2 | What was Eli's son's sin against God? | 1 Sam 2:25 | fatherchuck | 11624
Ver 17..."for the men abhorred the offering of the Lord." Ver 24... "ye make the Lord's people to transgress." Eli's sons served as priests also and were therefore representatives of God to the people. Responsible to teach the people who God was and what His laws were. By their behavior they were expressing contempt for God's offerings, contempt for God. Sleeping with the women who served, was turning God's tabernacle into a house of prostitution. All of this before the nation of Israel to whom they were to be examples of righteousness, to represent God before Israel. In short they were taking God's name in vain in a very blatant manner, a sin that God promises will not go unpunished. Ex 20:7 |

3 | What was Eli's son's sin against God? | 1 Sam 2:25 | Makarios | 11635
"2:25 The second part of this verse does not indicate that this sin was predetermined and inescapable. As in the statement that “the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh” (Ex 9:12), these words describe a man who chooses his own course and justly receives the consequent action of God. The sin of cultic prostitution being committed (v. 22) was particularly heinous because of its clear association with Canaanite religious prostitution." (Believer's Study Bible) "Sin, Punishment—Only God’s punishing intervention can rescue God’s people from some leaders of religious institutions. Eli’s sons openly violated God’s instructions. In love and grief their father warned them to give up their evil practices, but they would not. Thus, God intervened to punish them. Human mediation cannot avert punishment for flagrant rebellion against God. Righteous parents cannot prevent their unrighteous offspring from receiving punishment for their sins." (Disciple's Study Bible) "2:22-34 Eli is warned of the judgment of God that is to fall on his sons. The sons’ sexual exploitation of the women attendants at the sanctuary and their demand for the best of the meat offered in sacrifice contrasts with Samuel’s continued growth in stature and in favor with the LORD and the people. These qualities are assigned to Jesus in Lk 2:52. The message from a man of God (2:27) is that these sons’ betrayal of their trust as priests will bring down on them the judgment of the God who brought Israel out of Egypt." (Cambridge Annotated Study Bible) "2:31-35 The prophet predicts the destruction of the priestly family of Eli, partially fulfilled in the massacre of the priests of Nob (22:11-19) and in the transfer of the priesthood to the family of Zadok in the time of Solomon (1 Kings 2:26-27, 35). The death of Eli’s two sons on the same day would be a sign to validate the prophecy." (Ryrie Study Bible) |

I wonder if Eli's warning wasn't more self serving than genuine for he is rebuked by the Lord in verse 29 for also partaking in removing the best of every offering for themselves, and in 3:13 for honoring his sons above the Lord. I question whether a righteous parent would make an idol out of their children as apparently Eli had done. |
