1 | What should I read first? | Bible general Archive 4 | Mary Ann D | 220904
I have not read too much of the Bible for about twenty years. I did study it in school, and have some memory of the stories and teaching of Jesus as well as some old testament stories. I feel very strongly that I need to read and study Jesus teaching. I do not have a single Christian friend to help guide my study and it is completely overwhelming me. Does anybody here have a suggestion of where I should start reading and how to understand it? Usually I just open the book to anywhere and read a little, but I need to actually study it somehow. Maybe there are lessons somewhere online that I can be directed to? I just found this board this evening and it is a very strange format for me so forgive me if this is not an appropriate type of question for this board. Thanks for any helpful suggestions. |

Hi Mary Ann D and welcome to the forum. Just starting anywhere in the Bible and reading it is like opening up a math book to geometry and trying to figure out how to do it without even knowing addition. I would strongly recommend that you start in the New Testament in the book of John, which is the fourth book in the N.T. Before you try to read it pray and ask God to reveal the truth that it contains within its pages. After you read the Gospel of John then I would then go back to Matthew then Mark and Luke then read John again before proceeding on through the rest of the New Testament. One can’t understand the Old Testament without the knowledge of the New Testament, it just won’t make sense. God wants to revel His Son Jesus Christ to you so you can understand His precious Word. I hope you enjoy the forum, CDBJ |

Thank you for your response. You are the second person to suggest John to me. I must humbly confess that when it happened I open the book anywhere as God put the inclination into me to do it, It always seems to me that God instructs me in a very specific way with respect to a certain confusion in me. It caused me to alter my attitude, or change direction of thought/deed where I likely would go into the fire if I hadn't. This was before I realized my Christian identity. I feel that God is with me in every moment and guarding me from His enemy who wants me. Perhaps I don't understand all context but this much is evident to me. But I agree that the thing that God really wants me to do is read everything, and really get to know the scripture. Jesus is God, He is the one that is with me, but I always say God. For now I will start with John. Thank you.

I was led to read Psalm 51 at the beginning of my conversion. I read it each day for 5 days. Wonderful things happened to my heart. If I might suggest reading this after your daily reading? |
