1 | How could Catholic priests be wrong? | NT general | novamom17 | 200478 | ||
In talking with a Catholic family member about Christ, I can foresee the question being asked: How could the Catholic priests have it so wrong then? Or at least not make us see the distinction that salvation is a guarantee. How might I respond to this? |

Hi, novamom... Welcome to the forum! The best answer is always rooted in the Scriptures. Citing the language of the old Baptist divines from a few centuries ago: "The purest churches under heaven are subject to mixture and error (1 Corinthians 5:1-13; Revelation 2:1-29; 3:1-22); and some have so degenerated as to become no churches of Christ, but synagogues of Satan (Revelation 18:2; 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12); nevertheless Christ always hath had, and ever shall have a kingdom in this world, to the end thereof, of such as believe in Him, and make profession of His name (Matthew 16:18; Psalm 72:17; 102:28; Revelation 12:17)." --1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith (chapter 26, paragraph 3) If you study church history, you'll find that the Romanists held -- and still hold -- many more doctrinal errors than the one you shared. Many of them are much more serious. For example: "If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema." --Council of Trent, Canons on Justification (Canon IX) In Him, Doc |
