102 | Define "praying in the Holy Spirit" | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27875
robert, you say in the end of your letter that you dont think the apostles were speaking in tongues..rather than people hearing their lingo. I dont know what you mean...especially when Peter stood up and quoted JOEL...the prophecy of tongues was included in that dissertation. Previous to that, you stated, the HS guiding our thoughts toward Christ at a much higher level?? I have to ask like ashestobeauty did....What is praying in the spirit? and now...understanding in the spirit? Now im starting to get confused. *SHALOM* |

104 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27873
EdB, IF I may? Thank you for your wonderful crispness and unselfish thoughts. Eloquence was used because your words were very well stated. It is nice to see a reasoned effort on your part to substantiate your love for the Lord in the way HE works. YOur love is not much different than mine, ashestobeauty, Hank, kalos, and the rest ive not mentioned. Your words sound alot like what Paul was saying "I would rather speak 5 words in my lingo than 5,000 in a tongue". It isnt surprising to me that TODAY is any different than Paul's day with the abuses we find. It shouldnt be, we were forwarned by Jesus and others. Godspeed to you .... **SHALOM** |

106 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27871
ashestobeauty, When I posted the question, I knew the responses I would get. There was intention to it, in the fact that I really want to know more about what alot of people call "the tongues issue". I have only gone to one church in my 10yrs as a Christian. And it happens to be AG. The first time I heard someone speak in a tongue I was totally freaked out. (which I find is common...both tongues and people freaking) An interpretation was then followed and a brief explanation by our pastor to what had transpired. Since then, many times I heard tongues ...no interpretation....words of knowledge with out tongues...and I can go on. But let me tell you, the first time was enough for me to seek counsel directly. And I did, first with questions to my wife who didnt know what to anwer other than look into HIS word. So I did, and 10yrs later...I dont think I have the total correct answer but I do believe I have a good grasp of what the tongues is for and how it should be utilized. We learn alot from 1Corinthians 12,13,14. And a few other books, but this letter by Paul was most influential in my conclusion. At this point I would hope you will allow me to address your post to Hank and Kalos. Please dont take this as a picking on you letter. I am not. I am only trying to help myself into a better understanding of this issue and hopefully to learn from it. I read literally everything I see and try to make a sense about it. So to your letter I saw some things I'd like to address and maybe learn from. In your first sentences you state that tongues is evedence that you are saved. You followed that quoting, "you shall know them by their fruit." I concur with the fruit as being a good helps in judging someones salvation. But I cannot say tongues is one of those fruit. The "fruit" that so often is quoted by US all I have found, is strictly the characteristics we are to have working through us, which is an extension of AGAPE love from the Lord. Gal 5:22,23 I would also like to know more about what you mean by: "It is one thing to have the Holy Sirit "dwelling in you" but you go to a whole other level when you allow Him to work in you, one of the ways to do this is through taking advantage of your gift of "speaking in tongues". You are giving Him Power to work in and through you." Your gift of tongues? Is it for everyone? IF so, and I do believe it is a gift from HIM ..just like all his other power gifts and less powerful gifts. Then why do I not flow in it? Could It be that I am trying to intelligize it or that I dont believe enough or that it isnt one of the gifts to work along the others HE has given me? You see, these questions have been usuals for me with this topic. I get told things like: I can enter a whole new/better/understandable level with God. Until, I start speaking/praying in tongues I dont know what I am missing out on. Your praying correctly to God for those things I dont know what to pray. I can add so many more to the list. I am not trying to say that your experience with this wonderful gift is wrong. I am not trying to dissuade your belief on this gift. All I want to say is....Godspeed to you m'lady. You have a wonderful understanding with HIM in this regard. As do I with the gift of prophecy and love and mercy, administration and teaching. Without those gifts from HIM I would not be who I am today in this world. Nor could I be discipled and be a discipler. Glory goes to HIM in the highest. ...Lord dont let me convolute the story... *SHALOM* |

107 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27870
KALOS, wheweeeeeeeeee.......what a grand observation..!! BRAVO! Your statement about experience and no experience being the view one has on doctrnine. When the Bible inteprets, defines, clarifies, shows itself to be dogmatic about a doctrine. IT ISNT OPEN TO our VIEW, or is it ? -our - is defined - children of God, not the non-believer. I dont think the LORD wants our opinion on HIS choice of standard. He just wants us to make a choice. Doctrinal issues should be only those that are essential to our salvation, any other things should should be given liberty. Agustine, says it best, "In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In All things, charity." Prov14:15, 15:28; 1Pet3:15; Ps119:46 Another favorite quote I enjoy.... If the literal sense makes common sense, seek no other sense or you get nonsense. Personally, I would only be dogmatic on doctrines that are eternal. Temporal doctrines will pass... ...Lord dont let me convolute your story... *SHALOM* |

108 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27692
Joe, Thank you my newfound brother. My question is a personal one, of course. But I did post the question for all others who feel the way I used to. I have been in constant contact with HIS word and I dont feel like I am losing anything by not having this gift. I have been granted other avenues to prosper His word. I dont find myself being insufficient other than not being able to understand how people come to the conclusions they come to. Reason is something the LORD wants us to come to. I too am in the same corner as yourself. Thanks for your lovely words. **SHALOM* |

