162 | Best Bible to get | Bible general Archive 2 | Makarios | 108749
Greetings Kmbrlykay84, There are many quality choices that you could make in a Bible Translation. But I offer the following guidance rather than a simple answer. First, study a Bible in your own dialect, because the whole point of the Bible is communication. Second, use one of the standard (less idiomatic or non-paraphrasing) versions as a basis for careful, detailed study. For modern translations that are very accurate and very readable, I would recommend the English Standard Version (ESV), the New King James Version (NKJV), the New American Standard Bible (NASB), the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) and the New International Version (NIV). The NASB and NKJV place accuracy a bit above readability, the ESV is the most balanced (in my opinion), and the NIV and HCSB are much more accurate than today's paraphrasing versions while being very easy to read. Which ones do I use? I use the NASB and the ESV every day. I use the NKJV and KJV every week at least. I use the NIV and HCSB every once in awhile. Blessings to you, Makarios |

Greetings Ray, Good Scripture references, my friend! Some other verses worth looking into are: Matthew 28:18 "And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth." Daniel 7:13-14 ΒΆ "I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed." [NASB] Matthew 11:27 "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him." Matthew 26:64 "Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN." Romans 14:9 "For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living." Ephesians 1:20-22 "which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church," Philippians 2:9-11 "For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Colossians 2:10 "and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;" 1 Peter 3:22 "who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him." Good thoughts! Blessings to you, Makarios |

166 | What is marriage? | Bible general Archive 2 | Makarios | 109774
Greetings Earnest, I really don't think that Caesar has anything at all to do with anyone's marriage, except perhaps his own. God chose the Garden of Eden to institute marriage, and His Word abounds with both promises and warnings to safeguard the family. A marriage established and guided by Biblical standards has the potential of such blessedness that it can be compared to Christ's relationship with His beloved church (Ephesians 5:22-33). At the same time, violation of Scriptural standards brings painful and guilt-producing consequences. To be sure, the institution of marriage is old, but that does not mean that it is obsolete. Marriage was thousands of years old at Christ's first coming, but He still taught its appropriateness. "But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and the two shall become one flesh ... What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate" (Mark 10:6-9). The Christian realizes he is not at liberty to tamper with God's Word to conform it to passing fads in social theories. Cultural norms must be judged by Scripture; the Scripture is not judged by cultural norm. Neither should marriage be abandoned merely because increasing numbers are becoming disenchanted with it. The Christian never determines truth by majority vote, but by examining God's Word. In fact, the Bible prophesies that marriage will be degraded prior to Christ's return. "And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days of the Son of Man" (Luke 17:26). An examination of Noah's time reveals a widespread flippant attitude toward marriage, resulting in God's judgment (Luke 17:27; Genesis 6:2-4). The fact that a practice is widespread, or even average, does not constitute it as either advisable or right. The Old Testament prescribes severe punishment for those who disdainfully regard marriage's privileges and responsibilities. One of the Ten Commandments states, "You shall not commit adultery" (Exodus 20:14), and the law required that those convicted of adultery receive the death penalty (Leviticus 20:10). The New Testament does not require capital punishment for adultery, but assures that "God will judge" those who are not married who indulge in that sexuality which God has reserved for marriage (Hebrews 13:4). Sexual impropriety resulted in expulsion from the church (1 Cor. 5:1-2), and Paul warned of those who, with empty words, led others into immorality (Eph. 5:5-6). Eternal judgment awaits those who practice immorality and fail to repent (Rev. 21:8; 22:14-15). Marriage will not be obsolete until the trusting saint is with the Lord, "for in the resurrection, they neither marry nor are given in marriage" (Matthew 22:30). Those guilty of neglecting or violating the marriage covenant should repent and trust in Christ for forgiveness, knowing that "if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Blessings to you, Makarios |

170 | International Standard Version? | Bible general Archive 2 | Makarios | 110671
Greetings Mitelt! I like the International Standard Version! It is a more 'dynamic equivalent' translation that remains faithful to the original Greek. What I've seen of it, I really like! For more information, it's website is: http://www.isv.org/ Blessings to you, Makarios |

171 | the way to Heaven through habitual sin? | Bible general Archive 2 | Makarios | 110673
Greetings New Creature, I'm sure that you already know how I'm going to respond to this. :-) Every time a new member poses the question of eternal security, you are quick to post a reference to post # 95250, and I a reference to post # 95230.. :-) But to get back to your conversation.. I would say that the Word of God clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an excuse for sinful living and carnality (Romans 6:15-22; 13:13,14; Gal. 5:13,16,17,25,26; Titus 2:11-14). If your friend did not stress this point, then I disagree with his stance, since we are admonished over and over in the New Testament not to continue in our lives of sin. Blessings to you, Makarios |

