103 | Do demons exist today? | Bible general | EdB | 243798
Beja Okay a starting place. I think we all agree that Christians should not intentionally sin, more over sin of any kind gives Satan and the consequences of that sin an opportunity to destroy us. The question was posed can a Christian be demon possessed. My initial reaction and perhaps I should have stayed there, was no a Christian can not be demon possessed, only demon oppressed. However I think it was you that made the statement that you were not sure a Christian can not be demon possessed and that got me researching. The first scripture I came to was Leviticus 19:31 (NKJV) 31 'Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God. The word defiled jumped out at me. Admittedly this is not speaking to Christians but rather to faithful followers of God. It says don’t open yourself to mediums or familiar(demonic) spirits lest you become defiled by them. Implication here is this opens a door to demonic possession. To me Leviticus 20:6 (NKJV) 6 'And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people. Reinforces my take away of Lev 19:4. The second verse then referenced was 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 (NASB) 3 But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. 4 For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully. Admittedly I gave the wrong reference in my last post to you, sorry! In the verse depending on translation say different or another. Which implies the audience already has received a spirit. Since this verse is talking to Christians and says you can receive a different or another spirit other from a different or profane gospel. Implication here is that a Christian can receive ungodly or false spirits (demons?). As to drugs, alcohol and other sin we see in 1 Peter 5:8-9 (NKJV) 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. We are to be sober and vigilant. I think we all can agree we are not totally sober nor can we be vigilant we are involved in drugs, alcohol, or other forms of addiction and sin. It further warns us that Satan is walking about seeking. While it does not specifically say in so many words I interpret this as giving an opening to Satan to come in and destroy our lives. Here again I think we can all agree that demon possession would probably ruin our lives. I believe we have portals to our spirit mind. Our ears, our ears, our physical minds, these I believe must be guarded as Paul admonished us in Philippians 4:8-9 (NKJV) 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. Interestingly the verse before this Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV) 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Suggests that the peace of God guards our heart and minds through Christ Jesus. Again if your heart and minds are not on Christ Jesus the implication to me is we have opened ourselves for an attack from Satan. To clarify something that may have been misunderstood, I never meant to suggest that only certain sins opened us to demonic attack but that there were some listed specifically that to me implies they become gateways for demons. Like messing with the occult, familiar spirits, mediums, drugs, alcohol, addictions of any kind. I hope that explains or clarifies my position. I am still not totally convinced that a Christian can be demon possessed but I am not so positive that it can’t happen that I would not consider the possibility. That is something that in the past I would have never considered. |

In an effort to help make what I'm trying to say more clear to you, I need for you to tell me what you understand these passages to be saying. It appears clear to me but evidently not to you, so please explain to me what these passages are saying to you and I think it can help clear up this confusion |

106 | The Theology of the Cross | 1 Pet 5:11 | EdB | 243790
Doc last night a respected general was asked if he felt our army was the caliber of those that fought in World War 2. His answer I believe touches what you are saying. His answer was of those that are currently enlisted, yes they are every bit as dedicated, brave and noble of those that won freedom in World War two but if the draft would ever have to be used the men drafted would destroy our army. He went on to explain the soldiers of World War 2 were products of the great depression, that they were forced to learn and appreciate the meaning of life and liberty. They learned to survive through hard work and sacrifice. They toiled not just for themselves but for fellow man that this country could emerge for the depression. This has been lost to following generations. I think most know or understand history and see that our direction is in a downward spiral but few have the backbone to stand and try to change it. It is easier to float down the water that carries this country into the cesspool we find ourselves, where Christianity can be openly mocked while to do likewise to Islam would show intolerance and bigotry. Pastors can be belittled and vilified but celebrities are sought for wisdom and advice. We are now letting actors advise us on our political picks as if they have wisdom we do not possess. As I said in my previous post on another subject what we pay nothing for, we hold not value of, nor are we willing to protect it. We only treasure what costs us and what we have worked for. That is how we are wired as humans and God is well aware of that and I believe, even though this may fly in the face of free grace, true salvation requires much of us. |
||||||
107 | Real cost of Grace | Luke 12:48 | EdB | 243789
Anything gained with out price is usually not treasured or appreciated and rarely if ever guarded. David taught us this in 2 Sam 24:24. We see it today in the lives of many baby boomers and later generations, they are now inheriting the money made by their parents at no cost to them and we see them squandering it on frivolous things with little or no meaning. While salvation can not be bought I believe God requires much of us so that true salvation is not meaningless but instead we have learned to value it. My belief is that many in free grace churches holding no value for that grace for which they paid nothing for. |

