1 | Can a toddler go to heaven? | Rom 3:23 | goodnewsminister | 88103
Well, No they cannot. Acts 4:12 says that 'there is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved' and since toddlers of those ages cannot believe in Christ for their minds are not mature enough to do so, they will not be members of the 'overcoming' Church, who alone with Christ will be given heavenly glory and be given authority over the nations in His coming Kingdom. However, they are of the stock of Adam and will all receive resurrections back here to human life on earth as John 5:58,59 states they will, and the Bible seems to indicate that they will be resurrected at the same age that they died, so that their parents and or other family members will be able to raise them during the Millenial Kingdom of Christ to manhood or womanhood. They will remain here upon the earth forever, as God's perfected human children in the paradise that will be restored to mankind by the Church class in the coming Age. Aborted babies? Same answer as above, but as far as the Scriptures say, unless they have breathed the breath of life, unless they've come forth from their mother's womb in birth, then they are not yet 'souls' and therefore will be as though they never had been, i.e. they are not promised a resurrection because they were never born and thus shall they stay. This is also in agreement with the Jewish concept of birth, a baby in the Jewish mind is not a soul until it has taken it's first breath after leaving the mother's womb, before that, the baby just isn't a soul yet so it has no promise of a resurrection. Because soul in the Hebrew means an 'air-breathing'creature and embryos are not yet 'air-breathing'. This also the same in the Spiritual sense as well, as 'bogotten again' New Creatures, we are not 'born again' until we take our last breath as a human and take a our first 'breath' as it were, as a Born Again child of God of the divine nature-although I do not believe that we'll need air as divine creatures, just using this as an illstration. To be 'born again' would be to already have partaken of the divine nature and to already be spirit creatures and hence, no one in the flesh may say that they are 'born again', but only 'begotten again'. Hence, if we fall away and are condemned to the Second Death, as the Church is under the treath of the Second Death being that we are the FIRSTBORN of God's new creation, just as the FIRSTBORN among Israel were subjected to the Death angel in Egypt, so also, we must REMAIN under the blood of Christ until we finish our earthly course or else Christ returns and we're changed in an instance in the twinkling of an eye in the FIRST resurrection. IF we, as members of the Church, fall away, Hebrews assures us that it is IMPOSSIBLE to restore us again to repentence and we'll die the second death and hence not be 'New Creatures' any longer, but dead ones for all eternity. I hope this answers your questions. In Him, The Good News Minister! |

2 | Jesus says I AM | Bible general Archive 1 | goodnewsminister | 87837
Dear Sven, I do not believe He was claiming diety here, He was saying, as it is rendered in another version I have, that is published by the Philippine Bible Society, "Before Abraham was, I was already here in existence", Also, note that the same Greek words used by Jesus here, saying, "I am" were also used by Paul and the other Apostles throughout the New Testament. The explanation mark is not in the original, so disregard it in the English rendering. Yes, Proverbs chapter 8 describes our Lord's preexistence in these words: 22 "The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, [2] , [3] before his deeds of old; 23 I was appointed [4] from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began. 24 When there were no oceans, I was given birth, when there were no springs abounding with water; 25 before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, 26 before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world. 27 I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, 28 when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, 29 when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. 30 Then I was the craftsman at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, 31 rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind. speaking thus of His preexistence with the Father for ions of time before even the earth was created, Jesus dwelt with the Father and became like Him in every way, hence, Jesus could say that, "If ye have seen me, ye have seen the Father", for as Hebrews states Jesus is the "express image of the Father." John 14:9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? The Jews did not ever teach that the Messiah was to be God in human flesh, such is foreign to Jewish thought and as Christians, we should base our beliefs on Judaism, as Jesus Himself was a Jew. He was a 'corresponding ransom' for Father Adam, and as such, was Adam's equal before the fall. He balanced out the scales of justice for us all and redeemed us all back to His Father and to His God and our God. O How great a Savior do we have indeed! Praise be unto His Name! |

3 | Does Luke 16 use the term 'parable'? | Luke 16:23 | goodnewsminister | 87820
I must disagree with you here, Brother Moran, as the Pharisee were present in the Luke 16 and we know that Jesus did not reveal truth to them, but He always used parables when speaking to the people in the presence of the religious crowd of His day. However, you are entitled to your understanding of this and I respect your view. In Him, The Good News Minister |

