1 | Why should I talk to my local congrega? | NT general Archive 1 | newoldstock | 183439
Let me change the question slightly then to why should a person be rebaptised? Why should I talk to my local congregation? Perhaps they are wrong. I see nothing in the bible, which is my authority, that says anyone should be baptised twice. The only case that I can find is Acts 19:1-7 and the first baptism was that of John.
2 | Did our first baptism 'not take'? | NT general Archive 1 | newoldstock | 183431
Did our first baptism 'not take'? Should we be baptised more than once? We have many denominations. Some emerse, which I believe is the best way. Some drip, drizzle, wet hand, or pour. If we were originally not emersed, and we change to a denomination that dunks, must we be baptised again by dunking to be qualified to join the church? Jim
3 | Is 'laying on of hands' necessary? | Acts 8:17 | newoldstock | 183419
12 But when they believed Philip, as he proclaimed the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. (A) 13 Then even Simon himself believed. And after he was baptized, he went around constantly with [a] Philip and was astounded as he observed the signs and great miracles (B) that were being performed. 14 When the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had welcomed God's message, they sent Peter and John to them. (C) 15 After they went down there, they prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For He had not yet come down on [b] any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (D) 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. The Samaritans believed in the Gospel and in Jesus Christ. They were baptized 'only in the name of the Lord Jesus'. Isn't that enough? Why only when hands were laid on them did they receive the Holy Spirit? Is this applicable today? Thanks, Jim. |

4 | Your thoughts on 40 Days of Purpose? | 2 Tim 4:2 | newoldstock | 158688
My UMC is preparing to start 40 Days of Purpose based on Rick Warren's book The Purpose Driven Life. I have some problems with the book. It has a lot of good stuff in it also, but the bad seems to out weigh the good. What do you think about this movement that is sweeping through many churches?
5 | ESV Bible evaluations? | Leviticus | newoldstock | 146020
Now that everyone has had a chance to really use and study the ESV Bible, what is your conclusion? Back in 2002 there were some long threads on it discussing it's quality, long term use and survival as an alternative to the NIV,NKJV, and NASB. What are your more recent thoughts?
6 | Does sin cause sickness? | James 5:14 | newoldstock | 145676
How come 5:15 links sins to sickness? Does sin cause sickness? Does healing sickness also heal sin and visa versa? And why would James say "if" when all have sinned and continue to sin? James 5:15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. |

7 | Healing through prayer? | James 5:14 | newoldstock | 145612
James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call in the church elders (the spiritual guides). And they should pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Lord's name. James 5:15 And the prayer [that is] of faith will save him who is sick, and the Lord will restore him; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Is James talking about pysical or spiritual sickness in these verses? Or both? If you follow this proceedure, will you be pysically healed if it is God's will? |

8 | How about the other sheep | John 14:6 | newoldstock | 107971
How about the other sheep that I mentioned in the question? If you were born in a Muslim or Jewish or Budist country, it is likely you will be one! In some cases you would be killed, etc. if you didn't follow Mom and Dad's religion. How about them? Hell for eternity?
9 | Are there other ways to salvation ? | John 14:6 | newoldstock | 107953
Are there any ways to salvation other than a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? This question keeps coming up in every church that I have attended. What about babies who die young, aborted babies, aborigines, remote pygmies in Africa, Godly Jewish folks, good Muslims, and so on and so on add infinitum? Help me with this. How do I answer grieving parents and Christ seekers? |

10 | How did alter calls or invitations start | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 102624
Hey, brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. How was the alter call or invitation established in the church and is there any biblical reference for it? I have not found any thus far. Thanks, Jim.

12 | Will we have physical or spiritual bodie | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 101105
In the resurection in heaven will we have physical or spiritual bodies? How old do you think we will be? Do you think that we will recognize others?
13 | Will we have physical or spiritual bodie | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 101107

14 | How do you evangelize someone who | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 100080
How do you evangelize someone who does not necessarily believe that the bible is the word of God; and they may not even believe that there is a God without any doubts? They pay no attention if you try to use the bible in your presentation.
15 | Do you have any internet links? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98140
Ed, thanks for your detailed answer. Do you have any internet links where I could go to read about this Zondervan debacle? I heard a little about it several years back, but I am not real familiar with it.
16 | Which publish for profit ? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98108
Ed, you bring up an interesting point. Which bible publishers publish for profit and which ones are not for profit? Which Bibles are published for marketability and sales and which ones for advancing God's Kingdom? How is the average "pew potato" to know which to purchase? BTW Most "Christian" book stores in my neck of the woods push the NIV. If you walk in one and are baffled by the cornicopia of bible assortments, most suggest the NIV. I have seen this happen many times. The NIV is now the best selling version followed by the King James. Does this indicate that most Christians do not know about the Zondervan promise or that they don't care? Is perhaps the product is more important than the publisher?
17 | Amen Hank. I have 33 bibles | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 97981
Amen Hank. I have 33 bibles (just counted them) and 5 commentaries, dictionaries, and concordances. I think that I often get so wrapped up in what is the best translation to study that I defeat my purpose and don't study enough. Instead I'm reading books like The King James Version Debate, New Age Versions, The Translation Debate, and The Complete Guide to Bible Versions. I'm addicted to finding the right version when I should be reading A Bible! The best Bible is Read! I have not read the HCSB, but as you can see by my exasperation, I probably will. I have only heard the rummor of a new NKJV here on this forum. Let's sell all of the Books that we don't use regularly and set up a StudyBible Forum Group cruise! Jim
18 | Informed opinions of the ESV please? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 97909
What are your informed opinions of the ESV now that you have had more opportunity to read and asess it? I have been using it lately after reading searched posts by the folks of this forum. I thank you for pointing me to it. I am very pleased with this translation. I never thought that I would move from the NKJ and the NIV, but the ESV is winning me over.
19 | Were not all Jews of Jesus's time either | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 96233
Godman, were not all Jews of Jesus's time either Pharisee or Saducee? The Pharisees believed in resurection but the Saducees did not. I believe that Jesus was probably raised as a Pharisee. The wealthiest class was the Saducees. See EdB's answer to my question. Jesus mainly disagreed with the Pharisees interpretation of the law.
20 | Was Jesus born a Pharisee? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 96228
Was Jesus born a Pharisee? Were the religious views of Joseph and Jesus basically Pharisee?
