123 | will they go to hell? | Acts 4:12 | hobbs | 171367
Dear Max, one often hears the question, 'WHAT HAPPENS TO THE INNOCENT SAVAGE WHO HAS NEVER HEARD THE GOSPEL? The fact is that is no such thing as an "innocent" savage. Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. and Rom 3:9-18 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written, "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE." "THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING," "THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS"; "WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS"; "THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN." "THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES." John 6:43,44 Jesus answered and said to them, "Do not grumble among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day." John |

124 | how do you receive the full blessing | Col 2:2 | hobbs | 171357
Greetings VMcGlocking, If a person is in Christ, that person is wealthier than Soloman ever dreamed of being. We have recieved eternal life and are co-heirs with Christ. Even our trials are more precious than gold! Time prevents me from even beginning to describe how blessed we are. Col 2:2 that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God's mystery, that is, Christ Himself. As for the wealth that the world seeks; it is dust and a mere illusions. Welcome to the Forum my friend, John |

125 | Loving God with all your heart | Gen 1:1 | hobbs | 171350
Hi Doc, I was curious about Newton's use of "Blasted my gourds". After a bit of research, I landed on John Gill"s commentary on Jonah 4. I think you would enjoy it. Thanks Doc, John |

126 | Loving God with all your heart | Gen 1:1 | hobbs | 171347
Welcome to the club Nightjay! Not a single one of us can, in all honesty, say that we love God with all our heart. To love Him with all your heart would mean that sin was a thing of the past; that falling to temptation was never a problem. John Newton, who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace", also wrote... I asked the Lord, that I might grow In faith, and love, and every grace; Might more of His salvation know, And seek more earnestly His face. I hoped that in some favoured hour At once He'd answer my request, And by His love's constraining power Subdue my sins, and give me rest. Instead of this, he made me feel The hidden evils of my heart; And let the angry powers of hell Assault my soul in every part. Yea more, with his own hand He seemed Intent to aggravate my woe; Crossed all the fair designs I schemed, Blasted my gourds, and laid me low. 'Lord, why is this?' I trembling cried, 'Wilt thou pursue Thy worm to death?' 'Tis in this way,' the Lord replied, 'I answer prayer for grace and faith. 'These inward trials I employ 'From self and pride to set thee free; 'And break thy schemes of earthly joy, 'That thou may'st seek thy all in me.' |

127 | Must Christians follow OT Law? | James 2:10 | hobbs | 171331
Hi Jeff, I base my statement ("What Christians are free from is not the Law itself, but free from the penalty of failing to keep the Law.) on the following verses. Romans 7:6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter. Whether we translate the verb as “released” or (as you suggested) delivered, it does not change the fact that we must serve the Law in the Spirit. Rom 7:25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. The Law referred to is the Ten Commandments. I believe that the fact that they were written in stone by God Almighty himself has particular significance! (See Doctrinsograce recent post...point 6 is an excellent summary of my own thinking... ID# 171295 John |

128 | Must Christians follow OT Law? | James 2:10 | hobbs | 171281
Hi Rich, You've most likely have gotten an answer already. Nevertheless, I would be pleased to provide my point of view. What Christians are free from is not the Law itself, but free from the penalty of failing to keep the Law. Read Romans 7. John |

129 | Salvation not through faith alone? | Romans | hobbs | 171232
RS, No. What I mean to say is that the Bible says that regeneration by the Holy Spirit preceeds faith. The "natural man" considers spiritual truth as foolishness and that he is totally incapable of understanding because he is spiritually dead. Saving faith is a spiritual gift, without which no man may be saved. Eph 2:5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 2 Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; James 1:17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. Grace that did not include the gift of faith, would be useless to the spiritually dead. John |

130 | What do you mean by predestined? | Romans | hobbs | 171228
Dear RS, I agree that God knows all things. I also know that He placed a curse on Adam and upon Adam's decendents. The direct result of God's curse was physical and spiritual death. 1 Cor 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised The condition of "natural man" describes our condition prior to our spiritual re-birth. Not only did we not believe, Paul said we could not believe! How can a man believe what he considers to be foolishness? Jesus told Nicodemus that unless a man be born again, that no man could see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3) Therefore, when we present the gospel to the lost we rely not on our skill or our ability to persuade, or even on the listener's attitude, but on the Holy Spirit's power to bring life to the dead. 131 | Is baptism needed for salvation? (One.) | 1 Pet 3:21 | hobbs | 170975
Dear LuvHisWurd, It also does not require a doctorate to know that building a doctrine based upon a single verse is a great mistake. Can you support your statement from other books or other authors of the Bible? John |

132 | Subordinate? | 2 Thess 2:15 | hobbs | 170964
Dear Robin So ..on the one hand Chrysostom denys sola Scriptura, while on the other he affirms it. "Chrysostom clearly believes in a divine oral tradition that teaches some things, not contained in scripture." and... "Regarding the things I say, I should supply even the proofs, so I will not seem to rely on my own opinions, but rather, prove them with Scripture, so that the matter will remain certain and steadfast." Is it any wonder that not one member of the Forum has yet to accept your argument? Luther was well aware of the divisions that would arise as a result of releasing the Bible in the language of the people. Nevertheless, he believed that keeping them in bondage to a corrupt teaching magesterium as far worse. In the end, it is not the actions of men, which will determine the outcome of history. It will be God’s Sovereign Will. Rom 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Hobbs |

135 | the Bible Alone | 2 Thess 2:15 | hobbs | 170928
Robin Hass, Having visited the Via Media web site, I now no why your attack against the doctrine of sola scriptura is so relentless! As long as Protestants hold fast to the doctrine of sola scriptura, the agenda of liberal churches will never win over the hearts and minds of the majority who consider themselves "bible believing" Christians. 137 | the Bible Alone | 2 Thess 2:15 | hobbs | 170868
Modern-day converts to Rome, especially those who fall into the EWTN/Scott Hahn/”The Journey Home” style of conversion experience, are zealous for their newfound cause. And they are armed with a legion of heart-tugging audio and video tapes, along with full color magazines and friendly sounding books to add to the force of the appeal. There seems to be something about getting others to “come along” that helps them to be comforted in their own decision to embrace Rome’s authority claims. And the questions that come out over coffee eventually get quite pointed. “So have you ever really thought about why you believe the Bible alone is enough?” Then comes the personal story, “See, I was just like you, and had heard that all my life, but I had just accepted it. But then I started to read the early church fathers, and found out that sola scriptura is really just a human tradition, and we really need an infallible church to guide us into the fullness of the truth, and that the one true church has been around for two thousand years!” You may read James White's entire article at http://www.aomin.org/SS.html |

139 | Coffee and Cigarettes a sin ? | 1 Cor 3:17 | hobbs | 170863
Welcome Ecamil! Thank you for sharing your view. My question is how did you arrive at your conclusion? I did note that you included 1 cor 6:19 as part of your foundation, but it is unclear to me how it supports your belief that Paul is including physical health as well as spiritual health. In fact v.13 of chat 6, seems dismissive of physical health. (I'm not saying that God cares nothing for our health, rather, I am saying that the concern here is spiritual morality). Afterall, the immorality which Paul points out to the church at Corinth are moral failures. Our topic concerns smoking and beverages containing caffiene. To my mind, the use of these are disputable John |

140 | Coffee and Cigarettes a sin ? | 1 Cor 3:17 | hobbs | 170856
My understanding of cor 3:17 leads me to believe that this verse has nothing to do with smoking; coffee; glutoney; or any personal habit, pleasure or weakness. When taken in context (which we all should strive to remember to do) we realize that Paul is referring to the Church and not to the individual. John |
