1 | Subordinate? | 2 Thess 2:15 | Robin Hass | 170912
The Word of God in the fullest sense in Jesus, God the Son. The Bible is God's written Word. The Bible is not my God. Nor is the Bible part of the Trinity; it is the Church's infallible book about God. It is subordinate, perhaps not a great word choice: i) In it's true interpretation by the Church for individual men. ii) The Church's birthday was the Day of Pentecost, no book of the NT had even been written. The Church was led infallibly by the Holy Spirit to later define the Biblical canon. |

2 | Scripture does teach. | 2 Thess 2:15 | Robin Hass | 170911
I'm repeating myself now. 2 Pet 3:16 asserts 'as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand...'which is completely the opposite of what you assert! Acts 8:30 Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. The practical proof that Scripture is not perspicuous is the diversity of evangelical sects and their many conflicting opinions. In what way do you interpret 2 Peter 1:20, this verse states there is only one true interpretation for any Biblical verse, namely the official one taught by the Church: The Church of the living God, which 'the pillar and support of the truth' (1 Tim 3:15). Scripture does not say the 'Bible is pillar and support of the truth.' |

3 | Homosexual debate at school help please | 2 Cor 4:4 | Robin Hass | 168328
I am never particularly impressed when godless people condemn homosexuality which usually comes from a root of hate. I've visited ex-concentration camps in Germany and I don't believe the world's hatred of homosexuals comes from God. They just hate them because they're different and for the same reasons all godless people are divided and alienated from each other and God. Love the sinner, hate the sin is the Christian message. It matters not whether the godless hate homosexuality in their unregenerate state. It's a false commonality. |

6 | Can a Divorced couple Remarry Each other | Acts 20:28 | Robin Hass | 165851
Dear Ann, Your friend was never married to the girl in question. This is because the marriage ceremony needs subsequent validation by consummation (sexual intercourse). His intended bride is and remains a virgin: there was no marriage. If your friend’s marriage to the second girl was valid and duly consummated then in the eyes of God they ACT-ually married. It hardly matters if he held reservations; if he had sexual intercourse with his bride in the privacy of their wedding night it was an act of his will. The resolution of this case is very complex and I question the wisdom of referring this question to a forum mainly for cessationist evangelicals immersed in an American cultural milieu. What could they really know about this. They would have little idea as to the social and familial fabric of Pakistani society and especially arranged marriage. Your friends could easily be murdered in a ‘honour killing’ or at least be disowned by their families if they decide to follow their own preferences. Evangelicals do not consider a valid marriage is absolutely irrevocable unto death, they often divorce when it suits them. Are you seeking their ‘relativist’ permission to throw out any marriages here which aren’t wanted. I can hardly follow the complexities of the many divorces and re-marriages by all the parties cited in your post. It is shambolic: marriage is for life. The first valid (consummated) marriage anyone undertook is valid as long as their spouse lives. The bi-millenial Christian Church has always taught this. I know plenty of evangelicals who divorced because God ‘told them to...’ Within which Christian tradition have these events occurred, some Eastern rite perhaps? What do their Christian leaders say? Are they rebelling against their counsel? It is these Christian leaders who are answerable before God for how they shepherd their flock. I led a young man to the Lord from such an Asian society; because of the trouble this caused with his family this man is dead. If Pakistani family headship and associated cultural traditions are ignored when seeking a resolution for this conundrum, make no mistake the couple risk serious personal harm and at best will end up fleeing Pakistan to save their lives. |

