Bible Question:
Can a Christian be hypnotized? Is there any scripture reference about hypnotism? God Bless |
Bible Answer: This writer knows of no passage of scripture dealing directly with the subject of hypnotism. But there are related passages dealing with related issues. It is good, first of all to consider how it is that anyone can be hypnotized. “If you ever wondered whether or not you could be hypnotized please read the following paragraph. “Take a deep breath...close your eyes...get comfortable. Can you follow simple instructions such as these? THEN YOU CAN BE HYPNOTIZED”. The words are those of Dr. Kenneth Grossman, hypnotherapist. Or perhaps one should say that he endorsed the message. They are a part of an ad for his program. The lure of the program is that “you can use hypnosis to help yourself accomplish your goals and live your dreams”. And it is a red flag for believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. Our scriptures teach us something else, that our accomplishments are through Christ (John 15:5; Philippians 4:13). Likewise, a Christian is asked to surrender his will to God (Romans 12:1; 1 Corinthians 6:20;2 Corinthians 5:14,15, etc.). In so doing he would be following the example of Jesus (John 6:38;Luke 22:42) and of Paul (Galatians 2:20; Philippians 1:21) In hypnotism, the client surrenders his will to the therapist. They will tell you that “one of the first conditions … of all successful hypnotism, that the (client) surrenders up his will to the (therapist) who, of course, guarantees to return it to him at the close of the (session)”. To answer the question directly, a Christian can be hypnotized, for although he is a servant of Christ, he still has the freedom (ability) to yield to anyone (Romans 6:16). The answer to the question not asked, whether he should do it, can be deduced from the discussion above. |
