1 | How much authority do leaders have? | Ruth 3:5 | Hank | 131232
Hello, Reighnskye. Jesus' discourse with the Pharisees and Herodians [See Matthew 22:15-21] ends with this famous verse of Scripture: "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." ..... In Acts 5 when the high priest asked the apostles, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name?" [v. 28], Peter and the other apostles answered, "We ought to obey God rather than men." [v. 29]. See also Acts 4:19. These passages and others in Scripture provide a clue -- actually more than a clue, a key -- to understanding the proper role of the Christian in his relationship to his Lord and governmental (and other human) authority -- to God and Caesar. The biblical principle is this: That Christians should obey governmental authority [Romans 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13-17], but when civil decrees are clearly and directly contrary to God's word, God must be obeyed. [See also Daniel 6 and Exodus 1:15-17]. --Hank

Hank, Thanks much for your response. This scripture speaks quite precisely to the situation that arises when the ordinances of human government conflict with God's laws. ---- They *said to Him, "Caesar's." Then He *said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's." (Matthew 22:21 NAS95) - Reighnskye |
