1 | Prov 31 Does it apply to modern woman? | Prov 31:10 | japii | 83690
v17 She cares for herself, note this passage is really two references, first "She girds herself with strength" her spirit is strong, she seeks and maintains a constant relationship with the LORD and then she "And strengthens her arms." she cares for herself physically v18 A qualification: Here I suspect that my interpretation is likely influenced by my experiences in the world, but I read this as this Prov. 31 woman being one of strong self love, strong self-esteem if you will as she knows that not only is the fruit of her hands good but she herself is good and worthy of honor. Her lamp not going out by not night I read as her willingness to spend "quality" time with her husband v19 again, an inclination to work with her hands in two ways, one to do the work that is less strenuous and more meticulous (holds the spindle) while at the same time not shunning the more arduous tasks (stretches out her hands to the distaff) v20 she has a compassionate heart, despite all the work she does she is still inclined to share with others less fortunate, her experiences in the world have not left her hard hearted and bitter v21-22 with all else: working, caring for the household and husband can the modern working woman also make sure her family is ready for the hard times? And, simultaneously make sure her clothing is attractive, comfortable and pleasing to behold? v23 First off her husband would have to be of some merit to have such a position and one would wonder why this line is mentioned in a text about a "virtuous wife?" I suspect because no man can achieve such merit unless a few things are true first, his household is in order such would include his financial affairs, and the state of his family (is that possible without a Prov. 31 wife?); secondly he has the support of his wife she helps keep appointments, tends to health and meets his needs and joins him in worship and devotions so the man the public sees is one of God-given self assuredness, worthy of being "known in the gates" and a seat among the elders v24 I submit this portion of the text supports and confirms that the Prov 31 wife has income activity from outside the household v25 nothing in her actions or comportment implies anything less than honorable, no lunches or late night work sessions that could raise an eyebrow; no after-work respites with the "girls from the office" that could cause concern... v26 This should not be exclusive to women nor to anyone from any point in time... v27 Yes, we know you work hard but what's going on at home right now? Do you know? and if idleness is an option for any working wife/mother then your issue is greater than being concerned about meeting the tenets of Prov. 31 v28-29 The question is not "Where is mommy today?" nor is it "Is mommy working late again?" Enough said... v30 Grace and appeal is nice but useless in the long run unless a real relationship with the LORD is in place. v31 The Prov. 31 woman must benefit from her own labor, such will be obvious to all who see and part of that benefit will be the praise of those over the city "How to excel as a career woman and yet not threaten the love of her life for being the intelligent, wise, virtuous partner of his life?" In light of the above analysis I will readily admit that such may be a "tough row to hoe" and let's be real: it may not be possible at all. In such a case perhaps a reassessment of family priorities is in order. But no matter what let all you do be to the Glory of GOD. |

Part I I am not a Bible scholar, only a layman but here is my "take" on the subject: Proverbs 31:10-31 The Virtuous Wife v10-11 One of the common issues I see arise in modern couples is trust, mostly in the area of finances. It is not usual for the woman to make more than the husband and while this should not be a problem it tends to make the wife less inclined toward mutual submission with her husband; likewise in the absence of joint goals and pooling of resources trust will be a factor whatever teh circumstances;finally recall "11The heart of her husband safely trusts her" He is comfortable sharing all he has inside without fear such will be discussed around the office -ever. v12 Just the husband has a duty and obligation to make his wife, her care, comfort and well being a priority so does the wife. No we are not talking June Cleaver here but the whole mutual submission keeps coming up, how so? let's face it in this society any level of womanly ambition requires her to have considerable focus, just as it does with her husband. Just as it would be wrong for the husband to be so focused on his career/business to be neglectful of his wife, likewise no woman can be akin to this Prov. 31 woman with a similarly narrowly focused drive. v13 After 4, 6 maybe 8 years of education can you still be enthusiastically willing to "work with [your] hands," in modern times such may be equated with repairing holey socks or burst seams or button replacement. The easy answer is to send it to the cleaners/tailoring/seamstress shop for repairs but wouldn't those resources be better used elsewhere? v14 DANGER AREA: Cooking! Can the "modern" woman do all she does and still be responsible for her family meals? Note: the question is not can she work full time and still do all the cooking (although that is what this Prov. 31 woman did) but is she willing to control what her family eats? can she make it easy/simple for her husband and herself to regularly prepare good -and interesting ("like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar")- meals that they both or all would enjoy and would likewise be good for them? v16 within the realm of the marriage she uses her own resources to engage in astute transactions that do not remain hidden, kept discreet as part of some long term "exit strategy" but rather she not only sees a profit but uses the profit for yet another activity that will profit the family and by extension serve to glorify the LORD; |

3 | What are the last 7 words scriptures? | Luke 23:34 | japii | 81720
I found this on my own search today at work, today was the first time in a long time I missed Good Friday services! (only because of work!) THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST Ben H. Swett Bethany Christian Church Easter 1974 Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34) Soldiers have just driven nails through his hands and feet and hoisted him up by those nails. He does not fear those who kill his body; he pities them and prays for them. If they knew how much this hurts, they could not do it to anyone. They are unwitting instruments of the higher purpose that brings him here. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?(Matthew 27:46) But physical torment takes its toll. He suddenly discovers that he cannot hear the still, small voice; he has lost his two-way communication with God. His lifeline is not working, so he must face the the narrow gate of death alone. He said to his mother, Woman, behold your son! Then he said to the disciple, Behold your mother! (John 19:26-27) Not quite alone. He looks down. Which hurts worse: the pain of being crucified, or the pain of a mother watching her son be crucified, or the pain of a boy whose beloved teacher hangs bleeding before his eyes? He understands their pain in the midst of his own, and tells them to care for each other. I thirst! (John 19:28) Time passes slowly. His spring of living water runs dry. He reaches the end of his strength. This is the moment the Tempter has been waiting for: through the voices of cynical men, Satan tries again, as he did in the wilderness: If you are the Christ, prove it! Save yourself and impress the people. Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. (Luke 23:43) But a dying thief says, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. What the cynical voices suggest is not the way to prove he is the Christ. His kingdom is not of this world. He ignores them and reassures the thief. It is finished! (John 19:30) He has defeated the Tempter again. Despite the agony, he has rejected temptation and cared for those around him. His temporary duty on earth is complete. He has shown the way God wants us to live. He has demonstrated the fact that faith and hope and love cannot be destroyed by anything men can say or do. Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit.(Luke 23:46) Like a trusting child, he turns to the Father and takes the next step. He has bound himself by love, to both God and the human race. Soon he will begin his long-term ministry by demonstrating the fact that human beings survive physical death. Then he will continue to draw to himself, and thus to heaven, everyone he can ... for as long as it takes ... until whosoever will has come. |
