1 | Thumbs and toes cut off | Judg 1:6 | budderfligh | 199579 | ||
Also Judges 1:7 And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered [their meat] under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. Can anyone shed some light on why it seemed to be a common practice to cut off the thumbs and big toes of kings who had been conquered? Was this done to demean the vanquished or perhaps used as an outward sign for all to see that they had indeed been conquered? This reminded me of Lev. 8:24 where the blood was applied to Aaron's son's ears, thumbs and toes. Are these two practices related in any way? God's blessings to any who answer and thank you, budderfligh |

Dear Budderfligh, I don't think there is any connection between Judges 1:17 And Lev 8:24 It's seems to me, the book of Judges just reveals to us the depravity, cruelty, and unwilling heart of man to do things God's way and seek Him for our answers. Judg 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. God bless John |

Dear John, Thank you for your response. The reason I asked this question is because I frequently hear preachers giving examples of what they call Jewish customs, but usually I don't find the custom mentioned in Scripture. I thought perhaps these verses in Judges spoke of a commonplace occurance and wondered how it came to be. Do you know of any reliable web sites where I might find some customs practiced by the Jews in Biblical times; perhaps how they lived and what their daily lives were like? Thank you and God bless you also! budderfligh |

Hi Budderlfigh, Your welcome, sorry I don't happen to know of any such websites with that kind of "reliable" Info, especially "without" a certain amount of indoctrination. The sites I've visited tend to indoctrinate in their particular doctrine, however "Biblically" unorthodox it may be. God bless John |