108 | Do demons exist today? | Bible general | EdB | 243788
Sorry I was that I was not clear. My question was, what defines a Christian the name or a behavior within them or the fact they have closed all e trances into their being except those that Christ Himself opens. To clarify I believe there actions both Christians and non Christian can do that give Satan access into their lives. I am not talk about sinning as such but rather things that open our spirit being to attack. Example while messing with the occult is sin it also opens our being giving entrance to Satan. Likewise consulting a medium, tarot card readings, ouija boards, drugs, alcohol, and so forth. I believe to truly be a Christians we must be active in protecting the portals of our mind giving access to only to the things of God. I hope that clarifies what I was trying to say. |

109 | Do demons exist today? | Bible general | EdB | 243784
Interesting discussion. 2 Cor 11:3-4 seems to suggest that possession of a believer is possible. I think the question then becomes what is a Christian? Is it a name only or does it require a person to close all entrances to their being except that which is opened only by Christ? Wow seems like Christians have a lot to do. |

110 | The Church Visible and Invisible | Acts 12:1 | EdB | 243782
Rather than talk visible and invisible let us use the terms physical and spiritual as nothing is invisible to God or to the Holy Spirit that dwells within each Christian My concern is the physical church and the spiritual church has allowed itself to associate with sin. 2 Cor. 6:14-17. Far too often our desire to maintain a physical church deceives the spiritual church into allowing compromise into it. This should never happen. The world mocks the church today because of what it sees within the physical church. It sees compromise and all forms of hypocrisy and sin. The question is, is it possible for any of us to step into and out of this sinful union and then truthfully declare we are unaffected by that association? 2 Cor. 6:14-17 clearly states that we can’t. First Timothy chapter 3 and Titus 1:7-9 give us the qualifications for church leadership, I believe any and all violations of these qualifiers band that person from being a teacher or leader within the church, no exceptions. Their pontifications should not be received nor given any attention. To do so requires us to wink at their sin and puts us squarely in the conviction of 2 Cor 6:14-17. Yes the church is to pull sinner from the muck and mire of sin but no where is it remotely suggested that church gets into that muck and mire. To do so is the definition of dysfunctional and this is exactly how the world sees the physical church today as being dysfunctional and floundering like the rest of humanity. We say there is hope in Christ but the world sees little hope in the physical church. We can declare the spiritual church is pure but is it? In light of scripture association with sin will effect the spiritual church as well. Enough talk of all things great and small it is time the church returns to the place it was called, to holiness. 1 Thess 4:7, Heb 12:14, 2 Cor. 7:1. |

