Hi Brad, I wanted to ask something about the Easter holiday.. My husband is a JW, maybe you know thier beliefs, and if so, they are highly against celebrating any holidays. I celebrated Easter and on Easter night i got home, and my husband has this website up and his bible out, showing me that Easter is about worshipping a pagan goddess Ishtar. Well, i had no idea about this goddess, and i told him i don't celebrate Easter for that, i've just always done it, because my family has been doing it since always... He says "God(Jehovah) doesn't like that and that i am wrong in celebrating Easter, no matter how much we want to take the pagan out of it, it is always going to be pagan." And he laughed at me, because he says it's funny that i still participate in it knowing that Easter was created to worship a pagan god.. So is it still ok for Christians today? I don't feel wrong, and God knows i don't worship any other gods.. Any advice on this issue? Thanks Julia |

Hi Julia, I'm the other Brad, so if you don't mind... :-) To my knowledge, Easter is not about worshipping any pagan goddess- despite what the JW's say! Easter is about CELEBRATING the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ! He is Risen, is He not? (1 Cor. 15:14) Since the JW's deny the Diety of Christ, they must therefore, dismiss Easter as any type of celebration affirming his Divinity! Does this make sense? The Watchtower Organization has only been around since the late 19th Century! What did they uncover(?) that the rest of the Church missed for 1900 Years? Nothing. Ask him why they deny that Jesus is God when scripture- and the Church- have affirmed His Diety! Jesus clearly told the Pharisees in John 8:58," "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." (NASB) The Jews picked up stones to stone Him, for they clearly knew what He was affirming- to be God! Similarly, after Jesus told Thomas, "Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing." Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:27-28) Thomas certainly knew WHO Jesus was. Unfortunately, many well-meaning JW's and your husband have been systematically deceived by their Watchtower Organization! Their theology is built upon Arianism- (the denial that Christ is Divine) which was soundly defeated at the Council of Nicea in 325! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

If my memory serves me correctly, the pagan part comes in from the German goddess of fertility (word Easter is believed to have derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility, which is part of the reason for the Easter bunny and the eggs). One can also make the argument that the word Easter did not come from the mistranslation of the word, but was a word that was made to designate the time period of Jesus death and resurrection. Brad |

Thank you to both Brads. I often think about how much better and easier it would be if my husband and i had the same beliefs, to avoid any disagreements when it comes to talking about God's word. It's somewhat hard, and i feel that we become a little distant from each other when God's word is brought up, for us that is, because we believe total opposite from each other. The pastors wife told me at our church that it's not supposed to be easy being a christian and it's not going to be easy either. I felt pretty encouraged... But i know she's speaking the truth. But i am not alone, because God comforts me and strengthens me and trust in him that he will see me through anything. Thank you all for your help and advice. |
