2 | Caleb from the tribe of Judah? | Num 13:6 | Makarios | 225885
Caleb was one of the two spies (Joshua was the other) in Numbers 13:1-14:30 who brought back a good report from the land with the recommendation of attacking it with the Lord's help and direction. Question: If Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite (Numbers 32:11), was a Gentile (actually, from an Edomitish tribe - Genesis 15:19), then how is it that he represents the tribe of Judah (as a spy) in Numbers 13:6?

6 | Sea Monster vs. Fish (Mt. 12:40,Jh 1:17) | Matt 12:40 | Makarios | 109556
(Translational/Textual Question/Criticism) In Matthew 12:40, the NASB rendering includes "IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER", but in Jonah 1:17 states that it was actually a great fish that swallowed Jonah.. Any thoughts on why the NASB renders Matthew 12:40 as "sea monster" instead of simply 'fish'? |

Larry, you ask "many churches across America have no resemblance to a house of worship".. Would you be describing the Laodicean church (Rev. 3:15-16)? Would you say that many churches today fall prey to the same weakness of the Laodicean church? |

9 | Caiaphas's prophecy misinterpreted? | John 11:51 | Makarios | 103061
Caiaphas, who was serving as the high priest at the time of Jesus, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, "and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad." (v.51,52) So, if being the high priest and trusting this prophecy to come from God, then why was it so "expedient" for one man to die for the people? (v. 50; John 18:14) Why did this "prophecy" seem to add extra vigor to their attempts to kill Jesus? (John 11:53; Matt. 26:3,4) Was the prophecy simply misinterpreted? It is interesting to note that the 'high priest' (Caiaphas) was sentencing the Ultimate High Priest (Hebrews 5:9,10) to death.

13 | Question to ART regarding the Sabbath | Col 2:16 | Makarios | 69339
Greetings ART, What is your reaction/interpretation of the following verses: Mark 2:27 "And he said to them, "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath;" [RSV] Romans 14:5 "One man esteems one day as better than another, while another man esteems all days alike. Let every one be fully convinced in his own mind." [RSV] Colossians 2:16 "Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day-" [NASB] - Makarios |

14 | Greek genitive cases of the word "of" | OT general | Makarios | 69066
Interpretive Challenges... Greek genitive cases of the word "of", comparing literal translations to dynamic equivalence translation.. According to the following examples, which translation of the Greek genitive case is superior? The traditionally more literal translation or its 'dynamic equivalent'? Example 1: Ephesians 1:13.. [NASB] "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise," [NRSV] "In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit;" Since the Greek genitive has a wide range, is "the promised Holy Spirit" stronger here, or is the more literal "Holy Spirit of promise" more precise? Other examples include: Example 2: Ephesians 1:17-18 [NKJV] "... that you may know what is the hope of His calling.." "... in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you.." [NIV] Is one "stronger" than the other? Or do these translations communicate entirely differently in these verses? Example 3: Hebrews 1:3 [KJV] " ... and upholding all things by the word of his power.." [NRSV] "... and he sustains all things by his powerful word. .." Which descriptive genitives in the above examples are 'stronger' or more accurate? (I will retract this question if not responded to in a 24 hour timeframe. Thank you.) |
