1 | Is God subject to change? | Bible general Archive 2 | stjones | 102243
Greetings, AO; I don't read Hebrew, so I'm trusting the translators. The immediate antecedent to "nor did it ever enter my mind" is "I never commanded or spoke of". I suggest that God was not surprised that the unfaithful did these things; he was upset that they did things which were so far from his will that he never once thought of commanding or even speaking of them. 2 | Is God subject to change? | Bible general Archive 2 | stjones | 102291
AO; Perhaps God can choose not to know some things; perhaps he cannot so choose because it would be a contradiction of his fundamental omniscient nature. I don't think, given its structure, that the passage presents enough evidence to decide the question. - Indy |

3 | Is God subject to change? | Bible general Archive 2 | stjones | 102306
Greetings, hooptrain; Welcome to the forum. I think God intends the Bible to be accessible to all believers and that he desires all believers to read and study it. There's no other way to tell if a modern-day prophet is real. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

4 | Are we supposed to observe the Sabbath? | Bible general Archive 2 | stjones | 103590
Hi, Search; [DISCLAIMER: If I misrepresent anyone's training in ancient languages, correct me and I'll gladly apologize.] PMJI, but I'm trying to understand this thread. If I get it correctly, a disagreement between two people over the eternal significance of the use of passive voice in a language neither one reads "proves" that one of them is against Jesus and preaching a different gospel. Is that about it? In contrast, Tim actually does read ancient languages and can understand an entire passage in context, something I don't think either you or Kathy can do. He says (paraphrasing here) the use of passive voice neither proves nor disproves that God did the initiating. I share your distrust of experts, but I gotta go with my fellow Hoosier on this one. Neither one of you has "proven" anything. Not about the passage, anyway.... How 'bout we debate how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? I'm sure we're all equally expert on that topic, and it's nearly as significant as this one. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

5 | Do you seek God before you post? | Bible general Archive 2 | stjones | 103705
Hi, Search; Possibly Kathy was implying that as Christians we may have obligations beyond merely conforming to the Lockman Foundation's rules. It is certainly possible to post a message that meets the requirements of the rules and yet is contrary to God's will. My answer is that sometimes I do indeed lean on my own understanding when I post. Other times, I seek God's will and have often re-written or simply skipped a message I had composed. The more curmudgeonly posts are mostly of my own devising. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

Greetings, punkiedo; I hope you won't think I'm piling on here. You recommended a website that denies an important doctrine in traditional Christian orthodoxy, so you should expect to be challenged. Surely you have found these views questioned in places other than this forum. Anyway, you didn't respond to the scripture Ed cited: "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'" Did Jesus descend upon himself like a dove? Did he speak from heaven to himself on earth? It's very easy to claim that every passage that mentions God the Father, Jesus the Son, or the Holy Spirit is speaking of the same person, calling him by different names. But it's a lot harder when all three appear in one scene - one person standing on earth, one speaking from heaven, and a third traveling between the two. How do you account for this passage? Thanks. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

Hi, punkiedo; I was curious to know if your Greek painter's views were consistent with the doctrine of the Greek Orthodox Church, so I turned to Google. My search for "greek orthodox trinity" turned up so many websites with the name "Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church/Cathedral" that I didn't bother to continue my investigation. I suspect that your Greek Orthodox believer was somewhat unorthodox in his beliefs. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

9 | Cool Website | Bible general Archive 2 | stjones | 107649
Hi, punkiedo; Yes, God is omnipresent and can probably do more than one thing at a time. I just haven't seen any other examples of God dividing himself into three simultaneous manifestations in order to do them. You seem to be saying that upon coming out of the water, Jesus descended upon himself and then from heaven proclaimed that he was his own son and he was pleased with himself. I assume he proclaimed his love for himself in a similar fashion at the Transfiguration as well. I'm sorry; you still haven't accounted for this passage. Given your doctrine, I don't see how you can. Thanks just the same. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

10 | Living Prophets? | Bible general Archive 2 | stjones | 108968
Paraclete; This is a Bible study forum. Joseph Smith's novel is irrelevant. Indeed, any book that begins with this monumental lie has no place here: "I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book." (Joseph Smith, Introduction to the Book of Mormon) Pardon me if I sound unpleasant, but nowhere does the Bible tell us to tolerate false teachers: "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute." (2 Peter 2:1-2) Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

Hi, mommapbs; I was afraid that I'd been a little too direct in my response. Glad to see you feel pretty much the same way. I suppose we should treat such foolish posts as trolls and just ignore them. -Indy |

