1 | Question on Hymn of Invitation tradition | Bible general Archive 4 | rustic1959 | 232116
Many churches have the ceremony and on the hand written bulletin, after the sermon, ( Hymn of Invitation ) which during a song that centers around the confession of faith and the taking of first steps of salvation, my question, ( which is not petty) the scriptures never describe that we ( invite ) Jesus into our heart. I feel that this is an act of surrender, not an invitation. Let me explain, the grace from above comes to the humble, where is the humble in asking for an invite. The very word is wrong, and to make it worse, it is a man's tradition, which has no place in salvation. Many people every year are brain-washed with this act of ceremony, to me has no weight or valid right to even be done. I will find it interesting as to the response I get from this question.

rustic1959: Welcome to the Study Bible Forum. You are indeed hitting upon a very tender spot that has been a life long subject I feel quite adamant about. In the movie FAITH LIKE POTATOES which is a true story, Angus Buchan is standing at the end of the sermon, and the pastor ask for those who whant to kow Christ to step out. There is no music, no high pressure twisting of words, and no inviting Jesus into your heart. This movie shows how a invitation should be done in my not so humble opinion. We submit our self, and surrender to Jesus. The invatation is a time for Jesus inviting us to surrender to his Lordship, and repenting of our sins. We begin by following His Commands, submiting to Jesus as Lord. Baptism, and being involved with a local church are parts of our submission. Responding to forgiveness of our sins is totally awesome, we respond to His Grace bu learning to love as we never knew before. God teaches us to walk by faith, learning to walk by faith takes not a few moments, but takes us s full life time. When Jesus said we must take up our cross, the cross He talks about is not on wheels, or power driven. Carring our cross is blood sweat and tears. I agree with you the invitation today is one in which the average person might well think we are DOING JESUS CHRIST A BIG FAVOR. How utterly twisted this is. The Scriptures call for us to surrender to Jesus Christ in humility. The Bible tells us He Choose us, we have done NOTHING to deserve salvation. Yes many many who make these man made invations are in reality inviting people to aJesus that will send then to the "pit", unless God extends his grace to them again. Thank you for bringing this subject up, maybe someone who failed to surrender to Jesus just might find the Jesus who loves and forgives, but also requires us to repent and prove we are so so in love with Him we are indeed following Him. What is proof that a persons salvation has seriour doubt is when someone says. "I love Jusus but have no use for the church". That is not salvation talking! justme |