7 | Coffee and Cigarettes a sin ? | 1 Cor 3:17 | Robin Hass | 158446
Smoking tobacco is a sin, every doctor tells us to give it up because it is a killer. Tobacco contains 4,000 dangerous chemicals and is a leading cause of heart disease, lung cancer, leg amputations and more. The tobacco companies have waged a war of misinformation against the American public and covered up the truth about how harmful smoking really is. Coffee drinking is not a sin; I have never heard drinking coffee is a problem except from Adventists who would have you believe: "The Christian is surrounded with seductive invitations to use drugs. Even many innocent-appearing, popular beverages contain drugs: Coffee, tea, and colas contain caffeine...Research has shown that these milder gateway drugs tend to lead progressively to stronger mind-altering drugs." How pathetic, I've been drinking coffee for 30 years and I've never progressed onto heroin, crack cocaine or LSD, amazing isn't it, I must be one of the lucky ones. Recent medical extracts have increasingly claimed coffee is full of antioxidants and is neuroprotective. Coffee drinking taken to excess is probably harmful but what isn't. Moderation is the key never gluttony. The best way to consume coffee is to invite a non-Christian to go for a cup with you and tell him about the saving gospel of Jesus Christ. Tell him about the true freedom that can only be found in Christ, and how our faith isn't about silly religious strictures. |

8 | natural disasters | Mark 13:8 | Robin Hass | 158235
You are citing Matt 24 and Mark 13, these passages do indeed state 'that just before the second coming there will be an increase of wars and natural disasters'; there is no such parallel passage in Revelation although of course God unleashes wars, famines and other manifestations of His wrath in the Tribulation period. Do not make the error of 'chasing after the wind', recognising in contemporary events, such as the recent storms and the Iraq war, the ushering in of the end of the world. There has been a lot of bad weather and wars over the last two thousands years, so it's best to keep our feet on the ground. The time is near and has been for quite a while! We have been in the 'last days' since the First Coming (Heb 1:2) Do not follow the false "Bible prophecy teachers" and their errors. The world could be around for centuries more, but for us who are alive, we are called to live as if "the time is at hand" (Rev 1:3) as it has been since the Ascension. Eternity for mortals is always a single breath and a single heartbeat away. |

10 | Sex before marriage and lesbian passages | 1 Cor 6:16 | Robin Hass | 157940
Dear Ben Sex outside marriage is specifically referred to in Scripture as ‘fornication.’ Here are a few examples: (Mat 15:19) "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. (Mar 7:21) "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, (Act 15:20) but that we write to them that they abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood. (Act 15:29) that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. Farewell." (Act 21:25) "But concerning the Gentiles who have believed, we wrote, having decided that they should abstain from meat sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled and from fornication." (1Co 6:9) Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, (Heb 13:4) Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Sex outside marriage is wrong because when a man and women have intercourse they are joined together, not only on the physical level, but also spiritually. 1 Cor 6:16 warns that anyone united in sexual intercourse with a woman becomes one with her, whether she is your wife, a drunken female student, or a prostitute: ‘for it is said, "The two will become one flesh.’ God has designed this level of spiritual and physical binding together, for you and your future wife only. You do not want to be united in the spiritual realm with strangers; it will lead to great pain and sexual diseases. Sex outside marriage with immoral women often leads to pregnancy and to the women procuring abortions. Aborting unborn children is murder. Women who have abortions suffer from a lifetime of guilt and suicide is sometimes the result. No good consequences can come out of such grave sins. God calls you to a chaste life. Chastity means abstinence before marriage and sex with your spouse alone when you are married. You will not find the word ‘Lesbian’ is in scripture, but the practice is clearly condemned. Romans 1:26 states, ‘God gave them over to degrading passions. Even their females exchanged their natural sexual function for one that is unnatural.’ This is surely referring to female homosexuality and other perversions. (No one here will criticize you for poor spelling or grammar, but in the computer age why not write your post in Microsoft Word as I do; it has an inbuilt Spelling/Grammar function.) Robin |

