1 | What of Baptism? | Bible general Archive 2 | mom7x | 153596
Jesus himself was baptized by John. He commanded us to repent, believe, and be baptized. How is this a mere ritual rather than a matter of obedience? It is not the baptism with water that cleanses us from our sin, but our obedience is a sign that we believe. Just as Naman had to wash in the Jordan river to be cleansed from his leprousy, rather than another river closer to his home--as a sign of belief and obedience, not because the water of the Jordan itself was any better than any other water.(see 2 Kings 5)any time we say we are wiser than God, that we don't have to do what he tells us to, we are treading on dangerous ground.
2 | What of Baptism? | Bible general Archive 2 | mom7x | 153629
We are not saved by works, true. Yet our works are signs of our faith. The Bible also says that faith without works is dead.(James 2)In other words you can't have one without the other. To deem something mere ritual, when in fact, it is a matter of obedience is wrong. Whether this thing or that thing is a matter of "being doomed" I'll leave up to God. I guess what I would ask you is, regardless of what other people do, can yopu say of yourself that you are obeying Christ to the best of your ability if you know what he has commanded you to do and you don't do it? God doesn't just want us to be hearers of the word, he wants us to be doers of the word.(Rom 2:13) As far as other people go, I think we have to leave that up to God. I will not judge others, to say whether they be doomed or not. That is God's decision, for he alone knows the heart.(1 Sam 16:7) But it IS up to us to examine our heart. (2 Cor 13:5)What is keeping YOU from obeying in this instance?

If you are waiting for the perfect denomination, it won't happen. There are some that are strong in doctrine, and not as strong in living the word, and there are others that are very strong in living the way the word says, yet their doctrine is a bit weak. Then there are all the ones that fall somewhere in between.1 John 4 does tell us to test the spirits to see if they be of God, but then he proceeds to give us that test-namely, if you confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, and is Lord. To me, at least, this also addresses the fact that you believe that salvation is in Christ alone. Though there are many different denominations, most Christian churches according to this test are still of God. People are sinful, and churches they create will also be imperfect. The only church that is perfect is that one that will come into being when Christ comes again. Not all churches require you to become a member in order to be baptized. In fact, right now I am not a member of any particular church, though I do attend regularly. I am a member of the church of God, and whichever group of believers I choose to worship with is also part of that church.I guess I have seen this as a stumbling block in my own life, and sometimes an excuse to not do what God has commanded us. For me, the thing I struggled with was attending church, because I couldn't find one I agreed with wholeheartedly. Yet the Bible says not to forsake the gathering together with other believers. Do I then disobey God in hopes of finding a perfect church? |

4 | considering the situation | Leviticus | mom7x | 154162
I guess what I was trying to say is this. You asked what the Bible says about such a woman. It says she is a sinner. She has sinned by firstly, having relations with a man outside of marriage, secondly by having relations with both a man and his father. This is not to say she can not be forgiven- the Bible says that there is one sin only that is unforgivable-blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.(Matt. 12:31) Still, it is a serious situation. Leviticus makes this clear when it tells us that the penalty for adultery is death. (See Leviticus 20) Considering the woman is married to the father, though, and never has been to the son, I don't know what could be done to rectify the situation, other than repent wholeheartedly and ask for forgiveness both of God, and of her husband. God is gracious to forgive when we confess our sins(1John 1:9) |

5 | Pride is a good thing! Or is it? | Prov 23:7 | mom7x | 153477
Romans 3:23 speaks of us all as having fallen short, not measuring up. How then can we have pride in ourselves? What is worth having pride in? Is 64:6 "For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away." Our good works, accomplishments, are like filthy rags--how can we have true pride in that? Prov 29:23 "A man's pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor. " Our pride should be in our father, who washes us and purifies our works, because if it is in ourselves, our own works, it will bring us low. |

6 | why not? How does it not fit in? | Prov 23:7 | mom7x | 153628
I agree wholeheartedly...We ought to teach our children to boast, or be proud, not because of what they've done, not in their accomplishments, but in what God has done in them and through them.

8 | Why little sign of power in our churches | Mark 16:17 | mom7x | 156821
Suede, you say that these gifts will cease, that in fact they have ceased. I agree that Paul says the gifts will cease, WHEN THAT WHICH IS PERFECT HAS COME, as it says in 1 Cor 13. What makes the end of the century be "that which is perfect"? The gifts are temporary, yes. The only things that abide are faith, love and hope. It isn't until that which is perfect is come that that which is imperfect will pass away. The gifts of the Spirit have not gone away in America. There are many people who have been healed, many who speak in tongues, many who have been given a word of knowledge or prophecy...There could be more of course, but without seeing a need for it, and with being too comfortable with the way we live, putting our trust in doctors, or ourselves, the opportunity to see them expressed is limited. When we put ALL of our trust in the Lord, when we make Him our full focus, and when we ask him for whatever he has for us, that is when these gifts can become evident. A pastor is not necessary for this-I know of people who were part of a church who believed as you do, that the gifts were no longer for today. Yet, as they praised God, they were blessed with the gift of tongues. When they went to their pastor, he told them that it sounded as though they had received the gift of tongues "but such things don't happen anymore." We need to be open to what God has for us, whatever that may be. I once believed as you do, that Pentecostals were wrong, that the gifts experienced in those types of churches were due to hysteria, but having gone to one of these churches, having seen healings, including a woman who had been using a cane for a long time, who was able to throw her cane away and walk, I can no longer say it isn't for today. 9 | Why does he fall asleep at church? | Luke 8:15 | mom7x | 153476
I would agree with this except for the fact that he doesn't have problems falling asleep at any other time. Of course the flesh has something to do with it too, but Satan's greatest joy is to keep us from God...having had a problem with this very issue myself, and having overcome it, all I can say is that it has worked for me. Getting enough sleep is of course a given-I guess I see that as obvious. But when you do everything you can to solve the problem, I see it as spiritual warfare-not that we blame the devil for everything we do wrong, but that we recognize that he does have an influence on our lives when we don't use the ways God has given us to fight back. |

10 | can anyone keep the 10 commandment? | Eph 2:8 | mom7x | 154103

11 | what is salvation and how does it work ? | Eph 2:8 | mom7x | 154110
Great answer!! I guess it all comes down to what you mean by being saved. If you mean you prayed a prayer, I guess it would depend on whether you prayed it with your heart, or just your mouth. When you have been born again, been transformed by the renewing of your mind,(Romans 12:2) You cannot reverse that change. Without a change, you cannot claim salvation. If you are truly saved, and then backslide or wander, God will search for you as a shepherd looking for a lost sheep. |

12 | The rest of God? | Heb 3:19 | mom7x | 154135
Yes, that is exactly what I mean when I said that when we don't believe, we are disobedient. However, the question was "is there a difference between unbelief and disobedience". There is...We can believe, but still be disobedient. They are not one and the same. However, unbelief in God will always be disobedience, because God has commanded us to believe, trust, acknowledge, and serve Him, which is impossible without believing.
