Psalm139:13: 'Check with your local Christian bookstore’s “Bible person” ask his opinion as his knowledge will be more diverse and better able to assist you...' In a perfect world this would be true everywhere. In my experience in the real world the reverse is usually true. :-) In the real world I consider myself blessed if the bookstore clerk can find a particular Bible and tell me how much it costs. In this instance, you have given good advice regarding a specific topic of which I am in total ignorance -- using USB Ports. May I add that another very good source of product information is amazon.com? Anyone who knows the name of a particular product can go to amazon.com and read customer reviews of that product. I may not agree with every review, but it is often helpful to consider why a customer recommends or does not recommend a certain product. You will often find more detailed information about a product in the customers' reviews than you will in the manufacturer's description. Again, my thanks to you for providing information on a subject about which I know nothing -- using USB Ports. Grace to you, Kalos |

Part 1 of 2 parts April 16, 2006; Easter Blessings to all who read this posting My dear One: It is sad that the Bible bookstore near you does not have a competent person to answer all your questions regarding Bibles, or Bible resources, software, USB Ports, and a 100 more devices and resources to help you understand and read the scriptures. In the area where I live, there are so many very large churches, such as: Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa with Chuck Smith; Saddleback Church with Rick Warren, the author of the Purpose Driven Life; Fullerton Evangelical Free Church, where Chuck Swindal was the pastor, his ministry puts out a daily radio program, and publishes several excellent books a year. The Crystal Cathedral is in Garden Grove with Robert Scholer. Regarding Robert Scholer and many of his teachings, I do not support his thinking of Power of Positive Thinking because no matter how much positive thinking someone will have does not get anyone into heaven. I will say that I have met many godly men and women who attend the Crystal Cathedral. OK, back to the point. Since there are so many large churches, we also have a copious amount of Christian bookstores. The very first time I learned and became sold on a translation, (that I continue to use to this day), is from the man at the Christian bookstore, he knew everything about every translation. His knowledge was unbelievable – it was his encouragement, at the young age of 13, when I found such a powerful love for the Scriptures and His teachings. I bought the first release of The Open Bible that uses the New American Standard Bible translation. This Bible had so many tools that taught me how to study the Bible, do word studies, search out truths, how to cross-reference verses, and Biblically walked me through many of the truths regarding our Christian faith. I learned so much and have stayed with this translation through my teens, into young adulthood, then through my years of adulthood, to now the marking of a half of century. In my personal library, I have approximately 15 different translations of the Bible and 2 paraphrases. All of the Bibles are of value, each in a different way, and most were purchased before the electronic age and before I found the different Biblical websites. The Christian bookstores in my area also help with many resources to help dig into the Word deeper, such as: Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Biblical Works, The New Bible Dictionary, the Complete Word Study New Testament by Zodhiates, and How to Study Your Bible Precept Upon Precept by Kay Auther. These are a few excellent resources and I hope that they are of value to you. With all of this said allow me to offer some information and resources that I use when I need information: Berean Christian Stores 1440 South Harbor Blvd Fullerton, CA 714-680-9500 The person who works here is the most knowledgeable regarding Bibles, software, and all the resources available regarding the Bible. If I remember, he works Monday – Friday. Lighthouse Christian Stores 3008 Bellflower Blvd Long Beach, CA 800-562-4253 - with the 800 number, it might be valuable to call them first, that way it will not cost you anything. I am almost sure that each of the venders will ship their merchandise. Or Lighthouse Christian Stores 1845 Chapman Orange, CA 714-639-0810 These three are excellent, although there are a 100 more Bible bookstores in our area. If none of these work I would go back to the Christian bookstore that you frequent. Talk to the manager/owner and see if you could have the name and number of his/her vender. The vender will have a larger resource base to help you. I would also hope that your pastor would be knowledgeable of Bible translations and many of their resources. In His heart, your sister-in-the-Lord, Psalm 139 |

Psalm139:13: Once again you have provided us with much good, helpful information, which I greatly appreciate. I envy you living near so many good churches and Christian bookstores. I live approximately halfway between St. Louis, Missouri and Springfield, Illinois. These two cities have fine Bible bookstores, but there are none located between the two cities. The stores where I regularly browse and purchase Bibles and books are Christianbook.com and Amazon.com. Not to boast (2 Cor. 11:17), but when I said in my previous post that most of the time "the reverse is true" I meant it literally. I could and have answered the clerks' questions about various translations and editions of the Bible. Nineteen times out of 20 I am older than the store clerks and have read more translations, studied more years, and owned more Bible editions, versions, and reference books than the clerks. Also not to boast, but when I worked at Waldenbooks in the 1970s I was asked by the manager for my recommendations for the Bible section of this new store. The first modern (post-1611 A.D.) version I bought and used regularly was the New American Standard Bible. I went to the bookstore one day in search of a copy of the American Standard Version (1901) only to learn that it was difficult to obtain one. Based on my familiarity with and the reputation of the ASV, I bought the NASB. It was in the single-column format, with side column references, including the translators' notes, cross references, and literal and alternate renderings of words and phrases. I was not dissapointed by the NASB. I was 26 years old when I bought my first one. I have continued to use the NASB (in many editions) for the past 35 years. In my personal library I have approximately 27 different Bible versions, various study Bibles, and a basic collection of Bible reference books, e.g. Vine's, Strong's, Baker's Theological Dictionary, Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, and others. I plan to purchase an interlinear Greek-English NT this summer. As for my pastor, I respect his teaching and judgment. He is well trained in the doctrines of his denomination. But I have been reading the Bible since before he was born and studying it since he was 6 years old. Having said all that, I do appreciate your recommendations and those of others here on the forum. I have often found them to be helpful. Grace to you, Kalos |