11 | Against gays, plse supply sup scripture | 1 Cor 6:9 | Robin Hass | 157929
Hello Etricia Christians are not 'against gays' anymore than they are ‘against sinners.’ Christians are called to love gays. Jesus loves gay people. Groups such as neo-Nazi’s and bigots are ‘against gays’. I have visited Nazi concentration camps in Europe (which are now museums) where gay people were murdered and turned to ash along with Jews. Christians hate sin and love sinners, because sinners are people of infinite worth made in the image of God. The difference between hating the sin not the sinner is the difference between light and darkness: it is infinite. In today’s world where people are generally “benevolent humanists” (especially here in England) homosexuality is virtually accepted and people who are against same sex relationships are considered to be unloving and bigots, comparable with racists. This view has infiltrated, and indeed divided, the mainline liberal Protestant Churches who often argue that the Church needs to learn from the world, and to be against homosexual love fails to show Christ’s love. I often find myself arguing against homosexuality; it is like a ‘touchstone’ dividing conservative (orthodox) from liberal (unorthodox) Christians. All Christians who place God's Word above contemporary culture condemn homosexuality. However, whilst homosexuality is a very serious sin it is no worse than many other sins; all sins are worthy of death. Homosexuality is certainly no worse than heterosexual adultery. I can be smug that I am not a homosexual but Jesus said if I look at a woman with lust for her I have already committed adultery with her in my heart…and in danger of my whole body being thrown into hell (Matt 5:28-9) The “wisdom of the world” believes we have evolved from slime into monkeys. When people believe they are animals they have a belief system which allows them to act accordingly. Everyone does what is right in his own eyes! However reality is not so simple, every fallen sinner possesses to some degree the ‘image of God’ and people have an inherent intuition concerning homosexuality as they do about bestiality—that it is wrong because it is unnatural. It feels wrong, homosexuals feels guilt about their acts, unfortunately this makes them more and more vocal in promoting homosexuality, they reason that they hate what they do because a bigoted society has made them feel that way. Anyone who believes the creation accounts in Genesis should easily be able to see that homosexual sex is a perversion and a misuse of the human body. In Genesis 1, God made a man and a woman for each other, he made them perfectly and biologically compatible for each other, and he made them with the powers of procreation. Homosexuality is unnatural and any sane person who acknowledges we are the product of our Creator knows this is so. ‘The rejection of homosexual behavior that is found in the Old Testament is well known. In Genesis 19, two angels in disguise visit the city of Sodom and are offered hospitality and shelter by Lot. During the night, the men of Sodom demand that Lot hand over his guests for homosexual intercourse. Lot refuses, and the angels blind the men of Sodom. Lot and his household escape, and the town is destroyed by fire "because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord" (Gen. 19:13). Jude 7 records that Sodom and Gomorrah "acted immorally and indulged in unnatural lust." Lot even offered his two virgin daughters in place of his guests, but the men of Sodom rejected the offer, preferring homosexual sex over heterosexual sex (Gen. 19:8–9). An explicit condemnation is found in the book of Leviticus: "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. . . . If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them" (Lev. 18:22, 20:13). The New Testament forcefully rejects homosexual behavior. Romans 1, attributes the homosexual desires of some to a refusal to acknowledge and worship God. He says, "For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a base mind and to improper conduct. . . . Though they know God’s decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them but approve those who practice them" (Rom. 1:26–28, 32). Paul also wrote, "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Cor. 6:9–10).’ |

