He was the Lord. Job 12 suggests a more general situation with the animals, i.e. that they know God is the Creator. I am fascinated by this idea because it would seem then that mere animals have knowledge that many people reject! Also, isn't Romans 1:20 saying pretty much the same thing, that the truth of God and Creation is obvious? |

207 | what understanding DO animals have? | Job 12:7 | Parable | 51549
Interesting answer. My take on Job is that the animals don't need to read his words because he's saying they already understand the truth. It is we who need to read his prophecy and if we don't believe, he exhorts us to ask the animals. By the way, unlike many who ask about animals, I'm worried about their eternal fate. I know God is just and loving and as far as I know, animals don't sin, so I trust Him to do with them as he pleases and they will be fine. Regarding 1 Cor 9:9, it is clear this is an analogy for people and oxen are merely the device. Yet, to me, this seems quite different from what Job is saying about the animals per se rather than what people do to them. Parable |

208 | when is literal interpretation wrong? | Job 12:7 | Parable | 51552
Yes, this is possible. The main point clearly is that God is the Creator and the testimony of the animals is being used as supporting evidence. It is not clear if the animals testify (actively) or if we are to infer something from their existence (defacto). We must be careful not to assume anything we don't understand (or doesn't fit with our present understanding) like) is poetry, allegory or analogy. By what measure can we know when scripture is not to be interpreted literally? |

Hank, You are anything but common or run-of-the-mill! I have always found your comments to be insightful, helpful, respectful toward others and sometimes funny. Dr. Doolittle, indeed! Parable |

210 | The Bible and Science, #2 | Job 26:7 | Parable | 51371
The Book of Job is thought to be the oldest book of the Bible, written perhaps 4000 years ago. Yet, in 26:7, it is clear that the author understood that the earth is floating in space. Other cultures at that time or since then thought the world was riding on the back of a giant cosmic turtle or otherwise supported by something solid underneath the entire world, e.g. Atlas. 211 | addicted to porn-help | Psalm | Parable | 109364
The issue with pornography is of course lust, which has at least two spiritual aspects. The most obvious is that indulging in pornography reduces others to physical objects that you use to gratify your carnal desires. This is not loving them. The other is a diminished understanding of yourself as a child of God and this is not loving God, in light of all He has done for you to make it possible for you to have a holy relationship with Him. The next time you are tempted, pray for God to show you the way out, which He promises to provide. You cannot escape on your own strength or willpower. You must depend on God to help you with this. I suggest also that you reflect on the people who have been used to produce the pornography, for they are loved by God as much as you are. Remember that they are people in need of Him and in need of your compassion, not your exploitation. Also, think about those who profit from this "industry". Your addiction supports all the wickedness that goes into producing porn, which leads others into greater and greater sin and financially rewards those who mock our Lord and use the creatures made in His image for their own selfish gain. |

212 | Why should we obey God? | Psalm | Parable | 109522
We should obey God because we need to be under His authority. When we live according to our own will, we find only death. By accepting His lordship over us, we find life. We can trust Him to do the right thing for us, whereas we must beware our own desires, for they have been shown time and time again to be unreliable.
213 | addicted to porn-help | Psalm | Parable | 118350
I have just finished reading an excellent book that may help you understand and address your situation. It is "Sex, Men and God: A godly man's road map to sexual success" by Douglas Weiss. Basically, his thesis is you are not addicted to porn, you are addicted to the powerful chemicals produced by your brain that are released to your brains' pleasure centers during sexual climax. This chemical response becomes associated with whatever you look at during orgasm. Weiss explains how this dynamic is established, as well as how to apply godly principles, backed by scripture, to overcome this addiction and replace it with a healthy biblically-based sexuality. Also, without endorsing or condoning masturbation, he explains how three different kinds of masturbation lead to three different consequences in a man's life. There are questions to answer that help you identify where you are on the spectrum and specific suggestions for how to stop destructive behaviors and replace them with healthy attitudes and lifestyles. The point is, there is hope, but you must be willing to confront your situation honestly and take steps to change. The first is to accept God's way and reject man's. I cannot recommend this book enough to both Christian men and women. Parable |

215 | Prescription for living? | Ps 14:1 | Parable | 142592
A secular friend has suggested that the world would be a better place if we would just live such that it doesn't matter if there is a God or not. What does the bible say about this approach to life, pro or con? I'm interested to know if this principle for living is compatible with a biblical worldview or not. Thanks |

216 | prescription for living, rephrased? | Ps 14:1 | Parable | 142594
Yes, of course. I agree that respect for God is the beginning of wisdom. But the existence of God is not the question, but rather it concerns the manner of living that is demanded by the requirement that it not matter if a God exists or not. That is (for the sake of communicating with my secular friend) if a God exists, how we live would be acceptable to that God, and if not, that also would be acceptable to everyone else. Or, another way to phrase it, is there any way of living that meets this requirement and would this in fact be compatible with how the bible says we should live? Does the biblical approach to life meet this requirement? I hope this clarifies my question. |

218 | What does this verse mean? | Ps 37:1 | Parable | 44684
Sometimes it helps to consult another translation and to look at the context of a verse (NIV) Psalm 37:1-4 1 Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; 2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. 3 Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. 4 Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. To me, this means, don't get upset over the actions of wicked people for their fate is certain. Instead, devote yourself to the Lord; you will be safe from the wicked, so there is no need to worry about what they do. |
||||||
219 | What does this verse mean? | Ps 37:1 | Parable | 44685
Also, it means don't envy the wordly gains of the wicked, for they will lose those things when they die and if you delight in the Lord, he will provide all you could ever imagine and more!
220 | The Bible and Science, #3 | Ps 102:26 | Parable | 51765
One way to exress the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics is: "The entropy of an isolated system increases during any natural process." Entropy is understood in two ways: 1. In terms of energy, it is the amount of energy used to move energy from one place to another, i.e. the cost of doing business when moving energy around, like the fee you pay to a stockbroker to buy/sell stocks for you. 2. In terms of the randomness of a system, the natural progression is to go from order to chaos, i.e. from low entropy to high entropy. I think both meanings witness to spiritual issues. Clearly, by His death on the cross, Jesus paid for our sins, i.e. He paid the fee for us to move from spiritual death to eternal life. As for the other meaning, that all things decay, consider Psalm 102:25 In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26a They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. and Romans 8:20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.