172 | International Standard Version? | Bible general Archive 2 | Makarios | 110685
Greetings Mitelt, The ISV is a translation that seeks "precision" above anything else.. Case in point #1.. Luke 11:9 "So I say to you: Keep asking, and it will be given you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened for you." [ISV] The ISV, like the Holman Christian Standard Bible (which claims a translation philosophy of "optimal equivalence"), translates Luke 11:9 as "keep asking", "keep searching", and "keep knocking"... John 3:16 "For this is how God loved the world: He gave his unique Son so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life." [ISV] We can plainly see in these two passages (Luke 11:9 and John 3:16) that the ISV is pretty close to the HCSB and NIV when it comes to Bible translation, making it a more "dynamically equivalent" translation. Even so, the ISV is more literal than the NIV (see and compare Romans 1:17, 1 Cor. 13:10), even though it is still clearly a 'dynamic equivalent' translation (for instance, see 1 Cor. 13:7). Which is more literal, dynamic, or 'better': the NIV, ISV or NLT?? I believe that that question is a matter of personal preference. I would say that I prefer the ISV to the NLT, and could find myself using the ISV side by side with the NIV or the HCSB.. I would most likely use the ISV as more of a tool than as my 'most used' translation, but that is just my personal preference. Blessings to you, Makarios |

174 | translate OT "with respect to the NT" | Bible general Archive 2 | Makarios | 112190
Greetings Dalcent, The Revised Standard Version (RSV) was written with a philosophy of translation in that it does not 'attempt' to read New Testament theology back into Old Testament Scripture, but rather will let the OT say exactly what it says and leave the interpretation to others. Therefore, you get "young woman" in Isaiah 7:14 in the RSV. It was their belief (though not always consistently followed) that translators did not have the right to read their theology (however correct) into a passage, but rather must let it stand exactly as written. Dr. Jack P. Lewis wrote, "The RSV scholars decided not to read Christian theology into their translation of the OT passages that have been traditionally interpreted messianically, and they have been taken to task for it." I, for one, like "virgin" in Isaiah 7:14. However, we still know that Jesus was born of virgin birth without reading Isaiah 7:14, since Matthew 1:20-25 and Luke 1:26-35 both affirm the virgin birth of Christ. Isaiah 7:14 is, in itself, an important Messianic verse that is "proven" to be a prophecy of Christ by the Holy Spirit Himself, as penned by Matthew in Matthew 1:23. But this is just a "glimpse" of what is meant by translating the OT with respect to what is revealed in the New Testament. Scripture is seen as being a "whole" rather than two separate Testaments, having no relation to each other, when the opposite is more correct. Elsewise, we could not confidently say within our hearts that the Bible does not contradict itself. The NRSV continued the legacy of the RSV by not reading NT theology back into the OT. However, the English Standard Version, itself being a descendant of the RSV, DOES read and interpret Scripture as a whole, being a departure from this ideology as introduced in the RSV, interpreting the OT in light of what is revealed in the NT. I highly recommend the ESV!! Blessings to you, Makarios |

178 | Reading Harry Potter | Bible general Archive 2 | Makarios | 129765
Greetings LIVERIGHT, A while back, a lady named Lizzie wrote a question regarding the Harry Potter books, and I and several others wrote responses back based on what we believed at the time. When I wrote, I had never personally read any of J. K. Rowlings' books, but I simply said: read Harry Potter, and then read Philippians 4:8 to see if the Harry Potter books meet "the test." Now we fast forward to today: I have since read all 5 of the Harry Potter books, and I must say that I find them quite enjoyable! I am a firm believer that they do pass the Philippians 4:8 test. I do not believe that they support or proliferate the occult as others at this StudyBibleForum might. J. K. Rowling herself stated that she was not a practicing witch, and, sparing judgment upon someone of whom I have never had the pleasure of meeting, I believe her word as truth. In the fantasy/science fiction genre of fiction literature, there are too many potential targets out there (indeed any writer) that we Christians could take aim at. In no way do I believe that the Harry Potter series is making (or was intended to make) any religious point at all. Therefore, if you have a problem with it, then you should avoid it. But that does not necessarily mean that all Christians will have a problem with or should avoid the Harry Potter books. It is only wrong to read Harry Potter if it becomes a "stumbling block" for you. Otherwise, I hope that you not only enjoy the first 5 books of this series, but the last two as well (as I will). Blessings to you, Makarios |

179 | Why is NAS better than KJV | Bible general Archive 2 | Makarios | 141601
Greetings Handidave, There is a lot of information that will help you to understand why there are different words in the various different translations of the Bible that exist today. The age of the translation is one factor; another factor is which group of ancient manuscripts that are emphasized in translation; another factor is the translation approach that a certain translation committee undertook when they developed their translation, etc, etc.. To help you better understand, here is a listing of websites that you may find as very helpful: http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/txt/bib/BibStudy/05Versions.html http://faith.propadeutic.com/questions.html http://www.geocities.com/bible_translation/compare.htm Or, you can use the Search function at the right as this question has been brought up before. Greetings again, Handidave, I apologize for the second post; but if you had questions about the Greek and Hebrew behind certain passages and why certain passages read differently, there is hardly any better source than that of the NET Bible (http://www.bible.org/netbible/index.htm).. I pray that you also find this website as a great wealth of information as I have. But I was not the first one at this forum to find that valuable website; that honor goes to Kalos. Blessings to you, Makarios |