111 | The Covenant with Father Abraham | Luke 1:73 | EdB | 243781
Interesting discussion by Hodges on covenants but he neglected to mention that both covenants were Blood Covenants sealed and confirmed in blood. The covenant made with Abraham effected every aspect of Abraham’s life from the changing of his name from Abram to Abraham to the requirement that he circumcise himself and all his household. The Children of Israel became partakers of the covenant being of the bloodline of Abraham and also through the fulfillment of the requirement of circumcision. Blood Covenant goes far beyond our present day understanding of covenants. A blood covenant never broken or disregarded. Dr Livingston who researched the blood covenant process in Africa reported that in over 238 covenant that he witnessed none, not one, was ever broken or discarded. Relatives of a covenant makers would go as far as killing their own to prevent the covenant from being broken. Blood Covenants interestingly are found in every known culture ever discovered, which to me suggests a divine hand in the propagation process. It actually defines the covenant makers and their families. The New Covenant is made in the Blood of Jesus between Son and Father, man becomes partakers in this covenant through belief in it’s existence, as in Jesus died for our sins thus becoming our savior, which causes us to make Him Lord and Master of our lives. In Blood Covenant making, the witnesses (families, friends and mutual partakers of the covenant) came into covenant relationship through the drinking of the covenant wine mixed with the blood of the covenant makers. We too become sealed partakers of the New Covenant when we drink of the communion wine which Jesus proclaimed was His blood of the New Covenant. As Covenant members we are bound to keep the covenant, giving our lives to Christ as required by the covenant just as Abraham gave his life and his family’s life to the Old Covenant. This is why we are cautioned in 1 Cor. 11:27-30, the covenant process is the essence of our Christian lives and must be held in high regard, not something to be trivialized or dismissed as just a ritual. This aspect of the New Covenant gets lost, forgotten and frankly sweep under the carpet often times when the Covenant itself is spoken of. Scripture tells us we were BOUGHT at a price, it is no longer our lives but God’s who demands we glorify Him. 1Cor. 6:20. It defines us as God’s bond servants, bought and owned by God Himself. |

112 | Do demons exist today? | Bible general | EdB | 243776
Coming from a Full Gospel background we believe demons do exist and that believers can and must cast them out should they manifest in another (unbeliever). But this must be done carefully and with full consideration of consequences. Matthew 12:43-45 is but one example of a possible consequence. As I said earlier I do not believe a Christian can be demon possessed but they can be oppressed and Ephesians 6 gives us proper remedy for that. Demon possession of a nonbeliever must be carefully dealt with. As we see in the Matthew 8 account and from Matt 12 account we see demon when cast out will look for a place to move to. If someone casts a demon out of an unsaved person that demon will try to get back in or go into another unsaved person nearby. I have seen over enthusiastic preachers in church services trying to cast out demons with no thought of where that demon if it did come out would go to. They never considered the unsaved in the audience; they just wanted to demonstrate THEIR ability to rule over demons. That was total nonsense and I’m sure the demons and Satan laughed. Before anyone messes with a demon they must make sure their house is in order, their prayer life will sustain them, that they have humbled themselves in fasting to the point they know that they know this is what the Lord their God would have them do. Demons are defeated and the blood of Jesus is the Passover Blood on the lintels of our lives. We do not need to fear them but we should not ignore them but I am not one to preach about them as I feel this gives them more press than they should have. |

113 | The Church Visible and Invisible | Acts 12:1 | EdB | 243774
"The great and worldly-wise people take offence at the poor and mean form of our church, which is subject to many infirmities, transgressions, and sects, wherewith she is plagued; for they say the church should be altogether pure, holy, blameless, God's dove, etc. And the church, in the eyes and sight of God, has such an esteem; but in the eyes and sight of the world, she is like unto her bridegroom, Christ Jesus, torn, spit on, derided, and crucified. Martin Luther Jesus was innocent He was torn, spit on, derided, and crucified without cause, unfortunately today's church is not innocent. To our shame we present to the world a blemished view of Christ, and we often do it because of piety to things not of God. |

114 | As Christians should we openly support? | Rom 13:1 | EdB | 243772
Justme Excellent question! Romans 13:1 (NASB) 1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. I believe it is our duty as Christians to participate in this country’s election process no matter how upsetting that might be. Yes it is hard to vote for people with no moral compass such as in this election, both candidates are without that moral compass. So it must become a choice over what they will allow or will not allow. We could vote a party instead of a person but fact have proven that many candidates of one political party do not always hold to that parties agenda and often do the opposite. So yes we must accept or reject each candidate on their own merit. I can not believe any true Christian can vote for a candidate that supports abortion, is willing to use tax payer money to fund abortion and openly mocks any religion that stands against abortion. Like wise I do not believe a true Christian can vote for a candidate that is pro homosexuality, insists it must be taught in our schools and again mocks any religion that stands against promoting homosexuality. I think it is ordained duty of every called man of God to proclaim this to God’s people be it from the pulpit or whatever means is open to them. As I said both candidates for current presidential election leave much to be desired. But the issue that I see goes beyond filthy speech, lying, deceit, amoral behavior which both candidates are guilty of. We must choose the one that will protect our babies from abortion, from the homosexual agenda, and from lies both these causes shower upon our nation. That to me is the line in the sand and I have never seen it move. |

