Brenda, The only "errors" I have seen in the Bible..KJV..are errors in translation. Those are not to be construed as errors in what G-d is presenting us as a road map for eternal salvation. As with any human touched process there will be errors. The 66 books of the Bible were written by 40 some authors... man... over several centuries, in different languages, then translated from those language(s)to english with errors in translation. There are several examples, such as; The Greek word PNUEMA,which means spirit, was improperly translated to Ghost. So we have Holy Ghost used in Scriptures. Properly, it is Holy Spirit. While it should be the goal of each person to know all scripture, we should not loose sight of plain and clear Bible teachings of the three things we must know and accept for eternal salvation; 1)Repentance 2)Baptism 3)Then we must live a righteous life according to G-ds' commandments. It is often said that those are presented in the Bible in a manner that a ten year old can understand. You may wish to do a general search using "Errors in the Bible"...and you will have no problem in having material to read on the subject. A WORD OF CAUTION....validate before you accept findings. |

Hi, G... I wouldn't exactly say that "Ghost" was an erroneous choice of words -- let alone a translation error. William Tyndale was probably responsible for that, if we can "blame" a single person. For example, he translated Matthew 1:18 as "The byrthe of Iesus Christ was on thys wyse. When hys mother Mary was betrouthed to Ioseph before they came to dwell to gedder she was foude with chylde by ye holy goost." The Geneva Bible translation followed suit with "Nowe the birth of Iesvs Christ was thus, When as his mother Mary was betrothed to Ioseph, before they came together, shee was found with childe of the holy Ghost." Like with the majority of their work, the KJV translators simply adopted Tyndale's work. The problem was choosing a word in English that properly carried the notion of the Greek pnuema and the Latin spiritus. Remember, language changes over time. If you were a contemporary of Tyndale, you might well have agreed with his choice of words. Nonetheless, to call it a translation error would require great expertise in the 15th century English. Doc, The reason I consider it an error when translated in connection with Holy Spirit...Pneuma is Ghost. But,for hundreds of times in other general scripture translations it appears as spirit. I could never undestand that phenomenon, quite frankly. Strongs Dictionary was used in my reference. Tyndale is hardly a guide on this topic for me, although he serves to fill space in the history books. For Christ, Preston |

"William Tyndale (1493-1536) devoted his life to translating the Bible from the original Greek and Hebrew into English. His print shop was raided and destroyed by the city officials because it was an illegal operation. Tydale was executed for his "heretical" efforts. His last words, in the form of a prayer, were "Lord, open the King of England's eyes." Just three years later, King Henry VIII ordered that every church in England have a copy of the Scriptures in English. Tyndale's Bible would become the basis for the King James Bible, first published in 1611 which, for many today, is still considered England's "official" Bible." taken from "A Guide to the Scriptorium", The Holy Land Experience. It is easy to criticize but more appropriate would be a thankful heart for those men God used to bring the bible to us. These men who were martyred for the word of God are in my estimation most honorable. I am thankful that my God raised up men such as Tyndale for such a time as this. "Esther for 4:14..for such a time as this" |

Amen, sister Val! John Piper has an excellent, though short, discussion of the life of William Tyndale: http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/Biographies/ It is entitled "Always Singing One Note -- A Vernacular Bible." I thought you might be interested. In Him, Doc |
