101 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 28240
Emmaus, Thank you for your reply. If you look at my other posts in response to the other find bretheren in here. You will find that I too am in favor of the "more excellent way" in 1Cor12. That is exactly what I pray for over all the other gifts he desires to give us. I have been blessed with the other gifts that are not as "initial?" according to some views. It would seem this ISSUE is very discerning. Read all the posts attributed to this and find out how discerning. May the LORD continue to Bless you Emmaus, *SHALOM* |

102 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 28239
ethan, I havent read all of what you posted yet. I have only seen what you said about REASON...and you havent explained what you mean to me. maybe im just really dense. Reason defined is like what the Lord said Isaiah 1:18. "Come let US reason together.." Whatever we hear, read, or see...we need to reason it with HIM. Thru HIS scripture, and only HIS scripture. We cannot deduce from our own worldly views, we need to consider seeing things thru HIS eyes as best we can. We can find HIS eyes in HIS words. Your defining of reason is a good example...but is it the same one HE would have used? I leave with that in mind as i peruse the rest of your post. *shalom* |

103 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 28121
ethan, firstly, please explain what you mean by 4 things destroy faith: Fear, Doubt, Reason and Anxiety. You see I do believe 3 of those 4 are characterisitics that show a lack of faith. Reason isnt one of them. So, if you please. Explain how it does. 2ndly, If I may be so bold as to ask. Where did you reason your words about power, authority etc? I have to ask because it would seem you are using "dunamos" out of context with what you said about satan wanting our authority etc. But since you didnt give any scriptual reference I cant qualify a rebuttal of any consenquence. 3rdly, Do you understand the Corinthian letter from Paul was a total rebuke of what they were doing in the church there? Paul was letting them know that they were abusing the spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit for the "edification" of the church. Not to used for self edification. Several times Paul said let what ever they do be to edify the church. The times he said self was edified was in contrast to the church. In the context and tone of the letter he was letting them know that when they used the gifts for self they were out of order. With the tongues especially. We notice that, because he wrote about it and qualified its importance in 2 chapters. Namely 12 and 14, and in between he wanted us to know what was more important. Chapter 13 ... the LOVE chapter. You see, when it came to the church, JESUS was most adamant that we LOVE one another more than ourselves. That was HIS 2nd command. If we are using the gifts of the Spirit for our self acknowledgement or self gratification or as prooooof to ourselves and to others that we are OF HIM then we may be missing the whole point of the use of the gift. Namely, for the edification of the church. In cases like what Ashestobeauty wrote about how this gift has helped her life....PRAISE GOD ....you see she didnt use it covetously. Hence, the Holy Spirit gave her this gift for helps and mercy. Covetousness is the most lethal of all characteristics of PRIDE. WEll i think it is anyway. Desiring a gift like Paul says in this letter is different from coveting. Coveting is a form of self absorbtion. There is no ryhme or reason other than "me me me me" when it comes to coveting. Righeous Desire is given to someone by the Holy Spirit that helps to edify the church. Without the help of the Holy Spirit all we do is in our own authority. And right now backing what i just said Scriptually escapes me....forgive me. Let us not convolute HIS story..... *shalom* |

104 | Define "praying in the Holy Spirit" | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 28073
Robert, blessings to you.! I agree with most of what you are saying. No buts included....ehehehe I sure would enjoy hearing a concise explanation for verses 15, 16 in 1Cor 14 these seem to tell me that the LORD wants me to be able to reason with HIM even when praying. but then...i could be convoluting the story...which i dont want *SHALOM* |

108 | Define "praying in the Holy Spirit" | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27875
robert, you say in the end of your letter that you dont think the apostles were speaking in tongues..rather than people hearing their lingo. I dont know what you mean...especially when Peter stood up and quoted JOEL...the prophecy of tongues was included in that dissertation. Previous to that, you stated, the HS guiding our thoughts toward Christ at a much higher level?? I have to ask like ashestobeauty did....What is praying in the spirit? and now...understanding in the spirit? Now im starting to get confused. *SHALOM* |

110 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27873
EdB, IF I may? Thank you for your wonderful crispness and unselfish thoughts. Eloquence was used because your words were very well stated. It is nice to see a reasoned effort on your part to substantiate your love for the Lord in the way HE works. YOur love is not much different than mine, ashestobeauty, Hank, kalos, and the rest ive not mentioned. Your words sound alot like what Paul was saying "I would rather speak 5 words in my lingo than 5,000 in a tongue". It isnt surprising to me that TODAY is any different than Paul's day with the abuses we find. It shouldnt be, we were forwarned by Jesus and others. Godspeed to you .... **SHALOM** |

