Hi, Novelist... Welcome to the forum! It is a mistake to read into this some sort qualifying or disqualifying behavior of these men. The primary point of this passage is that God was providentially selecting a subset of the soldiers to participate in the coming battle. Clearly it has nothing to do with prowess as soldiers, since none of them were required to be involved in combat. In spite of popular teachings, anything beyond that is mere speculation.