13 | Was Adam and Eve's fall a good thing? | Bible general Archive 2 | stjones | 109045
Paraclete; This is really preposterous. There is falsehood here, but it's not in Eve's words to the serpent. You claim to know God's exact words to Eve. You don't. The Bible only records Eve's account of God's words. So if Eve did indeed "embellish the true words of God", you couldn't possibly know it. You also put the words "in that day" into Eve's mouth. Not even the Bible published on the LDS web site has Eve saying those words. Readers of the Bible will readily understand that Eve's initial sin was her disobedience to God, not some imagined "lie" that you have constructed for her. But perhaps I'm being too harsh. Maybe it was Joseph Smith who embellished the true words of God and you're simply repeating what you've been taught. I join with mommaphs in her prayer that your eyes may be opened to God's truth. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

"Paraclete"; It doesn't matter whether you call yourself a Mormon or not. This is still a Bible study forum, not a forum for promoting self-styled mystics who claim that their books are superior to the Bible. Nothing Joseph Smith ever said or wrote has any relevance to the discussions on this forum - except possibly to demonstrate how irrelevant his words are. If you know anything about what the Bible says, explain from Scripture why you believe it says what you think it says. If you don't know what the Bible teaches, feel free to ask. If you have no Biblical knowledge to impart and no desire to gain any, you have no part in this forum. -Indy |

15 | Living Prophets? | Bible general Archive 2 | stjones | 109151
Hi, Hank; I agree (although I think I missed "Context"). I'd thought to just ignore him/them, but mommapbs pointed out the danger of a seeker or naive Christian seeing that nonsense go unchallenged. I'll give the Devil his due though; I know more about the Book of Mormon than I did before. Could be useful knowledge in the future. OTOH, such posts appeal to my grumpy side which doesn't always produce the most sanctified behavior. :-) There are lots of people out there who hate the Bible and hate the real Jesus. I suppose an open forum like this is bound to attract a few such idiots now and then. Give the Devil his due again.... -Indy |

17 | On Harry Potter? | Bible general Archive 1 | stjones | 21316
Hi, Tim; I think your approach is very balanced - both in the way you deal with Harry Potter and your refusal to try to impose your approach on other parents. When kids grow up and go out on their own, they're going to decide for themselves what they believe and where to place their faith. I've read that the majority of kids who grow up in Christian homes go through a period of questioning or outright rejection when they find themselves with the freedom to make up their own minds. I think a child who has learned how to deal with Harry Potter (or R. L. Stine or Stephen King or, for that matter, Edgar Allan Poe) will grow into an adult better able to deal with Wicca, or New Age neo-paganism, or Tibetan Buddhism. Just my .02 dollars' worth. Peach and grace, Steve |

18 | name of lost book in Bible | Bible general Archive 1 | stjones | 21407
Hi, Nolan; Thanks for the URL. Yes, I've read some of this nonsense and you can see why proponents claim that they present "alternate Christianities" - they definitely don't square with orthodox Christianity. The screwball theologians have found a way to project postmodern relativism back to the first century. "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves" (2 Peter 2:1) Peace and Grace, Steve |

19 | did the wine from the water make you dr | Bible general Archive 1 | stjones | 22839
Non-biblical note about grapes and fermentation - The yeast that turns the sugar in grape juice into alcohol lives on the grape skins. When the grapes are crushed to get the juice, the yeast is mixed in with it. If the juice is not consumed right away (or the yeast killed or filtered out), the juice will inevitably become wine. Grape koolaid, if it existed, could become wine only over a period of several weeks. Either way, Jesus performed a miracle. Peace and grace, Steve |

20 | Are new worship songs scripturally OK? | Bible general Archive 1 | stjones | 23037
Hi, Lisa; [If you already know all this, I apologize. Maybe it'll be useful to someone else.] You're right, of course, about the Law, but please don't sell the OT short; it's the bible Jesus read and taught from. He obviously thought that his followers had something to learn from it. Consider this exchange: '"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."' (Matthew 22:36-40) This passage in known not only to Christians but to much of the world which calls it the Golden Rule and imagines that it was a brand new teaching of Jesus. But where is Jesus quoting from? the OT, of course: "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength" (Deuteronomy 6:5) "Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD" (Leviticus 19:18) The NT focuses on Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The OT focuses on God the Father but with many references and prophecies concerning Jesus and the Holy Sprit. I love the OT, especially Job, Jonah, and Ecclesiastes (weird, I know, but there it is). Just my .02 part of a dollar. Peace and grace, Steve |