112 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27871
ashestobeauty, When I posted the question, I knew the responses I would get. There was intention to it, in the fact that I really want to know more about what alot of people call "the tongues issue". I have only gone to one church in my 10yrs as a Christian. And it happens to be AG. The first time I heard someone speak in a tongue I was totally freaked out. (which I find is common...both tongues and people freaking) An interpretation was then followed and a brief explanation by our pastor to what had transpired. Since then, many times I heard tongues ...no interpretation....words of knowledge with out tongues...and I can go on. But let me tell you, the first time was enough for me to seek counsel directly. And I did, first with questions to my wife who didnt know what to anwer other than look into HIS word. So I did, and 10yrs later...I dont think I have the total correct answer but I do believe I have a good grasp of what the tongues is for and how it should be utilized. We learn alot from 1Corinthians 12,13,14. And a few other books, but this letter by Paul was most influential in my conclusion. At this point I would hope you will allow me to address your post to Hank and Kalos. Please dont take this as a picking on you letter. I am not. I am only trying to help myself into a better understanding of this issue and hopefully to learn from it. I read literally everything I see and try to make a sense about it. So to your letter I saw some things I'd like to address and maybe learn from. In your first sentences you state that tongues is evedence that you are saved. You followed that quoting, "you shall know them by their fruit." I concur with the fruit as being a good helps in judging someones salvation. But I cannot say tongues is one of those fruit. The "fruit" that so often is quoted by US all I have found, is strictly the characteristics we are to have working through us, which is an extension of AGAPE love from the Lord. Gal 5:22,23 I would also like to know more about what you mean by: "It is one thing to have the Holy Sirit "dwelling in you" but you go to a whole other level when you allow Him to work in you, one of the ways to do this is through taking advantage of your gift of "speaking in tongues". You are giving Him Power to work in and through you." Your gift of tongues? Is it for everyone? IF so, and I do believe it is a gift from HIM ..just like all his other power gifts and less powerful gifts. Then why do I not flow in it? Could It be that I am trying to intelligize it or that I dont believe enough or that it isnt one of the gifts to work along the others HE has given me? You see, these questions have been usuals for me with this topic. I get told things like: I can enter a whole new/better/understandable level with God. Until, I start speaking/praying in tongues I dont know what I am missing out on. Your praying correctly to God for those things I dont know what to pray. I can add so many more to the list. I am not trying to say that your experience with this wonderful gift is wrong. I am not trying to dissuade your belief on this gift. All I want to say is....Godspeed to you m'lady. You have a wonderful understanding with HIM in this regard. As do I with the gift of prophecy and love and mercy, administration and teaching. Without those gifts from HIM I would not be who I am today in this world. Nor could I be discipled and be a discipler. Glory goes to HIM in the highest. ...Lord dont let me convolute the story... *SHALOM* |

113 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27870
KALOS, wheweeeeeeeeee.......what a grand observation..!! BRAVO! Your statement about experience and no experience being the view one has on doctrnine. When the Bible inteprets, defines, clarifies, shows itself to be dogmatic about a doctrine. IT ISNT OPEN TO our VIEW, or is it ? -our - is defined - children of God, not the non-believer. I dont think the LORD wants our opinion on HIS choice of standard. He just wants us to make a choice. Doctrinal issues should be only those that are essential to our salvation, any other things should should be given liberty. Agustine, says it best, "In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In All things, charity." Prov14:15, 15:28; 1Pet3:15; Ps119:46 Another favorite quote I enjoy.... If the literal sense makes common sense, seek no other sense or you get nonsense. Personally, I would only be dogmatic on doctrines that are eternal. Temporal doctrines will pass... ...Lord dont let me convolute your story... *SHALOM* |

114 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27692
Joe, Thank you my newfound brother. My question is a personal one, of course. But I did post the question for all others who feel the way I used to. I have been in constant contact with HIS word and I dont feel like I am losing anything by not having this gift. I have been granted other avenues to prosper His word. I dont find myself being insufficient other than not being able to understand how people come to the conclusions they come to. Reason is something the LORD wants us to come to. I too am in the same corner as yourself. Thanks for your lovely words. **SHALOM* |

115 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27690
Greetings to YOU ALL, Thank you for the wonderful words of encouragement and all the profound wisdom of Scripture. retxar, ashestobeauty,ReformerJoe,Hank, time does not permit me to jump into much dialogue at the moment. I will return in a couple of days and bring to you a more thoughtful account of all that has been said. I would like to add one thing though. All the tongues in the NT spoken ...are they not a known language? But not by the speaker? If so, then how is that a heavenly language? And a heavenly language, what is that exactly? Like Paul said in his epistle to Corinth, "thought I speak in tongues of men and of angels..". What kind of language do angels speak? The angels ive seen in Scripture spoke the language of the one they were addressing. So what am I looking for here? A prayer language to speak to God or a tongue know one knows what I am saying unless there is an interpretation? And if there is no interpreter I shouldnt be saying anything outloud. But for the sake of arguement, IF I WERE DUMB...I dont get the chance to speak to God correctly? Or be more blessed in my walk with God? You see, I've poured alot of years into wondering these things. And the best thing I can find right now is that Paul said, "I show you a more excellent way", 1Corinthians13 is the whole thing for me. Yet, If I am flowing in other gifts of the spirit for the edification of the church, am I still missing out in HIS blessings to me? Paul does tell me that all these things were specifically for that...edifying the church...not edifying SELF. But why do some feel I'm missing out if I dont speak/pray in tongues? I am still fulfilling the call on my life by HIM....but IM missing out on something??????? (seems I am overstating ...forgive me) ....Lord dont let me convolute the story.... *SHALOM* |

116 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27598
Anyone care to dialogue about known and unknown tongues? You see, I have a hard time receiving the "initail evidence" of being Baptised in the Spirit. I have prayed years for it. I have had many friends and family pray I get it. I've even had scores of children praying for me. I believe the Gifts of the Spirit are STILL in fine working order and Not a ONE has disappeard since the canon. I assume some of my frineds in here are going to address this quickly. I do hope to get some thought provoked in all of US....... ...Lord dont let me convolute the story... *SHALOM* |
