1 | is this an acceptable offering to God? | Judg 11:31 | CiY127 | 136754
Judges 11:31 (KJV)Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’S, and [see note that follows] I will offer it up for a burnt offering. "And" is "or" The Hebrew (Vav) is a connective particle and is rendered in many different ways. It is also used as a disjunctive, and is often rendered -or- (or with a negative, -nor-). Here, Jephthah’s vow consisted of two parts (1) He would either dedicate it to Jehovah (according to Lev 27); or (2)if unsuitable for this, he would offer it as a burnt offering. He performed his vow and dedicated his daughter to Jehovah by a perpetual virginity (vv 36, 39, 40) but he did not offer her as a burnt offering. |

Hello Shaloms, I'm not sure what you mean by number 1, but I would say that number 2 would indicate that Jephthah sacrificed his daughter. Steve |

4 | why mourn his daughter 4 days a year? | Judg 11:31 | mark d seyler | 136893
Lev 27:2 "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When a man makes a difficult vow, he shall be valued according to your valuation of persons belonging to the LORD. Lev 27:4 'Or if it is a female, then your valuation shall be thirty shekels. Lev 27:5 'If it be from five years even to twenty years old then your valuation for the male shall be twenty shekels and for the female ten shekels. Could it be that after Jephthah's daughter returned from the mountains, and they went to the priests to fulfill this vow, that they had the the best suprise ever, finding out that she could be redeemed? Just a thought. . . Love in Christ, Mark |

5 | why mourn his daughter 4 days a year? | Judg 11:31 | srbaegon | 136894
Hello Mark, You are correct in mentioning this. My take on the situation was that Jephthah sacrificed his duaghter without the priest present. I say this for a two reasons. First, Jephthah was made an outcast because of his parentage and would not have known all the parts of the law. Basically, he was a scoundrel all his days. Second, verses 39-40 says that he did what he intended, and there were mourners ever since. Steve |