115 | Do demons exist today? | Bible general | EdB | 243770
Justme Beja gave you an excellent answer to your question, however I would like to add a comment and offer an answer to your question how do demons oppress Christians. First my comment, other than what is mentioned in scripture we know very little about demons. Scripture show us that they are fully aware of God James 2:19. They respectfully answer God when asked a question. Luke 8. They do not know the future Luke 8 asking to be sent into the pigs who would then run off the cliff. And they know their destiny Matt 8:29. Much that is written about demonology comes from teaching of Islam. While I agree they probably know a lot about demons being a false religion, we also know from scripture 1Tim 4:1 demons are liars so what Islam says about demons should be taken with a large grain of salt. As to the question about demon oppression on Christians. First let me say I have no medical degree, nor do a I claim to be a mental health expert. I do believe demons can oppress Christians and they do it by causing depression. I believe when a Christian suffers depression they have taken their eyes off Jesus and are looking instead at what deceiving demons are showing them. I understand that there is clinical depression caused by chemical imbalances but I think many cases of both diagnosed and undiagnosed depression in Christians is nothing more than demon oppression that occurs when a believer takes their eyes off Jesus. I pray that saying this is not offensive to anyone. |

116 | Nothing Illegal or Blameworthy | Deut 12:32 | EdB | 243750
Always interesting. Notice the emphasis on fasting, something rarely mentioned in today's church. Authorship aside it contains principals that every Christian should strive to live by. Sad so many ignore those principals in the name of societal changes. |

118 | God created | Gen 1:1 | EdB | 243747
An incredible way to look at GOD When GOD solves our problems, we have faith in HIS abilities. When GOD doesn't solve our problems HE has faith in our abilities. God's accuracy may be observed in the hatching of eggs. . . . . -those of the canary in 14 days; -those of the barnyard hen in 21 days; -eggs of ducks and geese in 28 days; -those of the mallard in 35 days; -The eggs of the parrot and the ostrich hatch in 42 days. (Notice, they are all divisible by seven, the number of days in a week!) God's wisdom is seen in the making of an elephant. . . . -The four legs of this great beast all bend forward in the same direction. - No other quadruped is so made. - God planned that this animal would have a huge body too large to live on two legs. - For this reason He gave it four fulcrums so that it can rise from the ground easily. -The horse rises from the ground on its two front legs first. - A cow rises from the ground with its two hind legs first. How wise the Lord is in all His works of creation! -Each watermelon has an even number of stripes on the rind. -Each orange has an even number of segments. -Each ear of corn has an even number of rows. -Each stalk of wheat has an even number of grains. -Every bunch of bananas has on its lowest row an even number of bananas, and each row decreases by one, so that one row has an even number and the next row a odd. Amazing. -The waves of the sea roll in on shore twenty-six to the minute in all kinds of weather. God has caused the flowers to blossom at certain specified times during the day. Linnaeus, the great botanist, once said that if he had a conservatory containing the right kind of soil, moisture and temperature, he could tell the time of day or night by the flowers that were open and those that were closed. The lives of each of us may be ordered by the Lord in a beautiful way for His glory, if we will only entrust Him with our life. If we try to regulate our own life, it will only be a mess and a failure. Only God, who made our brain and heart, can successfully guide them to a profitable end. I pray God blesses you in ways you never even dreamed. I didn't think twice about forwarding this one. When you carry "the Bible" Satan has a headache; when you open it, he collapses; When he sees you reading it, he loses his strength, and when you stand on the Word of God, Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil - it has no point. |

120 | Foot washing are still applicable today? | NT general | EdB | 243742
If you read John 13:1-17 you see Jesus washed the disciples feet. He didn't do it for hygene He did it to teach a lesson in humility. See John 13:7. Washing a brother's feet is a real lesson in humility for both the washer and the one who's feet are being washed. Be sure to read the above passage you will get a sense of what foot washing is. |
