Was Gideon really testing God, or was he simply asking God for more encouragement? Either way, though his motive was right (to obey God and defeat the enemy), his method was not that great. Gideon seems to know that his requests might displease God (6:39), and yet he still demanded 2 miracles (6:37,39) even after he saw fire from the rock (6:21). It is true to make good decisions we need facts. Gideon had the facts but he still hesitated, he wanted more proof. Demanding extra signs is an indicator of unbelief. Fear often keeps us from taking action when we should. Visible signs are unnecessary if they only confirm what we already know. We should ask for assurance if we are not sure about a matter, but if we know it to be God's will then we shouldn't need more assurance from Him. |
