Hi dear Christian friends: I have a perhaps strange question. I am seriously thinking of buying a HOLMAN Study Bible. I am a Southern Baptist. I like the notes that I have seen on line, and it uses the name of God Yahweh. But I have not known anyone who has one and how they like it. I am very solidly a student of my NASB, so the Holman would be in addition to my other Bibles. SO... if you own one tell me what you think about it, please. Thanks, as always. justme |

Hi, justme... For what it is worth: About a week ago I asked some SBC pastors this very question. (How is that for serendipity?) Out of about half dozen of them, only one actually used the HCSB. They thought that the HCSB was a failed attempt by Lifeway to provide a standard version for SBC churches to use, since it would save the publisher money, paying fees to other publishers. They said that the Lifeway bible study series, however, tend to use other translations, depending on their authors. The other pastors who did not use the HCSB, were split in their preferences between the NASB and the ESV. Nevertheless, the consensus of them all was that the HCSB was pretty much like the NIV. I got the impression that the HCSB uses dynamic equivalence, similar to the approach used in the NIV. In Him, Doc |

Thanks Doc: They sure have a long list of who's who in the list of people who put it together. I don't buy anything but leather so it was going to be a good investment. I think I will rethink it over. Maybe go ans spend sometime reading some places I generally look to see how they got the wording. I had heard that the Holman was made to stop paying for rights to use other versions. Do you think they saved any money? blessings Doc. |

Hi, justme... From what they said, there appeared to be little interest in it. Saving money was Lifeway's intention; but it didn't sound like the HCSB was used enough to have saved them much. Later collaboration with Zondervan probably also made it less attractive to Lifeway. In Him, Doc |

Doc" Harper Collins not only bought out Zondervan, but Nelson as well. They may also have bought out others as well. With more Bibles being printed in china and other third world places a good Bible made in the US are mainly genuine leather better bound Bibles. They last longer and that's the ones I get. I am constantly getting information about trials that ask me which covers and pictures I like best. So they are spending time in research. Next time I go near Kansas City I might look at LifeWay and check it out. I have not been in KC in about 6 years, so that won't be soon. I usually go to Lemstone Christian Books in Columbia MO. I go to the VA in Columbia Mo about 100 times a year. Maybe this year will be less as they have put me on some new meds that don't need so much checking up on. justme |
