2 | Ladies, do I owe you an apology? | 1 Cor 14:34 | LisaMarie | 25876
Dear Charis, I got curious as to what you might be told to apologize for. I've read parts this thread. I haven't been insulted by anything anyone has said. Especially the gentlemen I'm familiar with who are responding within this thread. Let me tell you what I feel - Much of the feminist movement that started way back when has done nothing but make women extremely unhappy. I'm in the heart of computerland. The Silicon Valley. Women don't cook, don't clean and and don't nurture their families. (That is to say, leave their children in day care.) And they're proud of this! However, they still expect men to pick up the check and open doors for them. See where I'm going with this? They're all on a downward spiral into misery. I love the traditional role of women. I LOVE to cook, I LOVE to clean. Nurturing is a specialty. Yes, I'm a bible toting wierdo. But along with all those ladies with their calvin klein suits, suv's and painted nails, who is the happy one? ME! You know how it's not good to give your dog a chicken bone? No matter how bad he wants it? Some days I feel all this girl power stuff is our chicken bone. Don't get me wrong. I'm strong and independent. But so much these days teaches us Me Me Me - I'm not happy in my marriage so I'm leaving. I'm not happy in my job so I'm leaving. What ever happened to the joy of a good days work? I miss the days when we wore our Sunday best, complete with hats and gloves. Oh how I long for the days when folks didn't insist on "idle chit chat." Why is it so many people are uncomfortable with silence? Be well friend Charis, Lisa |

3 | how can I eat flesh | Gen 9:4 | LisaMarie | 25356
Tony is it? Hello Tony, I might be able to help. Being a vegetarian, I would LOVE to tell you the Bible is saying don't eat meat, but that would be an out and out lie. I can't offer up biblical support. Only hunters terms. When one kills an animal for consumption, it is eviscerated. That's to say it is drained of it's blood and cleaned of all it's organs. It's along the lines of being civilized. At the time of Genesis, people were still uncivilized. Just killing something and ripping it apart for consuption! The Lord wished for us to have restraint, grace, proper control of ourselves. What have you. While it's true that body tissue retains a small amount fluid after it's been cleaned, the Lord is not instructing His people to be vegetarian. If He was, He wouldn't give later instruction as to which animals were proper eating as He does in Leviticus, chapter 11 and Deuteronomy, chapter 14. I don't know about you, but I was outright insulted when PETA launched their "leave a lasting impression" campaign. Be well, Lisa |

4 | Is the image in 1Sam. 28 really Samuel? | 1 Samuel | LisaMarie | 24750
Samuel wasn't raised from the dead. His spirit was conjured - by someone who really didn't expect him to show up, or she wouldn't have been so frightened! ------ 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!" 13 The king said to her, "Don't be afraid. What do you see?" The woman said, "I see a spirit coming up out of the ground." 14 "What does he look like?" he asked. "An old man wearing a robe is coming up," she said. Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. 15 Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" "I am in great distress," Saul said. "The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do." 16 Samuel said, "Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy? 17 The LORD has done what he predicted through me. The LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors--to David. 18 Because you did not obey the LORD or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the LORD has done this to you today." -------- We know it's really Samuel by the advice he gives. 'You turned away from God, so He turned away from you. - JUST LIKE I TOLD YOU!' If it had been an evil spirit, he probably would have said something like - Oh you're just being silly. God hasn't turned away from you. Keep on doing what you're doing (sinning) God will help you win tomorrow. There is an excellent chapter on this very verse in "Really Bad Girls of the Bible." |

5 | Empty inside being a Roman Catholic? | James 2:17 | LisaMarie | 24748
You poor angel! I have to agree with what everyone says here. If he's not practising (catholic or not), then he doesn't have God in his life. That's why he feels empty. A true lack of the Lord in his life. How sad! I pray often and read the from the Bible daily! Can you encourage him to do so? The automatic prayer brings peace and comfort, but spontaneous prayer gives so much JOY! Even just to look up at the sky and say HELLO LORD! Take him out to prayer walk the neighborhood. I just LOVE that! I haven't read the books Joe mentioned, but I know (of) the writer. Excellent recommendations! Would you give us his name so we can pray for him? Hugs to you, Lisa |

6 | To those of you talking about Tongues. | 1 Corinthians | LisaMarie | 24493
Acts 10 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." 1 Corinthians 12 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. 1 Corinthians 12 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 1 Corinthians 14 38 If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored. 39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way. Speaking in tongues is a gift from God. A gift of the Spirit. There are some who believe nonsensical babbling is "tongues" but this is not so. When one speaks in tongues it is a language - a real language. (However, you won't know that language.) If it frightens you, then you won't see it as a gift so it wouldn't likely be given. Maybe you'd be given another "charism" such as interpretation, or knowledge. Something you would embrace and give thanks to God for, rather than being fearful of. I used to be fearful of the whole Charismatic Christian movement. Then I attended one of their services. Fantastic! Take care, Lisa |

