Everyone, This will probably be my last post here. It saddens my heart. For several days I have had a post of importance up and NOT ONE of you has responded for information about it. I've looked at the petition that is online and of the 2,000 signatures that I viewed (26,000 so far have signed it), over 100 of them are from people who have prepared lives, hearts, and homes for orphaned children in Guatamala. That's 300 people minimum that are going to be affected!! This is supposed to be sola scriptura - but what good is studying the scriptures if you cannot even reach out to people in need with just a few minutes of your time? It's just a lot of black letters on white paper, nothing alive in the heart at all, just a lot of knowledge that's totally useless!!!! You have all been too busy with trivialities to spend 5 minutes to read a little information and hopefully sign a petition that might help hundreds of families become complete and little children who have no one come home to families that already love them! Even if you read the information and decided Guatamala is right in what they are doing and chose not to sign the petition, that would be better than not doing anything at all when so much is at stake! I'm extremely surprised, astonished and saddened at your seemingly lack of interest and caring! Mat. 18:2-5 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them and said, "Truly I say to you unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me..." Mark 10:13-14 But when Yeshua saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these..." |

Dear Cheri :: It is disturbing to learn of any experience on Study Bible Forum that saddens the heart of its registrants. Other responders, among them Azure and Tim, have expressed their thoughts quite candidly and quite well, and it seems to me that both of them have made a valid point when they point out that just because your question-request was not responded to doesn't necessarily mean that no one read it or that no one acted upon it, but that it was left untouched, thus keeping it foremost on the home page, so that other readers would be afforded the opportunity to see it. ...... Regarding your point about the Forum's absorption in trivialities, I believe it has merit and should be taken to heart by us all who post on SBF, newcomers and veterans alike. It is easy and tempting, but always unwise, to allow ourselves to veer off course and become absorbed in things that are really quite trivial and contribute nothing of value to the readers of this Forum -- things like engaging in petty spats, quarrels and debates, disagreeing over things that really don't matter all that much, or simply indulging in idle chit-chat. We have clear guidelines that have been laid down by the Lockman Foundation. It behooves each of us to do his utmost to folow them. Thanks, Cheri, for expressing your concerns. Whether you choose to remain or go away is, of course, your decision to make, not ours. But I do hope that you will pray about it fervently and proceed accordingly. May God continue His blessings upon you, your daughter and your extended family. --Hank | ||||||

Hank, Azure, Steve, John, Shelly, and everyone else, I had been up for over 24 hours when I posted, perhaps I had been ruled more by emotion than the Spirit. I beg forgiveness. In this respect, I'm encouraged and very happy to say I was mistaken!! After a few hours sleep though, I am still weeping and broken over the adoption situation - sooo many lives hanging in the balance. (I am adopted, so I feel a real affinity for these babies waiting to go home.) I did not post any links thinking that I shouldn't - once again, my mistake. Please forgive. And don't let my stupidity stop your responses! Sign an online petition (over 26,000 signatures so far): www.petitiononline.com Look for the link on this page that says Guatamala 5000. This should lead you to more info. Cheri |

Dear Cheri, I haven't read through the other answers to your post, so forgive me if I repeat what has already been said. First, when someone places a prayer request on the forum as a question, it is generally allowed to remain without an "answer." This is so that it can stay on the front page for a while, increasing the likelihood that more forum readers will see it. Second, not all of us agree as to what degree of social activism is appropriate on which topics. (Some people are heavily involved in national politics of Christian interest; some in local politics; some in resisting abortion, gambling, pornography, etc.) Third, believers are not all the same. Some feel strongly about some issues, while others feel strongly about other issues. Each could fault the other for being insensitive or unloving, but that is hugely presumptuous. Fourth, the Scriptures set out very specific standards that are we are to be concerned about. As strongly as we all feel about other social, cultural, and political issues, the vast majority of them are not explicitly mandated concerns of the church. That doesn't mean that these things are not worthy causes. Only that they become more a matter of personal inclination and less a matter of universal concern. Fifth, God has, in His providence, seen fit to imbue you with strong feeling for this particular subject. Consequently, He has used you to make the rest of us aware of a topic with which we might have otherwise remained ignorant. You do not know, nor can you rightly determine, what He will ultimately do as a result. He may choose to let you know, but chances are you will never know. It is His business. Sixth, the website that you have specified, does not give complete information. It would be unwise to sign a petition without knowing both sides of the issue (Proverbs 18:13). A quick search of the web has not yielded the text of the original "DOS warning." Last, this is a text based forum with the focus on the text of Scripture. You ought not attempt to infer an emotional state based purely on our posts. Statistical analysis of such attempts has demonstrated that people are mistaken more often than not when attempting such an inference. What is more, most of us simply aren't that skilled at properly conveying our emotions via text. Furthermore, Scripture doesn't speak of emotion as a fruit from which spiritual states are to be judged. Ours is a faith of truth to which our often respond. Not a faith of feelings from which truth is deduced. In Him, Doc PS In the meantime, I am praying with others for the widows and fatherless in Guatemala. Thank you for drawing our attention to the need there. |
