141 | How do you evangelize someone who | Bible general Archive 2 | John Reformed | 100436
Dear Ed, I appreciate your reply. If I strike you as unemotional, it is because I have been praying for God's gift of self-control. It is not easy for me to read some of the things that have been said about what I believe and in the past I have re-acted emotionally. The forum has been a wonderfull experience for me. I have had a chance to share my view of Scripture with christians from a wide range of traditions. In truth, I have learned a great deal from many who hold different views as well. I have also learned a few things about myself. One of those things was that I have in the past been far more interested in what my response would be, rather than the content of the question or note I was responding to. It was my own frustration with posts from others who did not bother to REALLY read what I had written that opened my own eyes!..."Take the log out of your own eye..." came to mind. The fact is that I am a very emotional guy. I cry when we sing "Rock of Ages" at church! I identify so much with the words of the old hymn: Not the labor of my hands Can fulfill Thy law’s demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to the cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die. Thanks Again, John |

143 | Is the sin nature substance or mind set? | Phil 3:9 | John Reformed | 100425
Dear Pam, The sin nature is the inclination of man's heart toward that which is wicked. Before we were born again, we were slaves to sin and were captive to the devil to do his will (2 Tim 2:26). Christ has rescued us and freed us from our captivity. He has placed within us a new heart that is inclined toward good. Yet we still struggle against what is left (the remnants) of our old man's nature. Nevertheless we are to consider our old nature as dead and crucifed! The Bible does use the word "flesh" when speaking of our natural tendency to sin, but, please don't make the mistake of thinking that it means the body is evil in itself. God Himself created our fleshly bodies and said they were good. Am I on the right track? John |

Hi Steve, I'm more than a little perplexed myself. At this point I'm not certain that the reformed perspective on any doctrine won't prompt our critics to cry "Abuse!". Rom 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. I'm standing on His promise and my confidence is in Him. I do thank you Steve for your observation. God Bless, John |

Ken, I have recieved a personal warning from The Lockman foundation cautioning against engaging in debates over theological perspectives. Therefore, for me to respond by defending Calvin would place my status on this forum in jeopardy. My advice is to stick to Bible Study and shun political and religious propaganda. I would not want you to lose your posting priveleges. John John |

Dear Ed, It seems as if Figgy dis-agrees with your characterization of me. Of course her perspective may be prejudiced by her love for her cold, old father. :-) John |

151 | How do you "share the Gospel?" | Matt 28:18 | John Reformed | 100337
Dear Ken, You wrote: "But if you desire of Him and become what He desires, what is our responsibility? At the present time we have two different perspectives on how God sanctfies His saints. You seem to be focused on our responsibility and I'm focused on God's soveriegnty in the process of sanctification. It is a complex and mysterious relationship. In a way, we are both right! We are commanded to do certain things and to hold certain attitudes and it is our responsibility to strive to be obedient and to be faithful reflections of our Lord. At the same time we must not overlook or ignore the teaching that it is not ourselves who do good works, but it is the Spirit of Christ in us. Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. The way I see it is that we are to act AS IF it all depends on us, but not forget, that it all depends on Him. Remember...even our initial desire for Christ did not come from our us but from above! John 3:27 John answered and said, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven. "If we don't know how to accomplish the task what should we recognize about ourselves that needs to be rectified?" For that we need revelation from the Holy Spirit. God Bless, John |

153 | How do you "share the Gospel?" | Matt 28:18 | John Reformed | 100310
Well Ken...Since we rely and trust Christ to save us and keep us; we also rely on the Holy Spirit help and enlighten us; and the Father that He provide for us and forgive us...I don't see anything wrong with either position. So long as our dependence is upon the Father, Son and Holy Ghost we can't help but be safe. God Bless, John |

154 | How do you "share the Gospel?" | Matt 28:18 | John Reformed | 100302
"God will not give me humility or patience or holiness or love as separate gifts of His grace." (Watchman Nee) But the Apostle Paul said: Rom 12:6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; What am I missing here? John |

155 | How do you "share the Gospel?" | Matt 28:18 | John Reformed | 100289
The Bible contains many commands; exhortations and examples of personal holiness. However, God has ordained grace as the means by which we are made able to do what is pleasing in His sight. We may have the will to do what God has commanded, but for power to obey we must seek God's grace. Not one of saints will have reason to boast in His presence. Humbly we will fall on our faces and cast our crowns at His feet. John |

156 | How do you "share the Gospel?" | Matt 28:18 | John Reformed | 100282
Dear mmomapbs, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; I am all for personal sharing of the gospel, but the great commission (matt 28:19,20) was given to the the church leaders who were the eleven disciples (Matt 28:16). I am not taking this passage so literally as to think it applied to them alone! What I do believe is that, the principle which we may safely take from Jesus' command, is that the church elders are the ones whose task it is to lead the rest of us into spreading the "Good News". It is important and neccessary that the saints be equipped prior to going into the world. We would'nt send out babes among the wolves, would we? Sometimes I think we (especially American christians) are too individualistic. The old "Lone Ranger" mind set. John |

157 | How do you evangelize someone who | Bible general Archive 2 | John Reformed | 100277
Dear Ed, John 3:27 John answered and said, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven. Perhaps you have been blessed with far greater spiritual experiences than have I. If so, thank God for His providence. Being loathe to engage in a defense of what level of zeal for lost souls I may or may not have, let me simply say that my only hope is Christ. Other than my boast in Him, I have nothing to brag about. I trust that is your attitude also. God Bless, John |

Dear Rev Red, Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, There is also the evidence in our love for the brethren; the manifestation of good works in our lives; progressive holiness; hatred of sin and longing for heaven. Their are many true believers who do not speak in tongues and do not hold that it is an evidence of the filling of the Holy Spirit. John Reformed |
