How important is the Torah (first 5 books of the bible)? What does Matthew 5:17-18 mean to the everyday Christian? According to some teachers of Messianic Judiasm, the Torah is the focal point of the ENTIRE bible, from Genesis to Revelation. It has been explained to me that everything Jesus did or said referred back to Torah, and that Torah (the law) is FOREVER. If Torah is FOREVER, then where does the NEW covenant come in? I could really use some clarification. | ||||||

shpagach The law or Old covenant was made between perfect (God) and imperfect (man). God always kept His end of the covenant but man strayed from his. God then provided a way for man to be restored back under the covenant by sacrifice. However it wasn’t a permanent solution and man allowed himself to become legalistic focusing on the law rather the intent of the law. Jesus came to fulfill the Law, and a New Covenant was made, between perfect (God) and perfect (Jesus the Son). Man then can become partakers of this covenant by his belief in Jesus Christ the fulfillment of the Old Covenant and the maker of the New Covenant. The Law never changed only the focus changed, the law was given to direct man lives to live pleasing to God, Jesus us gave us the freedom from sin to it. The focus is now once again restored to the intent of the law not the law itself. EdB |
