1 | Is hetero-anal sex a sin? | 2 Tim 2:20 | PasserBy | 132027
Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. Then each of you will control your body and live in holiness and honor-- not in lustful passion as the pagans do, in their ignorance of God and his ways. God let them go ahead and do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other's bodies. Instead of believing what they knew was the truth about God, they deliberately chose to believe lies. So they worshiped the things God made but not the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever. Amen. That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relationships with women …, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men and, as a result, suffered within themselves the penalty they so richly deserved. When they refused to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their evil minds and let them do things that should never be done. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, rebuke and expose them. It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. If you keep yourself pure, you will be a utensil God can use for his purpose. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work. Run from anything that stimulates youthful lust. Follow anything that makes you want to do right. Pursue faith and love and peace, and enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. You husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat her with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God's gift of new life. If you don't treat her as you should, your prayers will not be heard. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. Anyone who is willing to hear should listen to the Spirit and understand what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Everyone who is victorious will eat from the tree of life in the paradise of God. |

2 | Just what is the purpose of baptism? | Heb 11:7 | PasserBy | 129909
Having not seen the “the recent posts on this subject for the past couple of weeks”, this writer does not know if this comment contributes to them. The idea of baptism being a part of some sort of gradual process of salvation is not familiar to this passerby. It seems that baptism is similar to salvation in some ways, in that it is done and over with. In that way water baptism is like spiritual baptism, which happens at the moment of salvation. If there has been a discussion, I suppose these points have already been made. But one must agree with the concluding comment from Angel, that baptism is an act of obedience. Baptism is indeed an act of obedience, and it fulfills several functions. It is a demonstration of our repentance toward God and our readiness to follow Christ (1 Peter 3:21). It is a show of our identification with Christ in his death and burial and resurrection (Romans 6:4). It is a means of displaying publicly what has happened privately when we were immersed into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). It shows our willingness to follow Christ’s example personally (Matthew 3:15) and to be a part of the church which corporately follows his commands (Matthew 28:19). |

3 | One universal religion | Acts 4:12 | PasserBy | 129898
It seems appropriate that the question be asked of the pastor himself. It is difficult to know what he meant unless we know the context of his statement. He could have been talking about denominations or about the ecumenical movement. He should have given a scripture reference for his statement. If he forgot to do so, it would be good to ask him. He would probably agree that God wants everyone to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4) and since there in no other name by which they can be saved except the name of Jesus (Acts 4:12) that would mean that God wants all men to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. There is salvation in none other. Jesus is the way, the only way, to God (John 14:6). Since God wants all men to come to him, he would want them all to come through Jesus. |

4 | Burnt to death with fire. All-loving? | Luke 9:54 | PasserBy | 126580
I am not sure where the term "all-loving" comes from. God is love (1 John 4:8,16). But God is also "a consuming fire" (Deuteronomy 4:24; 9:3; Hebrews 12:29). God has other qualities in addition to love. These qualities include justice and holiness. All in all, God is a good God and he will not allow sin to permeate his realm. From time to time he arises to punish sin. Also, because he is Sovereign, he will do these things that are right whether or not we understand or agree with him. We should understand that this God of love loved us so much that he allowed the full force of his justice against sin to be meted out on his son. That is what happened at Calvary and it was because he loved us and wanted to take away our sin. Hs love and his justice are both seen in the cross of Christ. So now, since Christ has borne the penalty for our sin, God can show love and forgiveness toward us. We should understand that God does not want to punish us. But he does not want us to sin either. If we sin, there must be punishment for sin. God’s justice must be satisfied. You have seen the severity of God. He did send down fire. I trust you can also see the goodness of God. His disciples watched once when a city declined to receive Jesus. When his disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?” But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them”. God has a fire prepared for those who reject him. And it is worse than the fire that fell on those soldiers in the book of 2 Kings. It is a fire that will not stop and the people in it will not die. But the God of justice is also a God of love. He sent Jesus to save us from hell. We can go to heaven if we will accept his salvation. That is love. God does that because he is a God of love. |

5 | Bible reference for hypnotism | Rom 6:16 | PasserBy | 125424
This writer knows of no passage of scripture dealing directly with the subject of hypnotism. But there are related passages dealing with related issues. It is good, first of all to consider how it is that anyone can be hypnotized. “If you ever wondered whether or not you could be hypnotized please read the following paragraph. “Take a deep breath...close your eyes...get comfortable. Can you follow simple instructions such as these? THEN YOU CAN BE HYPNOTIZED”. The words are those of Dr. Kenneth Grossman, hypnotherapist. Or perhaps one should say that he endorsed the message. They are a part of an ad for his program. The lure of the program is that “you can use hypnosis to help yourself accomplish your goals and live your dreams”. And it is a red flag for believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. Our scriptures teach us something else, that our accomplishments are through Christ (John 15:5; Philippians 4:13). Likewise, a Christian is asked to surrender his will to God (Romans 12:1; 1 Corinthians 6:20;2 Corinthians 5:14,15, etc.). In so doing he would be following the example of Jesus (John 6:38;Luke 22:42) and of Paul (Galatians 2:20; Philippians 1:21) In hypnotism, the client surrenders his will to the therapist. They will tell you that “one of the first conditions … of all successful hypnotism, that the (client) surrenders up his will to the (therapist) who, of course, guarantees to return it to him at the close of the (session)”. To answer the question directly, a Christian can be hypnotized, for although he is a servant of Christ, he still has the freedom (ability) to yield to anyone (Romans 6:16). The answer to the question not asked, whether he should do it, can be deduced from the discussion above. |

6 | "What things?" | Luke 24:19 | PasserBy | 125248
Ye participants and visitors at StudyBibleForum, I perceive that in all things ye are very studious, and more than that, meticulous in your studies. For as I passed by, and beheld your discussions, I found a thread with this inscription, “What things?” The questioner suggests that the Lord, in thus replying to a question with a question, supports their assumption that He is a stranger and that such a response was, while not a falsehood, liable to be construed as misleading. It is to be hoped that this careful analysis of the method used by our Lord Jesus Christ does not cast any doubt on his perfection, and does not cause us to miss any of the facts or the beauty in his message. His question had come after they had told of “things” that had recently happened. And he said unto them, “What things?” And they said unto him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: “And beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not”. Then he said unto them, “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?” O friends, ought not Christ to have asked this question, to encourage them to search their hearts, to see where they were in their faith, so he could gently rebuke them and encourage them, and lead them to deeper faith, based on a more complete revelation? |
