Greetings Steve! Thanks for the info! Having read the information concerning the web sites translation principles, I would advise caution using their translations. They express a very naive approach toward translation. They seem to advocate what I would call a hyper-literal translation method. Here are some of the problems with their proposed method. 1) While consistency in translation is certainly desirable, Greek and Hebrew words can have a variety of meanings depending upon context and usage. One cannot simply translate a particular word in exactly the same way in every context. 2) Words mean more than the sum of their parts. Many Greek words, for instance, are formed as a result of combining two or more words. However, one cannot simply separate the individual words and add them up to arrive at a definition. John MacArthur once used the example of the English word 'independent'. The word doesn't mean, 'in the pen there is a dent'. Neither can Greek words simply be separated out to determine meaning. 3) I haven't found any information about the translator's qualifications, but he seems to be one of those modern breed who have a concordance and think that as a result he can translate the ancient texts. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
