Hello DD4Truth, Here are specific mentions of tithing, in the New Testament, Matt 23:23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. Luke 11:42 "But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. Luke 18:12 'I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.' Heb 7:8 In this case mortal men receive tithes, but in that case one receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives on. Heb 7:9 And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, Now, the tithe is a tenth part of any thing. Tithe actually means a tenth, or to [deci]mate.(deci equals 10). Mal 3:8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, 'How have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings. 25 Mal 3:10 "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows. wordoer |

Hello wordoer, Thank you for your update. I was incorrect to say that tithing is not mentioned without providing additional details. However, the spirit of my prior brief reply was to say that tithing is not mentioned in regards to our giving in the new testament. In Matt 23 and Luke 11 Jesus is rebuking the Pharisees for tithing and neglecting the weightier matters of the law. In Luke 18 the reference to tithing is in the Pharisees prayer. All of the above verses mention tithing in a negative light as a matter of pride in keeping the law. In Heb 7 the Hebrew writer is making an argument to prove that Melchizedek was greater than Abraham and Levi (or the Levitical priesthood) who received the old testament tithes. The Mal reference is an old testament reference. In regards to New Testament giving, we have: Mat 6:4 "so that your giving may be in secret..."; 2 Cor 9:7 "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" 2 Cor 9:6 "...whoever sows sparingly will also rep sparingly, and whoever sow bountifully will also reap bountifully."; 1 Cor 16:2 "On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come." ; Lk 18:24 "...how difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!"; Mat 6:19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth..." This is not a completely exhaustive list but covers the majority of the new testaments teaching on giving. In regards to the amount of our giving we are told in the new testament to give as we have prospered and to give as we have decided in our heart. I would recommend to give a tithe, but I do not read in the new testament where it a requirement as it was in The Law (Old Testament). I hope this clarifies my earlier post. |
