Dear confused, 1/ The subject should have been discussed a lot on the forum in the past. You may try doing a word search "canon" via the "Advanced Search" function for further study. 2/ I would also recommend you 2 articles which I think helpful for your reference: (a) Formation of the New Testament Canon (link: http://www.bible-researcher.com/canon1.html) (b) Is the New Testament Text Reliable? - by Greg Koukl (link: str.org) 3/ You say "love to hear how you guys have settled this for yourselves." We do not settle it for ourselves. God settles it for us by His sovereign will. Shalom Azure |

Thank you Azure. I will check out the references you listed. I am not sure what you mean on number 3 though. Are you saying that God has "determined" what you would believe? Or simply that whether or not you believe it, it is the truth? Actually, either way it appears you have still come about to some sort of peace that these books are from God and the other "candidates" like the Gospel of Thomas or the Revelation of Peter or many others should not be included as being from God. Some people have never really questioned that and just accept it. Sometimes I wish I worked like that, but I question virtually everything. So I am looking to hear how you and others have come to the conclusion that the NT is "God breathed". Thank you, confused??? |

Hello confused???, Here's my brief input. The latter half of your response is dealing with the Canonization and Inspiration of Scripure. What you're asking is: 1. How do we know what books belone is the Bible, etc?; 2. What is inspiration? One of the primary verses used to support Inspiration is 2 Tim. 3:16 "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;" (NASB) There are others as well, but scripture itself claims to be "God-breathed" (theonupsos). As to what books belong in and were determined as part of the Canon, I'd highly recommend "The Canon of Scripture" by F.F. Bruce. I hope this helps, BradK |