7 | Who is Jesus? | Matt 24:28 | LisaMarie | 23699
That is entirely unfair, Tim. You can't define a cult based on Christian terms. Many non Christians believe US to be a cult. Yes many cults have charismatic leaders but that is NOT what defines them. Cults are defined by "separatism" and extreme faith. Obsessive beliefs. Separatism meaning they withdraw from the world as a whole. Communal living as a way to protect their fragile and fanatical belief systems from external influence which may poke holes in their faith. Jim Jones founded a cult and he LOVED God. The Hale Bop people were a cult. Separatism, castration and suicide. You can't label people a cult because they don't believe Jesus is Lord. Remember Christians are still being killed today. Martyred for Christ. Not by cults. By governmental fanatic, by religious fanatics and even by each other. Please, just let it go. Lisa |

8 | Exodus 26:1...First mention of cherubim? | Ex 26:1 | LisaMarie | 23590
Based on the oldest drawing I've seen with regards to the Ark of the Covenant, and the angels atop it, they looked a lot like Egyptian hieroglyphs. I'm not really good with Hebrew lore, but, I believe they do have texts with extensive descriptions of angels and their hierarchy. There is a little bit of it sprinkled in the bible. Thrones, Powers, Dominions, Angels, Archangels, Cherubim, Seraphim. Not that I've studied it so if anyone out there might correct my errors?? I believe Michael is both an Archangel and a Seraphim while being the Prince of all the angels or angelic army... I would love to see his cave in Italy! Lisa |

9 | What does revelation say about towers | Revelation | LisaMarie | 23577
Poor lamb. Please pardon my less than sympathetic friends here. I believe this is the passage you're looking for: NIV Isaiah 30:25 In the day of great slaughter, when the towers fall, streams of water will flow on every high mountain and every lofty hill. NASB Isaiah 30:25 On every lofty mountain and on every high hill there will be streams running with water on the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. Hugs sweeting, Lisa PS: as far as terror or terrorism in Revelations, this is all I could find: NIV Revelation 11:11 But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. |

10 | Are the added bits inspired? | Bible general Archive 1 | LisaMarie | 23381
First off, you'd have to be specific as to which bible? New International Version? King James Version, Douay Rheims Version (oldest), American Standard, New American Standard, Gideon's, Young's Literal... the list goes on. I could be wrong but as far as I know the New Jerusalem Bible was the first (some time in the 1960's) to add in text from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Others followed suit. Again, as far as I know, those are also thought inspired. Lisa |

12 | do we have any free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | LisaMarie | 22574
It's just my opinion that - The Lord wants us to pray for sinners. To show mercy as he does. There is a parable about Jesus and the rich man. Jesus told the rich man to give away all his worldly goods and follow him! This is the way to Heaven. When the man couldn't do it, he turned and walked away. "...and Jesus loved him." Because The Lord loves our free will. Loves our humanity. Can we have mercy for someone like John Wayne Gayce or Osuma bin Laden? Can we pray for them to be released from Hell? At the risk of sounding flippant, most days we are busy wishing the person who just cut us off in traffic would 'go to hell.' I read somewhere that since God sent His only Son to redeem us from Hell that to damn someone or to wish them to Hell is the worst slight against God that we can enact. Straight to the heart with that one. |

13 | Is God responsible for evil? | Bible general Archive 1 | LisaMarie | 22570
Have you ever read the Book of Job? Are we responsible if we allow it? God allowed unspeakable sorrow to be dealt out to Job. God knew Job's faith was unbreakable. I went through some really bad things as a child, and for a time I actually thought God forgot me. But a wonderful priest helped me discover how God had strengthened my faith through trials and sorrow. While I was crying over parents who forgot me, I had a Sovereign Lord who never did. |

14 | Bible differences, Christian-Catholic | Bible general Archive 1 | LisaMarie | 22569
It is true. Some bibles contain more "Books" than others. Some bibles have changed the titles of their "Books." Some translations have a seemingly ENTIRE different meaning. The why is beyond my comprehension. Why would any Christian want to leave teachings out? If you figure it out, would you let me know?? ;) |

