Listen my brother we can go back and forth all night, but you will never convince me that Christs work was not sufficient. Either we are forgiven or we are not. I believe we are, and the reason I believe that is because thats what I see in the Word of God. We do not forgive to get forgiven, we forgive because we are forgiven. Peace |

Yes, I know Bob. We are cut from the same cloth. I came to this understanding as a result of seeing the spiritual scitzophrenia that is rampant in Christianity. I am forgiven but... I am saved but... I have eternal life but... It is just sad. People who are free in Christ, and they don't even know it, and are actually hostile towards it. |

Sorry, there is nothing in 1 John 1:9 about being out of fellowship. Those in the light are Christians, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin. Once we are saved, we are permanently in the fellowship because the blood of Jesus continually cleanses us from all sin. Therefore, we aren’t forgiven because we confess our sins. We are forgiven because of what Christ did for us on the cross. Those in the dark are non-believers, specifically, in this case, Gnostics.

There is no biblical support for two separate forgivenesses. Of course I disagree with your interpretation of 1 John 1:9. 1 John is a rebuke of gnosticism, it is within this context that John is writing. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." In other words, if the Gnostics were to confess they had sins, then God, Who is faithful and righteous, would forgive and cleanse them from their unrighteousness. In the Greek language, the words "forgive" and "cleanse" mean past actions that have results today and will continue to have results in the future. Also, the word "all" used in these verses means all. It doesn’t mean that we are cleansed of our past sins and our past unrighteousness, it means we were cleansed of all our unrighteousness. And if God cleanses us from all unrighteousness, then we are cleansed forever! That's the way the cookie crumbles for me. The sad thing is that without settling the forgiveness issue, the sin issue, one cannot truly move on to what is really important, and the thing that salvation is all about...the receiving of life. The only thing a dead person needs, is life. Peace |

I was with you and in full agreement right up to the "thus". The penalty for sin is death, not being out of fellowship. God forgives our sin because of the shed blood of Christ on the cross. If forgiveness is dependent upon us, then Christ died for nothing. |

How is it respectful to continually ask someone to give you what they have already given you? How is it acting like a spoiled brat to believe?

Again, we are back to where we started. There is this thing that occurred as a result of the work of Jesus Christ...it is called the New Covenant. It is called the New because it replaces the Old.

If you say in one breath that Christ’s crucifixation provides forgiveness, once and for all, and then in the next breath say we are forgiven only when we perform in a manner that causes us to gain God’s favor, God’s forgiveness, is this not double-mindedness? Is this not a mixing of the law and grace? Is this not exactly what Paul was addressing in the church at Galatians? “You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?” Galatians 3:1-3 |

All words express thoughts. That is the purpose of words. I did not say that Scripture is All the mind of God, but it is the mind of God.

Brother, I recognized you as such instantly. You know as well as I do that there will be those who will pick apart the verses you quoted, and then come back with verses that appear to contradict them. What does this accomplish? Words express thoughts. The words contained in the Holy Scriptures express the thoughts of God. The Bible is the mind of God. We can all read the words, even unbelievers, does that mean we all know the mind of God? If I use words that express the truth of God, are they any less valuable? If there is truth in them, do they not also originate with God? Is it the words that are valuable, or the thought behind the words that is valuable? Just a thought :) |

It's not my line of reasoning, it is God's truth. We all know what the Bible says, and all have their own interpretation of what it means. But, without the illumination of the Holy Spirit, it is impossible to truly know what it means. Is this not obvious from the various meanings people derive? It's very simple...We are not forgiven because of anything we do, we are forgiven because of Christ's shed blood on the cross. There is nothing we can do to "activate" that forgiveness. It was God's initiative, He consulted no one, he did not ask if you wanted it, He simply did it. If you choose to believe that you are not forgiven, that is your choice, but it in no way changes what Jesus accomplished on the cross. You are still forgiven. This is the example set forth throughout the Old Testament, with the sacrifice of animals. Jesus is the perfect lamb, who takes away the sins of the whole world. The Father accepts His Sons sacrifice as propitiation for our sins. He places our sins behind His back never to see them again. Not because of anything we have done...but because of what His Son has done. We forgive because we are forgiven. |

"How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?" Hebrews 10:29 In all honesty we are talking about the whole Bible here. One or two verses will hardly do it justice. |