4 | What is our soul | Bible general Archive 1 | goodnewsminister | 87804
Dear Sven, Here are the Bible's answers to your questions: (1) What is man made of anyway? Genesis 2:7 reads,"And the Lord God formed man out of the DUST OF THE GROUND, and breathed into his nostrils THE BREATH OF LIFE and man BECAME a living soul." So the Bible plainly states that the DUST OF THE GROUND- OUR BODY PLUS the BREATH OF LIFE - OUR SPIRIT equals or adds up to our very LIFE- our SOUL. (2) Isn't he three parts? No, Man is NOT a trinity, just as God is NOT a trinity. We are SOULS, we do not HAVE souls. Our Body combined with the breath of life or the ability to breath or vitality, the same vitality that is in the animal kingdom is what makes up our SOUL, our very life and being. Ecclesiastes 3:19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all ONE breath [the breath of life from God] ; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. (Whole Chapter: Ecclesiastes 3 In context: Ecclesiastes 3:18-20) The difference between us and the brute beast is that we have what the Bible calls,'the spirit in man', this spirit in man, given by God to ALL mankind is what is combined with our human brain to form our mind, will and emotions. We all need God's Holy Spirit in order for us to be able to truly understand and comprehend spiritual truths. Adam and Eve were created physical beings, they are not spiritual beings and neither are we, unless we receive God's Holy Spirit and become spirit begotten children of our Heavenly Father.1 Corinthians 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. (Whole Chapter: 1 Corinthians 2 In context: 1 Corinthians 2:10-12) Yes, we are a complete being, a soul, if any ONE of our parts that makes us up is missing, i.e., either the breath of life or the body, our life-our soul dies and ceases to exist until the Resurrection. Yours for Truth, The Good News Minister |

6 | is december 25th the day christ was born | Gal 4:4 | goodnewsminister | 87721
THE DATE OF OUR LORD'S BIRTH In the sixth century the Church began to reckon time from the birth of our Lord, and fixed the date A.D. as it now stands; namely, 536 years after the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia. Whether they placed it correctly or not does not affect the chronology as just given, which shows that the six thousand years from the creation of Adam ended with A.D. 1872; because it is eighteen hundred and seventy-two years since the year designated A.D., and the first year of Cyrus was five hundred and thirty-six years before that year (A.D.), whether it was the year of our Lord's birth or not. The year A.D. was fixed upon as early as the sixth century by Dionysius Exiguus, and other scholars of that period, though it did not come into general use until two centuries later. We cannot, perhaps, explain this better than by the time-worn illustration of a line with a star upon it--thus: B.C._____________________-____________________A.D. Let the line represent the six thousand years of earth's history from the creation of Adam to 1873 A.D.; and let the star represent the turning point between B.C. and A.D. To move that point either way would not alter the length of the entire period, though it would alter the names of the years. To move the A.D. point backward one year would make the B.C. period one year less, and the A.D. period one year more, but the sum of the B.C. and A.D. years would still be the same; for the amount taken from the one is always an addition to the other. Nevertheless, let us briefly examine the date of our Lord's birth, as it will be found useful in our subsequent studies. It has become customary among scholars to concede that our commonly accepted A.D. is incorrect to the amount of four years--that our Lord was born four years previous to the year designated A.D., that is, in the year B.C. 4. And this theory has been followed by the publishers of the common version of the Bible. We cannot agree that B.C. 4 was the true date of our Lord's birth. On the contrary, we find that he was born only one year and three months before our common era, A.D., namely, in October of B.C. 2. The general reason with most of those who claim that A.D. should have been placed four years earlier to correctly mark the Savior's birth, is a desire to harmonize it with certain statements of the Jewish historian Josephus, relative to the length of the reign of Herod the Great. According to one of his statements, it would appear that Herod died three years before the year reckoned A.D. If this were true,it would certainly prove that our Lord was born in the year B.C. 4; for it was this Herod, that issued the decree for the slaying of the babes of Bethlehem, from whom the infant Jesus was delivered. (Matt. 2:14-16) But is this statement of Josephus reliable? Is it true that Herod died four years before the year A.D.? No, we answer: Josephus alone is not sufficient authority for such a decision, as he is known and admitted to be inaccurate in his record of dates. [Part 1, to be continued] |

