1 | How was Samuel called from the grave? | 1 Sam 28:7 | Nicholson | 5537
How was Samuel raised or called-up from among the dead? And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. (1Sam.28: 6,7) When we read Ezek.28 and Isa.14: 12-17 we can understand certain things about Satan. Before the beginning of the present age of man, there was a time when Satan was created and anointed to rule over the whole earth. We do not know how long was the duration of that rule. But there was a time when Satan was disqualified because of his pride. Later man (Adam) was created to rule over the earth in place of Satan. (Gen.1: 26-28) But due to the deception of Satan, man also became disqualified to rule. So Satan, the incumbent ruler, though disqualified, continues to rule till man is prepared to take up the scepter and rule as a consort queen along-with the Lord Jesus Christ. (2Cor.4: 4, Eph.2: 2, John 12: 31, Luke 4: 5,6) This principle of God’s government can be seen clearly in the case of Saul and David. Though Saul was disqualified in 1Sam.15 and David was chosen and anointed in 1Sam.16, we find that Saul continued to rule till 2Sam.1. Satan being the ruler of the earth had the Keys of Hades and of Death till that time when our Lord Jesus Christ experienced Death and also entered in the Hades (the place occupied by all the dead). But it was impossible that Hades should hold him. (Acts 2: 24) Then from the time of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ the Keys of Hades and of Death are in His hands as we read in Rev.1: 18. So, during the days of Saul in 1Sam.28, Satan could empower the witch to bring up Samuel. But at present such things are impossible. |

The most prevalent view among orthodox commentators is that there was a genuine appearance of Samuel brought about by God himself. The main piece of evidence favoring this interpretation is 1 Chronicles 10:13-14: "Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the LORD." The Septuagint reading of this text adds: "Saul asked counsel of her that had a familiar spirit to inquire of her, and Samuel made answer to him." Moreover, the medium must not have been accustomed to having her necromancies work, for when she saw Samuel, she cried out in a scream that let Saul know that something new and different was happening. That night her so-called arts were working beyond her usual expectations. Is Samuel's statement to Saul in 1 Samuel 28:15 proof that the witch had brought Samuel back from the dead? The message de-livered by this shade or apparition sounds as if it could well have been from Samuel and from God. Therefore, it is entirely possi-ble that this was a real apparition of Samuel. As to whether Samuel appeared physically, in a body, we conclude that the text does not suggest that he did, nor does Christian theology accord with such a view. But there can be little doubt that there was an ap-pearance of Samuel's spirit or ghost. The witch herself, in her startled condition, claimed that what she saw was a "god" ( loh m, 1 Sam 28:13) coming up out of the earth. The most probable interpretation of this term loh m is the "spirit" of a deceased person. This implies an authentic appearance of the dead, but one that did not result from her witchcraft. Instead, it was God's final means of bringing a word to a king who insisted on going his own way. Those who have argued for a psychological impression face two objections. The first is the woman's shriek of horror in 1 Samuel 28:12. She would not have screamed if the spirit had been merely Saul's hallucination, produced by psychological excitement. The second objection is that the text implies that both the woman and Saul talked with Samuel. Even more convincing is the fact that what Samuel is purported to have said turned out to be true! As for the demon impersonation theory, some of the same objections apply. The text represents this as a real happening, not an impersonation. Of course Satan does appear as "an angel of light" (2 Cor 11:14), but there is no reason to suppose that this is what is going on here. The conclusion is that God allowed Samuel's spirit to appear to give Saul one more warning about the evil of his ways. Source: Kaiser, Walter C. Jr, et. al. Hard Sayings of the Bible |

3 | How was Samuel called from the grave? | 1 Sam 28:7 | Nicholson | 8021
How can a witch bring out a soul from the Hades? That too, it was the soul of one of the greatest prophet of God. Is it possible for any such witch to do the same thing today? These are the most important questions raised in our mind when we read this passage. In MY NOTE above I have focused on these issues without being biased by the widely prevalent orthodox and traditional views.

I don't think this was Samuel from the dead at all, but a demon acting as Samuel. Saul had already inquired of the LORD, and the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by the prophets (1Sam 28:6). If God refused to answer thru the Holy Spirit, I don’t think He would answer thru demonic means, do you? Why would God talk to Saul thru means that would violate scripture? (Luke 16:26) Look at 1Sam 28:19. The demon (or Samuel) says “tomorrow you and your sons will be with me.” Did Saul join Samuel, or demons? I really don’t know for sure, but from the indication of scripture I do not think Saul joined Samuel. Can someone bring out a soul from the dead today? No! I believe today, when it happens, it is the same demon impersonation, as I think happened here. When people consult the devil, it seems to me it would be the devil who would accommodate them, not God. Could a witch bring out a soul from the dead at any time past? Jesus said it was NOT possible. Luke 16:26 says "And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us." I think I will go with what Jesus said. Jesus Lives!!!!!!!!!! |

Alleluia, for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. (Rev.19: 6) The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. Psa.103:19 But God also has certain principles laid down in His government of His whole creation. He normally does not interfere with the “way of all the earth,” (Josh.23: 14, 1Kings 2: 2)except in very rare cases due to the fervent prayers of His people. The system of God’s government is revealed to a little extent in verses Job 1: 6, 2: 1, Dan.10: 13,20, etc. I have also given some details about this in my original note on this topic. Yes, Nicholson, I read your original post concerning 1 Samuel 28 and following... It was a good post and I appreciated what your understanding of it was. I believe that it is impossible for a witch or spiritist of any kind to bring out anyone's soul from anywhere today. I believe that this was a 'one-time' event, and that the 'occurrences' of such things happening today is totally controlled by demons. I believe that God does not work in this way. But it could be possible that He did allow it to happen just that one time (with Samuel) to teach Saul a lesson..
