1761 | Is Limited Atonement Bibical? | NT general Archive 1 | John Reformed | 34448
Thanks Brother Tim, Your point concerning Matt 28:26 is well taken. This is what I especially enjoy about this forum that Our Gracious Lord has provided. It drives one into the scriptures to search out the essence of His truth. Tim, I am discovering that the closer I come to His truth the more I love both God and man. Perhaps our ongoing discussion will result in a love feast. May God grant it Let us reason together, that is Tim, John, all others who wish to and God Almighty our source of all things. As you can tell from my postings, I am neither a teacher nor a scholar. Nevertheless here I am and these are my thoughts concerning the topic of Limited Atonement that Brother Zacht put forth and asked us to comment upon. Before we go any further I believe for the sake of clarity that we define our terms. There has existed quite a bit of confusion over the precise understanding of what Limited Atonement means. I feel it is absolutely necessary for us to first agree upon it's definition. I humbly submit that we use Easton's Bible Dictionary definition. you can find it online at www.bible.gateway.com EAB:The meaning of the word (atonement) is simply at-one-ment,i.e., the state of being at one or being reconciled, so that atonement is reconcilliation. Thus it is used to denote the effect that flows from the death of Christ. By Limited, my understanding is (my Reformed brethren's input is welcomed here) that it refers to those who by faith have believed in Christ. Good Night to all. John(Reformed)Adams |

Dear Brother Tim, It is indeed a joy to be able to discuss the great doctrines of the faith with bretheren all over this nation(and the world,as far as I know. I must make my initial posting brief for other duties are calling me away. God willing we will all benefit as we attempt to determine the deep truths of His Word. In regard to your last remark "I can't think of a single verse etc", You may have overlooked Matt 26:28. God Bless us all, John Adams |

1763 | Having problems with my faith. | Genesis | John Reformed | 34375
Dear Chyna, I certainly can empathise with your feeling about animals. I love animals and I'm sure most Christians do as well. After all The God we love made them. Animals' along with the rest of Gods creation, are a remarkable testimony to their Creator's marvelous power, wisdom and kindness. I believe God made them as part of the blessing He gave Adam and Eve. Animals were meant to bring joy to our first parents. Tragically Adam and Eve sinned against God and, not only Adam and Eve but the entire Creation fell under the curse of sin. We cannot blame God for the consequences of a crime man committed. The bible says that the whole of creation is groaning under the burden of that single act of rebellion. Not all things in the Bible are equally easy to understand or accept. Over my years as a Christian there have been many things that disturbed and puzzled me concerning the way in which God rules His Creation. Many of those thorny questions have been answered, Praise God, but not all. Without faith it is impossible to please God. I wonder if I had perfect understanding of all of God's works, what would I need Faith for? Many times in stuggling with difficult teaching in scripture, I find myself in the roll of a prosecuter questioning God on why He did this and why He did that. Sometimes it seems to me that God just is'nt fair! Chyna, you and I are not alone in this. All of us question God's actions from time to time. The problem is that at times like that we are guilty of putting God in the dock and accusing Him of wickedness. We forget that everything God does is perfect and pure and holy and righteous, it is us who are imperfect and impure and wicked. When God restores me to my senses I remember that he said "Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and do not lean on your own understanding". We must pray and be good students of His word and also do as you have don e, bravely confessing to your brothers and sisters in Christ your doubts and fears. If my answer to your question has helped you to resolve any of these difficulties, let me know and we will praise Him together. God bless you Chyna with grace and peace |

Dear Charis, Thank you for your response. Regarding your first question pertaining to respect for the faith and actions of other Christians, I will try to be as honest as I am able. It is my desire to act in love regarding the bretheren. Even when I am in strong disagreement with their doctrine or their particular method of worship. However, we fail to practice love when we place unity higher than truth. I can't bring myself to respect those things that are not in accordance with God's Word. Having said that; I do not feel it necessary to divide over non-essential issues or views. Even in my own denomination (Presbyterian P.C.A.) there are differences regarding eschatology, music used in worship, Creation (7 litreral days vs. 7 ages)etc. But concerning essential doctrine such as Justification, The Trinity, the inerrancy of scripture...there is no room for compromise. Christian liberty is one thing and heresy is another! It is the responsibility for each one of us to judge church doctine and worship practices in the light of scripture. I say this because I have been under the instruction of poor(sometimes to the point of false) teaching in the past and have learned thru my experience just how valuable the truth of God is. God makes all things work together for good to those who love Him and are called accoding to His purpose. There is more I would say, but I need to sign off. Please write me again, I don't always know if I've addressed a question correctly or have reponded appropriately. I'm a newbie on the Forum. God Bless Charis. John |