WHAT IS "HELL"? SHOCKING as it may seem, you may go to "hell"! Many of your loved ones are RIGHT NOW in "hell"! But don't be alarmed! You probably never heard the TRUTH about what "hell" really is -- and where all of YOUR ideas on the subject came from in the first place. You probably just accepted, WITHOUT QUESTION, this world's idea of a horrifying, nightmarish place of never-ending torture for lost sinners. It's time we QUIT "swallowing" the IDEAS and THEORIES of confused humanity, and begin STUDYING the truth for ourselves in GOD'S Word! The Common Idea of Hell FIRST, let's notice the generally accepted common belief in our Western world about hell. Here's the terse and brief summation of this popular belief, from the "Encyclopedia Americana": "... As generally understood, hell is the abode of evil spirits; the infernal regions ... whither lost and condemned souls go after death to suffer indescribable TORMENTS and ETERNAL punishment .... Some have thought of it as the place created by the Deity, where He punishes, with inconceivable severity, and through all eternity, the souls of those who through unbelief or through the worship of false gods have angered Him. It is the place of DIVINE REVENGE, untempered, NEVER ENDING. This has been the idea most generally held by Christians, Catholics, and Protestants alike. It is also the idea embodied in the Mohammedan's conception." From the Pagans Now where, and how, did this popular belief about hell ORIGINATE? The "Encyclopedia Americana" states: "The main features of hell as conceived by Hindu, Persian, Egyptian, Grecian, and Christian theologians ARE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME." The Western religious leaders through the Middle Ages borrowed the doctrine of eternal torture FROM THE PAGAN PHILOSOPHERS. Certain of these writers of the Middle Ages had such tremendous influence on the Christian-professing world, that their writings and teachings came to be generally accepted and believed, until it became the doctrine of the Christian-professing world. Among these influential writers were Augustine (345-430 A.D.), and Dante Alighieri (1265-1321 A.D.). Dante wrote a tremendously popular book titled, "The Divine Comedy", in three parts -- HELL, Purgatory, and Paradise. There is another book titled "Dante and His Inferno", which sums up the history of the Christian-professing doctrine of HELL. This factual history says that "of all poets of modern times, Dante Alighieri was, perhaps, the greatest educator. He possibly had a greater influence on the course of civilization than any other man since his day ... he wrote, in incomprehensible verse, an imaginative and lurid account of a dismal hell -- a long poem containing certain phrases which caught the attention of the world, such as, 'ALL HOPE ABANDON ... YE, WHO ENTER HERE!' This had a tremendous impression and influence on the popular Christian thought and teaching. His 'Inferno' was based on Virgil and Plato." DANTE is reported to have been so fascinated and enraptured by the ideas and philosophies of PLATO and VIRGIL, who were pagan philosophers, that he believed they were divinely inspired. Here is an article on Virgil, from the "Americana": "Virgil, pagan Roman poet, 70-19 B.C., belonged to the national school of pagan Roman thought, influenced by the Greek writers. Christians of the Middle Ages, including Dante, believed he had received some measure of divine inspiration." PLATO was a pagan Greek philosopher, born in Athens, 427 B.C., a student of Socrates. He wrote the famous book, "Phaedo", on the immortality of the soul, and THIS book is the real origin of the modern belief in the immortality of the soul. [To be continued...] |

10 | What could I possiblt do that's greater? | John 14:12 | goodnewsminister | 85980
The 'greater works' that we shall do, works that Jesus could not do while He was here with us in the flesh is to be 'ministers of the reconciliation', i.e., we'll lead people to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom of God and 'teaching them ALL things whatsoever I have commanded you and, lo, I am with you til the end of the age'...Yes, while He was in the flesh the ransom had NOT been paid, now that it has been paid we have all become "MINISTERS OF THE GOOD NEWS", Yes, proclaiming the GOOD NEWS that the DEAD ARE INDEED DEAD and that NOT one person will be 'left behind', and that no one is burning in some 'hellfire' and that you should become a Christian because you LOVE HIM because HE FIRSTED LOVED YOU...and NOT because you're afraid of some 'eternal torment' or 'damnation.' Yes, the Call of the Christian is to become co-rulers with Christ in His coming Kingdom and to build the necessary character NOW, during this day of salvation for the Church, and then to rule with Him once we've proven faithful 'unto death'. 2 Corinthians 3:6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant–not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. |