15 | Why is the Apocrypha not included? | Bible general Archive 1 | LisaMarie | 22566
Some Christians don't feel they are essential teachings. Which is beyond my understanding. The Book of Tobit is one of the BEST! We are introduced to the Archangel Raphael and shown just how angels can interact with man. Leaving us to wonder just how many "people" who have helped us along the road of life may have been angels...
16 | Are new worship songs scripturally OK? | Bible general Archive 1 | LisaMarie | 22559
I count myself lucky in that I attend a parish that's traditional but run by some young and contemporary clergy who really do a number to keep it FRESH! If we contain our vision of The Lord within Scripture we miss out on the grand tapestry he has placed before us. Some very gifted people can write fantastic songs of faith. Even songs not about faith itself can bring us to a deeper relationship with Our Lord. Our pianist, this last Sunday during communion, spontaneously threw out a beautiful song that maybe 5 people in the church were familiar with. Enya, How Can I Keep From Singing. It's a traditional Shaker song. Deeply passionate. My life goes on in endless song above earth's lamentations, I hear the real, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation. Through all the tumult and the strife I hear it's music ringing, It sounds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing? While though the tempest loudly roars, I hear the truth, it liveth. And though the darkness 'round me close, songs in the night it giveth. No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to that rock I'm clinging. Since love is lord of heaven and earth how can I keep from singing? When tyrants tremble in their fear and hear their death knell ringing, when friends rejoice both far and near how can I keep from singing? In prison cell and dungeon vile our thoughts to them are winging, when friends by shame are undefiled how can I keep from singing? My point? It's not the words that harm us. It's what's in our hearts. As for dancing with Jesus, well, call me nutty but I do it ALL the time. Usually in the kitchen waving a towel over my head and some hymn sung WAY off key. ;) Reading books by or about Teresa of Avila may help you to better understand the Fire of God. She didn't count it as judgement but as a gift in that she BURNED with love for The Lord. And St. Teresa's beloved friend Juan de la Cruz or St. John of the Cross who wrote Dark Night of the Soul. Ever read it? http://www.ccel.org/j/john_of_the_cross/dark_night/dark_night.html Loreena McKennitt puts it to music: THE DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL Words by St. John of the Cross and arranged and adapted by Loreena McKennitt Upon a darkened night the flame of love was burning in my breast And by a lantern bright I fled my house while all in quiet rest Shrouded by the night And by the secret stair I quickly fled The veil concealed my eyes while all within lay quiet as the dead CHORUS Oh night thou was my guide of night more loving than the rising sun Oh night that joined the lover to the beloved one transforming each of them into the other Upon that misty night in secrecy, beyond such mortal sight Without a guide or light than that which burned so deeply in my heart That fire t'was led me on and shone more bright than of the midday sun To where he waited still it was a place where no one else could come CHORUS Within my pounding heart which kept itself entirely for him He fell into his sleep beneath the cedars all my love I gave From o'er the fortress walls the wind would his hair against his brow And with its smoothest hand caressed my every sense it would allow CHORUS I lost myself to him and laid my face upon my lover's breast And care and grief grew dim as in the morning's mist became the light There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair Hope you enjoyed it. 17 | What is Ash Wednesday? | Bible general Archive 1 | LisaMarie | 22538
From NewAdvent.org Ash Wednesday The Wednesday after Quinquagesima Sunday, which is the first day of the Lenten fast. The name dies cinerum (day of ashes) which it bears in the Roman Missal is found in the earliest existing copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary and probably dates from at least the eighth century. On this day all the faithful according to ancient custom are exhorted to approach the altar before the beginning of Mass, and there the priest, dipping his thumb into ashes previously blessed, marks the forehead -- or in case of clerics upon the place of the tonsure -- of each the sign of the cross, saying the words: "Remember man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return." The ashes used in this ceremony are made by burning the remains of the palms blessed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. In the blessing of the ashes four prayers are used, all of them ancient. The ashes are sprinkled with holy water and fumigated with incense. The celebrant himself, be he bishop or cardinal, receives, either standing or seated, the ashes from some other priest, usually the highest in dignity of those present. In earlier ages a penitential procession often followed the rite of the distribution of the ashes, but this is not now prescribed. There can be no doubt that the custom of distributing the ashes to all the faithful arose from a devotional imitation of the practice observed in the case of public penitents. But this devotional usage, the reception of a sacramental which is full of the symbolism of penance (cf. the corcontritum quasi cinis of the "Dies Irae") is of earlier date than was formerly supposed. It is mentioned as of general observance for both clerics and faithful in the Synod of Beneventum, 1091 (Mansi, XX, 739), but nearly a hundred years earlier than this the Anglo-Saxon homilist Ælfric assumes that it applies to all classes of men. "We read", he says, in the books both in the Old Law and in the New that the men who repented of their sins bestrewed themselves with ashes and clothed their bodies with sackcloth. Now let us do this little at the beginning of our Lent that we strew ashes upon our heads to signify that we ought to repent of our sins during the Lenten fast. And then he enforces this recommendation by the terrible example of a man who refused to go to church for the ashes on Ash Wednesday and who a few days after was accidentally killed in a boar hunt (Ælfric, Lives of Saints, ed. Skeat, I, 262-266). It is possible that the notion of penance which was suggested by the rite of Ash Wednesday was was reinforced by the figurative exclusion from the sacred mysteries symbolized by the hanging of the Lenten veil before the sanctuary. But on this and the practice of beginning the fast on Ash Wednesday see LENT. |
