I need to clarify what I meant when I said I tend to steer people away from John. I meant I tend to steer new Christians away from John until they get a better understanding of some of the concepts of Christianity. John 1:1 can be confusing if you don't understand the concept of God and Trinity. How much more is John 6 which theologians argue about to this day. |

Dear EdB, Just my 2 cents of another perspective on new Christians reading John. I agree that with the western background mind, the book of John could be difficult to understand. However, as a Chinese, I find that John 1:1 might not be that difficult to understand for knowing God. When it speaks about the "Word", the concept is so much in line with the original "Tao" (in ancient China). I am not saying the religion "Tao (meaning in Chinese : way, word)" is identical to Christian faith. While one of the posts stating that Mark was for Roman, Luke was for Greek; the Christian faith is from eastern world; now John contains element that is so harmonious with one of the major Chinese beliefs and helping Chinese to be familiar with the God mentioned in the Bible. What can I say, but hallelujah! Shalom Azure |