Blessings to ALL, What a wonderful forum we all have here. Its so nice to see bretheren loving on each other with encouragement and exhortations!! Hope you dont mind if I put in my two mites. The Lord admonished us to keep an eye out during this time throughout the NT and in the OT. We find in Proverbs 15:28a, "The heart of the righteous studies how to answer...". The only way for us to know when what we hear or see being promoted as GOD is to look at the PLUMB line. the BIBLE. In order for us to know a counterfeit;we need to know what the TRUE is. Staying in HIS Word is the most important factor in all this. Finding study helps to guide you thru is important for all Disciples. Using a Strongs Exhaustive Concordance and a Vines Complete Expository Dictionary will be most helpful with personal studies. As you grow - other helps are available to us. Like this website. Learn also, to keep only that which is "..noble, lovely, profitable" and cast off that which is not. Godspeed to you all, Discipled *SHALOM* |

114 | Why LJC instead of just Jesus? | Acts 16:31 | The Disciple | 27250
Peace ALL, The name of GOD is very HOLY to the Hebrew and G_d is usually written in a incomplete manner. The L_rd is a very important and AWESOME name to them. This is done respectfully to who HE is and who they are. The Master and the clay, etc. In the O.T.: El Shaddai, Jehovah Shalom, Jehovah Nissi, and the other names stated throughout are in reference to who G_d was/is/will be. Each reference of HIS name can be seen as a character of who HE is and the attribute HE personified to the individual(s). As you read of HIS names maybe you too can think of when HE was Jehovah Shalom...the Lord of Peace during a time you needed peace. Or when HE was your Banner when you needed a forerunner. HIS name is most remarkable when you make it personal to yourself. Did you notice that when the Christ child was to be born we were told HE would be "called" Emmanuelle? "God with Us". Yet HIS name is "Jesus" - Joshua(Jeshua) which means Jehovah-saved. With Emmanuelle can we assume that it wasnt HIS name but HIS character we were being taught? If so, then can Jesus be the fulfillment of all the names of G_d in the OT and the attributes of HIS name? Be a Berean: Acts 17:11 ... Lord dont let me convolute the story ... *SHALOM* |

Hank, I agree with all you say about first and foremost importance is our relationship with HIM. Also, the NKJV and NASV are my usual course for study. It would seem we have the same mind in that respects, and of course not trying to make the other translations, transliterations, etc seem any less important. These of course are just a personal choice for the grammatical and literal sense. And for you to think your not of a caliber to be emulated...well...how about being a mentor instead? Which was what I was trying to say. *LOL* I too have a passion for prose but my structure is something to be desired. I dont want to go back to school for its been a few too many years since ive been there. And so far as I can see, since becoming a child of Christ, (1991) ive found my learning more on my own; drastically at a higher level and standard than what ive learned in the past from school. But my punctuation and use of sentences are minimal in understanding. I like teaching myself and have been a mentor to others over the years with wonderful blessings from HIM thru it all. Know this Hank, you are a mentor if others just want to read and grasp your heart of what you read. (You may not know your one). Hope we can correspond about Biblical dealings, questions that are hard to grasp personally and/or for others. josh2415@bigfoot.com is not my name...its Joshua 24:15 "...as for me and my house we will serve the Lord." .....Lord dont let me convolute the story..... Humbly yours, Discipled (soon to change to BeingDiscipled) *SHALOM* |

Lanny, Thats quite a interesting verse indeed. Castaway is defined in NKJV as disqualified and a cross ref is Jeremiah 6:30. I wonder if vs 27 Jer6 "..that you may know and test their way" casts a shadow on the person being tested? As in 1Cor9:11...."..those who are approved". Found to be believers of the True and not the heresies or NKJV says "factions"? What I think I am seeing is the LORD helping us to see it from HIS perspective. And not from our human perspective. With the LORD as THE "author and finisher of our faith" ...I would rather see HIS perspective in the case of my salvation. In that verse, "But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself have become disqualified." is Paul talking about salvation or is he addressing what others are testing: his qualifications of being a teacher, apostle, etc? His reputation seems to have been in question from the start of his ministry. After all, in Acts 17:11 he tells us the Bereans were more "noble" than the Thessolinicans. They tested all his teachings by scrutinizing from the their Bible to make sure what he was saying lined up. Personally, I dont think Paul was referring to salvation in this case. I would consider this to be personal to his ministry. Prov 15:28b was probably something Paul held dear. ....Lord dont let me convolute the story.... *SHALOM* |

Kalos, It would seem those who dialogue in here are just like the people i run into from time to time. And I too have been caught up in seeing more into a question or wondering why someone didnt give a better or more meaningful explanation. YET, we may find the simplest answers are the best and probably more in tune to how the Lord would have answered them. That is unless you go into parables ...ehehehe...for an answer. I certainly would enjoy further correspondence from you if you care to .... for me...iron sharpens iron as one man does for another....rightly dividing the word is what i desire the most(i hate to convolute the Word if i can help it) . I have found some very provacative words from many others in this forum and i would enjoy dialogue with anyone who cares to...so here is my email address. josh2415@bigfoot.com i am considering changing my nickname....its current status makes me sound like im a done product...when i am not...i should probably change it to BeingDiscipled....or something to that effect. I should have considered a bit more thought before making it my nick. My apologies to anyone to whom may think I am being arrogant using the past tense term. *Shalom* |