Matt, If you need help, let me know, I am available to help you find the Scriptures for these, but I am sure you should be able to 'give an answer of the hope that is within you with fear and trembling' as we're commanded to 'always be READY' to give such an answer...just let me know. 1 Peter 3 14But even in case you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, [you are] blessed (happy, to be envied). Do not dread or be afraid of their threats, nor be disturbed [by their opposition]. 15But in your hearts set Christ apart as holy [and acknowledge Him] as Lord. Always be ready to give a LOGICAL defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully.(1) 16[And see to it that] your conscience is entirely clear ([1] unimpaired), so that, when you are falsely accused as evildoers, those who threaten you abusively and revile your right behavior in Christ may come to be ashamed [of slandering your good lives]. Be ready to give a LOGICAL reason, as God invites us to us our human REASONING when discussing Him, as Isaiah 1:18 tells us, "Come NOW and let us REASON together..." Isaiah 1 18Come now, and let us reason together, says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be like wool. Your brother in the HOPE of the Resurrection, Goodnewsminister Formerly an Independent Fundamentalist Hell-Fire Damnationist preacher and an ordained Missionary Baptist preacher, who left ALL of that life, including the secure wages and the free housing to serve the True and Living God and to proclaim His love and the love of His Son to all who have a 'hearing ear' to hear 'what the Spirit saith unto the churches.' |

12 | Biblical support for your statements | Bible general Archive 1 | goodnewsminister | 85501
Dear Prazn, I appreciate your thoughts. However, in order to understand the true meaning of the Scriptures, we must of a necessity know the historical aspects to the Scripture which we hold in our hands. I'll admit that my views are RADICALLY different than most on this board are, but that's okay. We all have LIBERTY in Christ Jesus to agree to disagree, agreeably. I do not believe in the doctrine of the Trinity, nor do I believe in the immortality of the human soul or the eternal torment of the wicked. What I do believe in is the Gospel of the Kingdom, which Jesus and the Apostles taught! The world is NOT condemned any more than we are, as the WRATH of God upon us all is the death penalty, for the 'wages of sin is DEATH' Romans 6:23 plainly states, not eternal LIFE in torments, but DEATH the opposite of life. However, the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord! My heart PRAISES HIM each day for His marvelous LOVE that is boundless, His Wisdom that is wiser than us all, His power that is matchless and His Justice that WILL NOT exact a more stiffer penalty for sin than what is deserved. If Eternal Torment in Hell fire were the penalty for sin, then Jesus would still be roasting in flames and thus He would be for all eternity, as HE TOOK OUR PLACE IN DEATH, in Hades, the Bible grave. By believing in the Devil's lie that death is but a door to the next life, you open yourself up to all kinds of error and bondage to the 'god of this world who hath blinded the minds of them which believe NOT' the True Gospel of the Kingdom. Eternal Torment—Not Sin’s Penalty. Question (1977)—How do we know that the penalty of sin is not eternal torment? Answer.—The Bible plainly states that the penalty of sin is death (Rom. 6: 23). Consider well the fact that our Lord Jesus took the place of sinners under the first (Adam’s) condemnation for sin (Rom. 5: 12, 15-19). Had the penalty for sin been everlasting torment, He, in paying our penalty, would have been compelled to suffer whatever the sinners were condemned to suffer as sin’s penalty. It is written (Isa. 53: 6) that Jehovah “hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Jesus bore our sins in His own body on the tree (1 Pet. 2: 24). He died, “the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God” (1 Pet. 3: 18). Jesus “gave himself a ransom [a corresponding price] for all, to be testified in due time” (1 Tim. 2: 6)—for we were all in Adam’s loins when he sinned and brought upon himself and his race the death penalty (Gen. 2: 17; 3: 19; Rom. 6: 23; Ezek. 18: 4, 20). One perfect human life was thus lost and one perfect human life was laid down as a ransom, or corresponding price; for “the Word was made flesh” (John 1: 14) and Jesus said (John 6: 51): “The bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” Thus in providing the ransom-price, the corresponding price, for Adam and the race that was in his loins when he sinned, Jesus, in paying the debt for sin, tasted death for every man (Heb. 2: 9). He “died for our sins” (1 Cor. 15: 3)—note carefully, He does not suffer everlasting torment for our sins. Hence if there were no other evidence on the subject, this alone would be sufficient to prove that “the wages of sin is death” and not everlasting torment. Those who like to think that the wages of sin is eternal life in torment (always for others, of course, but never for themselves!) will have a hard time explaining how they can themselves possibly escape such a fate, seeing that such a debt as the wages of sin has never been paid on their behalf! If the wages of sin is eternal life in torment, then Adam and all his race must suffer eternal torment, for Jesus never paid such a debt on our behalf! Furthermore, it is hard to understand how Christian people who claim to be civilized to such an extent that they would not tolerate parents roasting their children in an oven, or roasting or otherwise practicing cruelty to dumb animals, and who claim to have too much love in their own hearts to torture their own children in fire, no matter what the children would do, can truly worship, reverence and love a God who they claim is not even up to their own standards of civilization and love and compassion, and who they claim will eternally torture and torment the great bulk of His human creatures. ’77-87 |

