206 | Did God reverse the polyglot curse?? | Acts 2:1 | Hank | 84254
Mathew, in your answer to Portland's question concerning God's confounding of language during the time of the tower of Babel, you state that "this curse was reversed when God gave us the ability to speak languages and communicate in Acts 2." If this is true, why then am I, an English-speaking man, unable to understand a Japanese-speaking man nor he me, unless I study Japanese or he English? Isn't your statement rather sweeping? Isn't it inaccurate to hypothesize a general principle that God reversed the polyglot curse on the basis of the isolated event that occured on Pentecost in Acts 2? Is it not true that the empirical consequences of God's action on Pentecost do not support the hypothesis that He effected a general reversal of His action at Babel? --Hank
207 | Baptism, Trinity, and Teachers? | Acts 2:38 | Hank | 4694
Nehemiah, I respect your privilege to air your views and ask that you respect mine. I have no reason to question your faith or your sincerity and do not do so. I come to inquire but not to attack; to challenge, not to condemn. There are three categories addressed in your posting about which I have grave concern and on which I would like to comment and pose additional questions to you.(1) Quoting you: "While Jesus was baptising, he baptised in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost." Wherein does any scripture support the tenet that Jesus ever baptised anyone? If believers today are to be baptised in the name of Jesus only, as you state, what are we to do with Jesus' command in Matthew 28:19 to baptise in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? (2) Quoting you: "The Trinity is symbolic of one Spirit." Where does the Bible lend credence to this statement? And what exactly do you mean by it? Can you expand and add clarity to it, in accordance with clear Biblical teaching?(3) Quoting you: "The answer is not in man. We all [are in] error. The truth is in the Word." With the statement as it stands, by itself, one could hardly find fault. But you used it in this context. You said, "My advice to the gentleman who responded to my queston is that you put your trust in no man and don't let another interpret for you." With that I have questions and concerns. What was Phillip doing for the Ethiopian in the Book of Acts regarding the meaning of the passage in Isaiah? Why did Paul tell Timothy to preach the word? Why did Jesus say in Matthew 28:19 to go into all the world and preach the Gospel? Would it not be better simply to send copies of the Bible and let the recipients figure it out for themselves? One closing thought: There is a verse of Scripture, 2 Timothy 3:16, that speaks to us all, and no Christian can do himself harm by committing it to memory and stamping it indelibly upon his heart: "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness." Every good wish in Jesus' name. --Hank

214 | Scripture is clear, right? | Acts 11:1 | Hank | 6912
Dear Hiram Abiff, your name sounds as though you are from the East, or have been to the East! Your post is as a note, but it contains a question, to wit: "The Scripure is clear if we are open, right." Well, there are parts of Scripture that are indeed clear, even to a simple person like me. And there are other parts of Scripture that are not clear, not to anyone this side of heaven. But the Scripture is crystal clear on who Christ is and what one must do to be saved......I'm quite unacquainted with the beliefs and practices of certain faiths, including the procedure you outline in your note of being "pulled on, rocked, and yelled at" in order to bring someone to Christ. I have never read any Scripture that would even remotely appear to support such a practice as you describe. Do you happen to know how these people justify their ritual, or whatever it is? By the way, Hiram, welcome to the Study Bible Forum. --Hank

218 | Bible Versions Galore: Good or Bad? | Acts 26:24 | Hank | 68931
To all you guys on the "Do you own a TNIV?" thread (and anyone else who may wish to weigh in): It might be useful to kick around some or all of the ideas suggested by the following questions: Do you find it soothing or confusing to have so many translations floating around? Do you think the gender-neutral versions good or bad, true to the text or pushing it too far? What do you consider the real motivation behind Bible publishers who come out with a new translation about as often as car makers come out with new models? Is there are real need for all these translations? Is a literal translation better or worse than a paraphrase, and why? Do so many versions tend to create a modern-day Tower of Babel atmosphere in churches and Bible study groups? Do you feel there is any likelihood of any one version rising above the commond herd to gain a lofty status anywhere near what the KJV has enjoyed for nearly four centuries? Do you think it's wise to stick to one version or play the field? Do you find study Bibles useful, or do you prefer to do your own digging? If you had to surrender all versions but one, which would you keep, and why? Have fun. Perhaps we all of us will learn something that will help us in our quest to learn more about God's word. --Hank
