Hi Brad It just seems as though Noah was very harsh for such a menial offence. Could there be, a connection of these two passages, for a better understanding of just why Noah cursed his son Ham, and his descendants? Gen. 9:21-24 21. And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. 22. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. 23. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. 24. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. Lev 18:6-8 6. None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD. 7. The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. 8. The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness. lightedsteps |

Leviticus really answered my question "is[was] it a sin to see your parents undressed". The nail was hit right on the head with your question regarding the harshness. The Bible doesn't say that Ham "did anything" to his father ... just that he saw him. Which brings up a question now ...why did God curse Ham's decendants? They didn't do anything wrong. And for that matter, why are we today still paying for Adam and Eve's GREAT sin ... i.e., men will work by the sweat of their brow ... women will have pain in child birth? I know God is a loving God ... but why make decendants pay for something their silly ancestors did? Aileen | ||||||

Aileen, you may need to do a little more research. Reading three different commentaries, the sin was not seeing him naked, nor does Lev 18 talk about seeing them "undressed" but the phrase is "uncover their nakedness", which in two books I have checked, both concur that this was referring to sexual relationship, not the actual nakedness. My opinion on the passage is that Ham did something wrong. We are suppose to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12 and Deuteronomy 5:16). In the NT we can see that the Jesus even mentioned honoring your parents and how the leaders of the time had corrupted this commandment (Matthew 15:3-9). Ham appears to be dishonoring his father by his behavior when he found his father drunk. In my opinion the reason he was cursed was because of his failure to honor his father. Brad |