13 | What do you believe? | Bible general Archive 1 | goodnewsminister | 85492
See Rev 20:12-15. According to God's Word, man is an immortal being. Where he spends eternity is up to him. The Apostle Paul expressed what all Christians hope(this is not wishful thinking, but CONFIDENT EXPECTATION) "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." (Please read 2 Cor 5:1-8) Did the Apostle Paul Expect to Go to Heaven? "For I am hard pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you" (Philippians 1:23-24). Is Paul saying in these verses that he wants to depart from earth and be with Christ in heaven? What did he mean when he expressed his desire to be with Christ? Before focusing on what this scripture says, let's notice what it does not say. It does not say when or where Paul would be with Christ if he departed. Nor is there any reference to heaven in these verses. To conclude otherwise is to read assumptions into Paul's words. When writing to the Philippians, Paul was struggling with two desires. He wanted to depart this life and be with Christ, but he also wanted to remain with God's people. In his second letter to Timothy he speaks dogmatically; he knows the end of his physical life is near, and he is ready to depart: "For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing" (2Timothy 4:6-8). Here we learn what Paul means by being "with Christ." He understood that he was not to receive his reward immediately at death. Instead, there was laid up for him a crown of righteousness that he would be given "on that Day" of Christ's appearing, at Jesus' second coming. As Paul noted, Jesus will bring Paul's reward with Him. Paul will receive it at that time, not before, along with all others who will be resurrected at Christ's return. "Behold, the Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand, and His arm shall rule for Him; behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him" (Isaiah 40:10; see also Revelation 22:12). Paul explained to the Corinthians: "Behold I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed-in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed" (1 Corinthians 15:51-52). Paul knew he would receive his reward at Christ's coming: "For we all must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad" (2 Corinthians 5:10). The time from Paul's death until his resurrection will seem to him but a mere moment. He will be with Christ and will be a glorified son of God in the next moment of his consciousness. No wonder Paul, weary of his sufferings in this life, desired to depart and be with Christ. Jesus also assured that where He is, there we (Christ followers) will be also. (John 14:1-6) And since He'll rule here on the Earth, so shall we be with Him! What do you believe will happen to you when your body dies? Precisely what the Bible says will happen, namely, 'dust thou ART, and to dust thou shalt RETURN', you were nonexistence once, and you'll return to that state at death. Were it not for Christ being the FIRSTFRUITS of them that slept, we would have NO HOPE of a future anywhere! Genesis 2 7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Dust of the ground plus breath of life equals LIVING SOUL LIVING SOUL minus BREATH OF LIFE equals DUST OF GROUND or a dead corspe. BREATH OF LIFE minus DUST OF GROUND equals A DEAD CORSPE. Accept God's Truth that we do indeed DIE, and stop being mislead by the devil's FIRST LIE TO EVE, namely, THOU SHALT NOT SURELY DIE. |

