Any study book that you read will have someone's opinion written within the pages. There is one Book and One only that can bring you Life. There is one Book that will bring you to your knees. There is one Book we are commanded to read. No matter what is said, the final word on the matter is Scripture. The Bible is written in such a way that the words written within mature as you mature. We have much technology and many abilities earlier fathers did not have and yet many are farther away from the Father than those. As Paul states, we have such a cloud of witnesses, we really should be ashamed that we are so far from the Father. Always looking for some easy way to go through the gate. Looking for the path of least resistance. Well, there is only One path and Jesus told us how to learn all there is to know about the Father. "Man shall not live ... but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God." We can have Philo, Josephus, Pink, Packer, Spurgon, Graham and these are good and not to be trod upon but they all contain a man's opinion and therefore contain a bias someplace. There is One Book and One only. If one could master the book of Psalms and the book of Proverbs and of Job and of the Gospel of John, and ... well, there you go, book after book within the Book. Scripture alone I think is the call. The Holy Spirit is promised to guide us unto ALL understanding, if we are willing. In an hour when we know not what to say, the Holy Spirit is promised to give us the words to speak. Where two or three are gathered in My name, there I Am. In your closet in prayer we see the Father. "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me." Worship Him in Spirit and Truth and you will know Him for He will show Himself to you. "Will ye also go away?" ... "Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life." Yes, but, ...! eklektos |

Another reader in another thread wrote: "[In] MY OPINION, when I have Bible study, all other books except the Bible are put away" (emphasis added). My answer: If all other books except the Bible are put away, then what you end up with will be YOUR OPINION. |

Greetings Kalos! Can't God teach us with Scripture and nothing else? Other books may be helpful and insightful, but the Bible is God's Word. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Greetings Kalos! I would hope by now that everyone on the forum understands that I appreciate the work of those who came before us. There are many great scholars and theologians who have contributed much to our understanding of God's word. However, at the same time, I would never go as far as to say that we cannot understand Scripture without them. Sure, there may be some obscure historical reference that someone might not be able to figure out without the input of a great historian, but the message of Scripture is clear. In fact, I would argue that many of our differences in the church might be resolved if we went to Scripture first and the commentators only second. ;-) Have a great day my friend! Tim: On the one hand, it's like I heard on Christian radio (David Jeremiah): "If you are the only one who believes something in the Bible, then you don't want to go around talking about it." I.e., if you are the only one who believes a certain thing -- a certain interpretaion. ____________________ "Just because I studied the Word and arrived at a conclusion does not mean that it is correct." ____________________ 'Do my conclusions agree or disagree with related areas of scripture and others who have studied the passage? (From the article "Biblical Interpretation" at Christian Apologetcis and Research Ministry) '...I’ve already presented other verses which seem to agree with my conclusion. However, it is not in agreement with all of the commentaries I’ve read on this verse. At this point I would need to present my conclusion to others to see what they think. Just because I studied the Word and arrived at a conclusion does not mean that it is correct. But it doesn’t mean it is wrong either. 'By consulting with others, by examining the word again, and by seeking God and his illumination, I can only hope to arrive at the best possible conclusion about a passage...' (To read more, see "Biblical Interpretation" at: www.carm.org/bible/interpret.htm) 1 John 2:27 '"You have no need for anyone to teach you." Both "you's" are plural and refer to the believing community as a whole; there is no ground here for a hyper-individualistic understanding of the Gospel wherein the views of other believers and the gathering of believers together are considered unimportant' (Jewish New Testament Commentary, David H. Stern, Jewish New Testament Publications, Inc., 1992). On the other hand, going to SCRIPTURE FIRST and the commentators only second is a principle with which I agree 100 percent. Grace to you, Kalos |

Greetings Kalos! I like David Jeremiah! Everyday on my way to work, I used to drive by the church he pastored in Ft. Wayne, IN. :-) The only problem I would have with these quotes is that if you check 10 commentaries, you will probably get 10 different views. :-) Well, I have to get ready to go to the dentist. Have a great day my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