12 | WHAT DOES IT SAY ABOUT JESUS AND GOD? | Phil 2:5 | Robin Hass | 157778
Dear Selam, (Can I respectfully point out that convention assumes that writing in block capitals denotes anger and shouting – I am sure you just don’t know this). What do you want to know about the passage Philippians 2:5-8? You simply write you want ‘to know about’ it. Please be more specific. For now, here is an exposition on the passage by the very respected John Wesley: Phi 2:6 - Who being in the essential form - The incommunicable nature. Of God - From eternity, as he was afterward in the form of man; real God, as real man. Counted it no act of robbery - That is the precise meaning of the words, - no invasion of another's prerogative, but his own strict and unquestionable right. To be equal with God - the word here translated equal, occurs in the adjective form five or six times in the New Testament, Mat_20:12; Luk_6:34; Joh_5:18; Act_11:17; Re_21:16. In all which places it expresses not a bare resemblance, but a real and proper equality. It here implies both the fulness and the supreme height of the Godhead; to which are opposed, he emptied and he humbled himself. Ver.7 - Yet - He was so far from tenaciously insisting upon, that he willingly relinquished, his claim. He was content to forego the glories of the Creator, and to appear in the form of a creature; nay, to he made in the likeness of the fallen creatures; and not only to share the disgrace, but to suffer the punishment, due to the meanest and vilest among them all. He emptied himself - Of that divine fulness, which he received again at his exaltation. Though he remained full, Joh_1:14, yet he appeared as if he had been empty; for he veiled his fulness from the sight of men and angels. Yea, he not only veiled, but, in some sense, renounced, the glory which he had before the world began. Taking - And by that very act emptying himself. The form of a servant - The form, the likeness, the fashion, though not exactly the same, are yet nearly related to each other. The form expresses something absolute; the likeness refers to other things of the same kind; the fashion respects what appears to sight and sense. Being made in the likeness of men - A real man, like other men. Hereby he took the form of a servant. Ver.8 - And being found in fashion as a man - A common man, without any peculiar excellence or comeliness. He humbled himself - To a still greater depth. Becoming obedient - To God, though equal with him. Even unto death - The greatest instance both of humiliation and obedience. Yea, the death of the cross - Inflicted on few but servants or slaves. 13 | DOES IT SAY JESUS IS GOD OR god? | Heb 1:8 | Robin Hass | 157776
Hello SELAM, I presume you belong to a group that denies the divinity of Christ, perhaps you are a Muslim, a Jehovah’s Witness or such like. If you write a short profile we would be able to answer your questions more accurately. Do you claim the scriptures are infallible and inspired as a JW would, corrupted as a Muslim would, or not to be taken literally as a ‘liberal’ Unitarian would? Where are you coming from? You already have your ideas why Jesus is not God. If you would consider yourself a scholar I challenge to you to be able to present both sides of the argument. If you learn to present the “hypothetical” case for Christ’s divinity, as well as you present you own case, you prove that you truly understand the issues. All academic thinkers can do this for their opponent’s positions. The only way to do this properly is to become well-read, read all the arguments of the various sides and do not accept ‘straw-man’ presentations of the Christian position by our opponents! Here are some assorted arguments: “Christ’s divinity is shown over and over again in the New Testament. For example, in John 5:18 we are told that Jesus’ opponents sought to kill him because he "called God his Father, making himself equal with God." In John 8:58, when quizzed about how he has special knowledge of Abraham, Jesus replies, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I Am"—invoking and applying to himself the personal name of God—"I Am" (Ex. 3:14). His audience understood exactly what he was claiming about himself. "So they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple" (John 8:59). In John 20:28, Thomas falls at Jesus’ feet, exclaiming, "My Lord and my God!" (Greek: Ho Kurios mou kai ho Theos mou—literally, "The Lord of me and the God of me!") In Philippians 2:6, Paul tells us that Christ Jesus "[w]ho, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped" (New International Version). So Jesus chose to be born in humble, human form though he could have simply remained in equal glory with the Father for he was "in very nature God." Also significant are passages that apply the title "the First and the Last" to Jesus. This is one of the Old Testament titles of Yahweh: "Thus says Yahweh, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, Yahweh of armies: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; besides me there is no god’" (Is. 44:6; cf. 41:4, 48:12). This title is directly applied to Jesus three times in the book of Revelation: "When I saw him [Christ], I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand upon me, saying, ‘Fear not, I am the First and the Last’" (Rev. 1:17). "And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the First and the Last, who died and came to life’" (Rev. 2:8). "Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense, to repay every one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the beginning and the end" (Rev. 22:12–13). This last quote is especially significant since it applies to Jesus the parallel title "the Alpha and the Omega," which Revelation earlier applied to the Lord God: "‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty" (Rev. 1:8).” |