14 | is december 25th the day christ was born | Gal 4:4 | goodnewsminister | 85429
Our Lord was born in October or late September 2 B.C. or B.C.E., not on December 25th... Thus, it is again proven that Jesus' birth was about one year and three months before our common era, A.D. 1; for, his ministry ending when he was thirty-three and a half years old, April 3rd, A.D. 33, the date of his birth may be readily found by measuring backward to a date thirty-three and a half years prior to April 3rd, A.D. 33. Thirty-two years and three months before April A.D. 33 would be January 3rd, A.D. 1, and one year and three months further back would bring us to October 3rd, B.C. 2, as the date of our Lord's birth at Bethlehem. The difference between lunar time, used by the Jews, and solar time, now in common use, would be a few days, so that we could not be certain that the exact day might not be in September about the 27th, but October 1st, B.C. 2, is about correct. Nine months back of that date would bring us to about Christmas time, B.C. 3, as the date at which our Lord laid aside the glory which he had with the Father before the world was [made] and the taking of or changing to human nature began. It seems probable that this was the origin of the celebration of December 25th as Christmas Day. Some writers on Church history claim, even, that Christmas Day was originally celebrated as the date of the annunciation by Gabriel to the virgin Mary. (Luke 1:26) Certain it is that a midwinter date does not well agree with the declaration of Scripture, that at the time of our Lord's birth the shepherds were in the fields with their flocks. |

In my opinion of the subject, yes, many of them are. They are NOT standing up for righteousness and Truth, but for heresy and disallusionment of all of God's people! They are not proclaiming the Good News, rather they proclaim another gospel, which neither Jesus nor the Apostles taught and thus mislead people. However, you're walk with God is yours and I make no judgement on which church you wish to attend, as my wife and son and I attend none of them, we choose to obey the declaration of Revelation 18:4, that is to,"Come out of her MY PEOPLE...and be NOT partakers of her sins!"
16 | In John 3:16 what does begotten mean? | Gal 4:4 | goodnewsminister | 85413
Matthew 16:13-16 The description “son of God” is not used exclusively of Jesus in Scripture. Luke’s genealogy calls Adam “the son of God” (Luke 3:38). Genesis 6:2 associates “the sons of God” with angels entrusted with mankind’s welfare prior to their illicit conjugation with women. Angels are also referred to as “the sons of God” (Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7). God calls his regathered people Israel his sons and daughters in Isaiah 43:3-7. “We have one Father, God,” cried the Jewish audience in John 8:41 in response to Jesus’ accusations. Prospective members of the church, “those who receive him (Jesus),” are called “sons of God” (see John 1:12; Romans 8:14,19; Philippians 2:15; 1 John 3:1,2). Is there a difference in the term applied to Jesus? Yes, there is. Not Adam, not the angels, not the nation of Israel, and not even the prospective church can claim the special relationship Jesus has with our heavenly Father. Jesus alone is the “beginning of the creation of God” (Revelation 3:14), and he alone reflects the characteristics of God to such an extent that knowing him was tantamount to personally knowing God (John 10:30). Nowhere is this special relationship better expressed than in what may arguably be the most widely quoted verse in the Bible: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten (Greek: monogenes) son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Strong’s Concordance defines monogenes (#3439) as “only-born, i.e., sole; or only (begotten child).” It says the word is a compound word made up of mono, meaning sole or single, and ginomai, meaning to cause to be, or to cause to become. Liddell and Scott’s Lexicon suggests the primary meaning of the word monogenes as “only member of a kin or kind.” It gives a secondary definition as “unique.” Kittel’s Theological dictionary adds that the term monogenes implies not just “only begotten” but also conveys a special relationship. The New International Version of the Bible translates monogenes not as “only begotten” but as “one and only (Son).” This is an attempt to emphasize the unique relationship suggested by Liddell and Scott. However, this translation does not differentiate enough between Jesus and others mentioned as sons of God. If we understand the term “only begotten son” properly, we will understand the insight Peter was granted. When he responded to Jesus’ question in our theme text, Jesus told him: “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 16:17). |