1765 | From whom does faith originate? | Eph 2:8 | John Reformed | 34105
Dear Bro. Tim The crux of my question is: From whom does faith orignate? Can an unregenerate man (one who is dead in trespasses and sin) find within himself the capacity for faith?, or must it necessarily come from an outside source I believe that we are saved by grace thru faith and even my capacity to believe in Christ was a gift from God. Perhaps I misunderstood your analogy, it seemed to me that God did His part by providing His Son (the bridge) but then we had to do are part by contributing our faith (getting up and crossing the bridge). It is my contention, based on my understanding of Scripture, that formerly I was dead in trespasses and sin; my foolish mind was darkened; etc.(Ro:1). I was without God and was actively in rebellion against Him. Then I was presented with the Gospel and I believed. It must have been the Holy Spirit that gave me a new heart that made faith possible to begin with. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Your Bro. in Christ, John |

1767 | Salvation: "By" Grace, "Through" Faith. | Eph 2:8 | John Reformed | 34083
Dear Bro. Tim I appreciate your beautiful analogy of Christ being the bridge between God and man. However my understanding of the scriptures would have Christ picking me up and Himself carrying me across. I believe the the Scriptures teach that even faith is God,s gift to His people (Eph 4:6-7). 1768 | How can I do this? | Prov 13:22 | John Reformed | 31995
The greatest inheritance I can leave my children and grandchildren is the knowledge of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If they have Christ they are in possesion of the most precious treasure anyone could dream of.(Matthew Chapter 13) Jesus said " Do not store up for yourself treasures on earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt" but "store up for yourselves treasures in heaven"(Matthew Chapter 6). May God grant you grace and peace. |

1770 | Confusion concerning Jesus's death | Lev 17:11 | John Reformed | 31810
God is just, therefore He cannot wink at sin. We are sinners and deserve everlasting punishment. But, thankfully God is also mercifull and had a plan by which sinners might be saved. The good news is that if we believe in Jesus Christ we will be saved(see John 3:16). Jesus is fully God. He also is fully man. As a man He did something that no man has ever done, and that is He led a sinless life. God required a perfect sacrifice to pay for our sins. That is why Jesus had to die for our sins. The Bible says that Jesus became sin on the cross and that God poured out all his wrath on Him. But Jesus was not a sinner so that is why He is not spending eternity in Hell. We must never underestimate the the great price Christ paid for our salvation. The truth is that we cannot begin to understand the agony our beloved Saviour endured in our place. I hope this has helped some. |

1771 | God Intentionaly Made Bible Difficult? | Bible general Archive 1 | John Reformed | 31676
The difficulties I experience in understanding the scriptures arise from at least two weaknesses of mine. First:I am a sinner. This means that from time to time what the bible says is not what I want to hear and so instead of accepting the plain sense of the text, I twist it to suit myself. I must remember to pray and ask God to enlighten my mind thru the ministry of The Holy Spirit. Second: I'm not that knowledgeable about the culture and history that existed at the times the books of the bible were written. I therefore rely heavily on commentaries and study Bibles that help to fill in the blanks in my education. However I must bear in mind that the opinion of a commentator is not scripture itself. It's my resposibility to be a good Berean and prove what is said by the word of God. That being said there are many good resouces on the net. I like Matthew Henry an John Calvins commentaries. Knowing Scripture by R.C. Sproul is also a very good and inexpensive book. May the Lord bless you in your pursuit of Christ thru His word. |

1772 | Is it a sin to routine drink alcohol | 1 Corinthians | John Reformed | 31663
The Bible does not prohibit drinking alcohol, however it strongly condemns drunkeness.I suggest you read 1 Corinthians Chapt. 8 and Romans Chapt. 14.
1773 | Is there more to salvation than this | Romans | John Reformed | 31652
I believe that the Bible teaches that we are saved by grace alone thru faith alone in Christ alone (see Ephesians 2: 8-9). A holy lifestyle is created in us over the course of our lives by The Holy Spirit. However as long as we remain in this world we will continue to fall short and need to repent and confess our sins in prayer (1 John 1: 8-9) |
