Cute pun, Raven! If we are going to have gazillion dollar church buildings, they may as well have gymnasiums and pools, don't you think? I find it odd that "church" has come to mean what it does. "Ekklesia" has nothing to do with brick and mortar structures, but the paradigm of the modern American church goer is such that they can't tell the difference between the "assembly" or "congregation" on the one hand, and the building, on the other. If you're not familiar with ekklesia(or ecclesia?), it is the word in the NT that gets translated as "church." But it has much more to do with the gathering of believers and nothing to do with the place where they were gathered, which was almost always someone's home. In this context, the question you raise cannot be answered because the assembly of believers does not have concrete for a foundation, nor asphalt for roofing and parking. This shift in the definition has and will continue to cause problems. There is a home church movement, but they are usually seen as fundamentalist zealots and targets of a BATF hit squad. It remains to be seen whether they will gain any popularity at all. They are among the most "complete" Christians I have known. But given our American consumerist fleshly tendencies to want to be associated with "winners," I have my doubts. Which brings us to large expensive additions to the building. As far as stewardship is concerned, it can probably be shown that big money attracts big money. We're all subject to the hysteria of the "big and glitzy." God can use that too, but he sure doesn't like sharing any glory. Especially, i believe, when it's a "religious" object, like a church building. How all this will pan out I haven't a clue, Raven. I think we'd best be on our knees. |

3 | interracial origins and marriage/child | Bible general Archive 1 | let it rain | 51562
I've been told that black people originated when one of Moses's son's was maikung fun of him for being drunk. I agree with the others regarding bigotry. It has no place in the kingdom. I disagree that God turned any people group black (or white - I see no evidence that Adam was a white guy) as a punishment or a reward, for anything. One of Noah's sons made fun of him when Noah got drunk and saw him naked. For that bit of irreverence, Noah cursed his son AND his descendants to be servants. See Gen 9(for the story), 10(for the genealogy of Noah's descendants) and 11(for the story of the tower of Babel, which some believe shows how families became people groups, which became ethnicities, which became nations.) God bless you and your family. "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do" applies to each and every one of us. We are equal oppurtunity sinners, and our Jesus is an equal oppurtunity savior. I pray that our obsession with race can come to an end soon. Let it rain on all |

4 | Eternity - the real bottom line? | Acts 2:38 | let it rain | 51500
Thanks for your response. If I had written the bible all these world shattering questions would have been answered to the last detail...I'll have a chat with daddy when he's done burning the dross off me! For instance, the eunich asked Phillip, "what prevents me from being baptized?" Were I the author of this episode, there would have been a real impediment to the baptism, and gone into what may happen if it were not completed before his death. It's a pretty extreme case, but it's a fair question. I think that if there is something in the way, a "No Trespassing" sign, or heart attack, then the Lord sees the heart's desire for his forgiveness. But i truly feel like we're mocking his word when we say baptism isn't necessary (for anything) when his word so clearly demands it. It's not a suggestion, and it's not a "grammarical error" that can't be understood. It's a command. I guess I'll let others be theologians and be happy that as his child, I'm accepted as his own. |

5 | Does Mt. 22:39 assume self-love? | Matt 22:39 | let it rain | 51428
Compare Mt 22:39 with Phil 2:3. The principle in this verse is one which we don't hear much of anymore. It just doesn't fit in a consumer driven "me first" society. It's called "deference." Phil 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; No one needs to be taught to love themselves more. That, according to scripture, is already our problem. Jesus never said our problem is that we don't love (or "esteem") ourselves enough. |
