Greetings and welcome to the forum. There are many verses contained in Scripture that fall into the category of what we call, in the English, parenthetical which boils down to thing in addition that don’t actually necessitate action on the part of the one in question which answers your question. Case and point: The entire book of John was written to convey a specific point. John 20:30-31 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. The sum total of John’s gospel revolves around the word believe, which in the Koine Greek of the New Testament is the word, PISTEUO and just who Jesus is as the focal point. Of the four gospels that we have in the Bible, John expounds on the meaning of faith more then all the rest, close to 98 times, yet the word faith isn’t mentioned; he chose rather instead to use the word believe. The word faith and or believe is a transitive verb, which places the emphasis on the object not the subject. The key to salvation is not in the one doing the believing but the integrity of the object believed on which must be “Jesus” the very Son of God Himself. Believing is not doing something, but how one thinks. What one does after believing comes about as a result of having faith in God’s Son, Jesus the Christ; the works are forthcoming as an act of God in one’s life. Ephes. 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Many see salvation as putting the cart before the horse, i.e. works for salvation, and according to God’s protocol that just does not work. God did “all” the work and He gets all the credit all we can do is thank Him for the fantastic gift of eternal life that resides in His Son Jesus Christ. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 John 5:11-13 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
