It depends on who you talk to. They say from an angel. A few years ago, I worked with a man whose ancestor, a Presbyterian minister, wrote a fiction book. My friend told me the family story how the man looked for a book agent. Joseph Smith came and offered to get the book published. That ancestor never saw the book again, despite repeated efforts. It was a story about Jesus coming to america and preaching to the Indians. More recently, a man got photo copies of a few of the original pages of the book of Mormon. He took it to some handwriting Experts who agreed one of the pages had the same handwriting as the presbyterian minister. He theorized that Joseph had gotten tired of recopying and inserted a few pages of the original now and then. Both my coworker, and this researcher said a Presbyterian minister wrote the original book of Mormon. greentwiga |

Greentwiga You have some of the fact but I wonder where the rest comes from? The author your talking about is Solomon Spaulding a retired minister that wrote romance novel called "Manuscript Found". Kingdom of the Cults by Dr. Walter Martin, pgs 191-193 Bethany House Publishers I didn't know any orginal manuscript of the Book of Mormon existed. I thought it was lost upon Joseph Smith's death. However if can be proven that the Book of Mormon contains many plagiarisms from the King James Version of the Bible. Anyone really interested should read Dr. Martin's book The Kingdom of the Cults for the complete picture. EdB |

I don't remember how much of the original was left. I can't remember if it was Dr. Martin or another researcher on cults that did the research on handwriting. What was fascinating was meeting a Dr. Spaulding and working with him and hearing the family story directly. Some Joseph Smith just wrote directly, as need arose. I would imagine that Dr. Spaulding and Joseph Smith would have both quoted from the King James. Thanks for reminding me about Dr. Martin's Book, it has been so long since I read it. Greentwiga |

Greentwiga While there are similarly of idea there has never been any indication of any sort of plagiarism between the two books written one by Solomon Spaulding and the other by Joseph Smith. It has been thought that Smith probably got the idea from the Spaulding’s book and greatly expanded upon it. But no apologist I can find ever suggests any plagiarism or makes any reference to any handwriting analysis. Therefore this gets more interesting by the minute. I have never heard it even suggested that their was any plagiarism and to date I can find no reference to any handwriting comparison in any anti cultic, or anti Mormon data base. Something that damning would certainly be held up as proof. The only existing known manuscript of Manuscript Found was found in Hawaii in or around 1834. I believe that manuscript now resides in Oberlin Ohio. This manuscript has been studied and to the best of my knowledge no suggestion of plagiarism has ever been made much less any kind of positive result of handwriting analysis. Since the Book of Mormon was first published in 1830 which says any work of Solomon Spaulding that could have been copied had be done before 1830. That is a very long time and I wonder about your Dr Spauldings information since so much time has elapsed. However I hope you can still contact Dr Spaulding, I think you owe it to everyone to document his information and make it available to many apologetic organizations that could use that information as additional proof of the origin of the Book of Mormon. If you can’t directly get the information yourself at least e-mail me the last known address of your Dr Spaulding and I will contact him and get any information he has into the hands of people that can verify its validity. The King James plagiarism within the Book of Mormon is well documented and even includes scripture that is now considered scribal errors mistakenly included in the King James. EdB |

This must have been the source of what I heard: http://www.lightplanet.com/mormons/response/qa/spaulding.htm Nevertheless, some have continued to promote the Spaulding theory (e.g., see Holley). In 1977, graphologists claimed to have detected similarities between the handwriting of Spaulding and of one of the scribes who transcribed some of the Book of Mormon from Joseph Smith's dictation. After considerable media attention and further scrutiny, anti-Mormon spokespersons acknowledged that they had been too hasty. The handwriting evidence did not support a connection between Solomon Spaulding and Joseph Smith. The Question was, did they change their mind because of heavy pressure from the Mormons, to be politically correct, or because they had made a real mistake? The site also says: Hurlbut set out in the ensuing months to refute Joseph Smith´s claims for the origins of the Book of Mormon. He interviewed members of Spaulding´s family, who swore that there were precise similarities between Spaulding´s work and the Book of Mormon. If the family members swore then that there were the similarities, they would have passed the information down. If you hear the story from a dear trusted family member and a different one from the newspaper, which would you believe? I would believe the parent or grandparent. I don't think that contacting the family member would add anything. If you still want, email me. Greentwiga |

Greentwiga I must have misunderstood I thought you had new evidence. I didn't realize this information came from some individual's website. As I said in my first post in this thread, for anyone interested in the complete accurate story on this subject read Kingdom of the Cults by Dr. Walter Martin published by Bethany House. The Book of Mormon has been repeatedly proved to be a falsehood and there are verifiable and provable facts listed in Dr. Martin's book that support that conclusion. Dr. Martin even speaks to the claim that some portion (most probably the historical idea or story line) was what gave Joseph Smith the basis for his story line. However there is no suggestion of any plagiarism or even worst actual pages of Spaulding's work. That is not an newspaper account or hearsay that is the result of research and study. The facts and just the facts. EdB |

I was quoting my friend and what I had heard about 1977. I had not quoted this site. I just found it when you challenged me. Thanks for updating my facts. I thought the infor was correct, but it had been changed (the handwriting) after I heard it. Since then, I have more focused on eastern religions to witness to them, and haven't kept up to date on Mormons. Greentwiga |
