2 | Was John the Baptist a Priest? | NT general | Jalek | 239673
Greetings, His father was a Levite, which was the priestly tribe. I recall reading somewhere that he was a member of the Essenes, which was a part of the Sanhedren along with the Sadducees and Pharisees. So was he a priest? There's a strong possibility that he was. Jalek |

Hi, Jalek... We are a Study Bible Forum. People coming here and asking questions are looking to the Scriptures for various answers. In compliance with the Terms of Use, always try to cite specific specific Bible references to support your answer. In this case, with a little bit of effort, you might direct them to the specific chapter that documents John's birth. You could even tell them, from that passage, why Zechariah is known to be a priest. Thus, you have instructed the poster, emphasizing the authority of Scripture and its sole sufficiency. Greetings Doc, I don't intend to be rude, but why does my not providing a scripture reference provoke a public rebuke for all to see? Was the information I provided incorrect? Jalek |

Hi, Jalek... We function in a public venue. Everything that we say is a matter of public consumption. The Terms of Use are also a matter of public of record. Perhaps as you learn to participate within our gracious host's guidelines, others will do so as well (Proverbs 1:5). We are, of course, particularly concerned about the many silent readers for them, our replies and responses either instruct in concert with Him with whom we have to do, or in discord with Him (Mark 9:40). Correction is a cherished thing (Proverbs 12:1); for as we apply what we are taught, we are able, more and more, to improve our pedagogy (Titus 2:1; Ephesians 4:29), for which thing we will stand in judgment (Matthew 12:36). Some people have an agenda other than sola Scriptura, some people are more concerned with self-justification, some people are simply cantankerous, some people are unteachable, and some people come to the forum to post but briefly. In my opinion, more can be achieved by encouraging someone like you: in deference to our host, to the benefit of our readers, and to the glory of God. In Him, Doc PS If you would like to discuss anything directly, my email address is in my profile. |

Thank you for your comments. Jalek, I appreciated what you had to say. I am convinced that the idea of John the Baptist being a priest did not come from the bible itself but is assumed due his father's position. As for scripture, I am fully aware of the passages regarding the life of John. Thanks
