(Mark 7:8 NASB) "Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men." Just because it is a tradition does not mean it is neglecting the commandent of God. Siting in rows of pews is a tradition of men. Is it against the commandment of God? |

2 | How did alter calls or invitations start | Bible general Archive 2 | shalor | 102625
What is often shocking to many who use the modern invitation system is that the altar call is just that modern. The practice, although widespread, is a very new phenomenon in the Christian church. For nearly nineteen centuries no one had ever heard of the practice. Such well known evangelists as George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, and even John Wesley had never even heard of such a custom. And Charles Spurgeon, that passionate winner of souls par excellence, although well acquainted with the practice, firmly refused to adopt it and even criticized it severely. Ironically, "the old fashioned altar call" was unheard of until the nineteenth century. It first came into being by the influence of Charles Finney, the pioneer of modern evangelistic methods. In Finney's crusades (c. 1830) seats at the front were reserved for those who, after the sermon, would respond to the challenge to come to the Lord's side. Those who were thus "anxious" for their souls were invited to walk forward to the "anxious seat" where counsel and prayer would be given them. The following quote from Finney's Lectures on Revival explains his view well. "Preach to him, and at the moment he thinks he is willing to do anything . . . bring him to the test; call on him to do one thing, to make one step that shall identify him with the people of God. . . . If you say to him, "there is the anxious seat, come out and avow your determination to be on the Lord's side," and if he is not willing to do a small thing as that, then he is not willing to do anything for Christ." The practice was designed to force decisions, to get results. So it did, and with slight variations the new method spread with increasing popularity through Finney and, later, Dwight L. Moody, and finally into virtually all of nineteenth and twentieth century evangelicalism. Peter Cartwright, Sam Jones, R. A. Torrey, Billy Sunday, Bob Jones, Gipsy Smith, Mordacai Ham, John R. Rice, Billy Graham all employed the method with impressive success. The invitation system had come to stay. 3 | can all churches worship together as one | 1 Cor 11:18 | shalor | 102620
Eph 4: 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. Paul tells us to preserve (not create) the unity in a bond of peace. The Unity of the church is through the Spirit as we all have the same calling. We don't all have to be under the same ecumenical body here on earth to be all united to God in the Spirit through Christ. |

5 | What needs to be reconciled in heaven? | Col 1:20 | shalor | 102459
(Col 1:20-22 NASB) and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach-- Col 1:20: (vv. 20-22) Notice that peace with God is made "through the blood of His cross." The substitutionary nature of this reconciliation (atonement) is seen in vv. 21, 22; from being "alienated and enemies in ... mind" because of works of wickedness, the Christian has moved in Christ to being "reconciled ... holy ... blameless ... above reproach in His sight." Christ, on the other hand, went from being the spotless Lamb of God to being sin on our behalf (cf. 2 Cor. 5:21). Any theology that denies the substitutionary atonement of Christ or neglects the saving power of His sacrifice and the necessity of His shed blood, no matter how impressive otherwise, is a false theology with no power to save. The cross of Christ is a constant reminder of proud mankind's inability to generate its own salvation. The substitutionary atonement is not one theory among many, but an eternal fact reflected in many scriptural metaphors. |

What a Church is : A body: Paul says the church is a body under the control of its Head. What a tragedy it would be if that body refused to respond to the direction of its Head! In realm of medicine, there are diseases which ravage the nerve pathways which enable the human brain to control the human body. It is tragic and heartbreaking to see a person bound to a wheelchair or hospital bed, unable to control his movements and body functions. A church which is unresponsive to its Head is every bit as tragic and heartbreaking to watch. A temple: The church is also a temple for the exclusive habitation and use of a Person who dwells within, and who has the right to do with that temple whatever He wills. An army: The church is an army under the command of a king. An army that will not obey its leader is useless as a fighting force. Therefore, says Paul to the church, obey your orders, follow your Head. Church Purpose Purpose No. 1: The church is to reflect God's holiness Purpose No. 2: The church is to reveal God's glory. Purpose No. 3: The church is to be a witness to Christ. Church Mission Christ’s universal church and every local assembly have a threefold mission: (a) evangelism, i. e., going into all the world to make disciples through proclamation of the gospel in word and deed; (b) edification(discipleship), i. e., bringing every believer into personal and corporate maturity; (c) worship, i. e., giving heartfelt praise to the God revealed in the Word. None of the three may be subordinated. Rather, each aspect of this mission enhances the other two. For example, churches should not subtly discourage evangelism by stressing Bible study, but rather recognize that equipping members for evangelism is an integral part of their edification. |

9 | EXPLAIM CHAPTER 3 VERSE 5 | John | shalor | 102342
God must make you clean. Ezek 36 explain how he does it. Water baptism is by man and is symbolic but commanded by Christ. (Ezek 36:25-27 NASB) "Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 "And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. The water is the washing of regeneration described in Titus 3. (Titus 3:5-7 NASB) He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that being justified by His grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. |

10 | So Satan can take control of us?? | Bible general Archive 2 | shalor | 102264
One's own will is incapable of dealing with evil But through the power of Christ we can rebuke Satan and he will flee from us. (Eph 6:11 NASB) Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. (James 4:7 NASB) Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (1 Pet 5:8 NASB) Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Christ has that power and we must use his power and then Satan can be dealt with. |

(Rev 5:5-10 NASB) and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals." 6 And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. 7 And He came, and He took it out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. 8 And when He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, having each one a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy art Thou to take the book, and to break its seals; for Thou wast slain, and didst purchase for God with Thy blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. 10 "And Thou hast made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth." (John 10:27-30 NASB) "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand. 29 "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 "I and the Father are one."
