Do wisdom and discernment mean the same thing? No not really "discernment" is the collecting of knowledge, understanding, insight and the "wisdom" is knowing what to do with it. Below I provided to excerpts from Practical Word Studied of the New Testament as presented by Wordsearch Phil. 1:9 [KJV] And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; [NASB] And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, [NIV] And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, [NKJV] And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, [NLT] I pray that your love for each other will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in your knowledge and understanding. THE WORD MEANS... Insight, judgment, discernment, understanding, intelligence. Practical Application Love in the Bible never focuses upon good feelings. Feelings may and usually do come to the person who truly loves another person, but feelings are never the focus—not with true love. What then is the focus? The focus of love is knowledge. If we truly love someone, we want to know that person. In fact, we want to know all we can about the person. The force of love is discernment. If we truly love someone, we not only want to know a person but we want to learn all we can about the person. We want to gather all the intelligence and facts possible and discern them so that we can please the person. Luke 2:40 [KJV] And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. [NASB] And the Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him. [NIV] And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. [NKJV] And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him. [NLT] There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom beyond his years, and God placed his special favor upon him. THE WORD MEANS... Understanding, insight, common sense, prudence, discretion, tact, diplomacy. Practical Application The word 'wisdom' means seeing and knowing the truth. It is seeing and knowing what to do. It grasps the great truths of life. It sees the answers to the problems of life and death, God and man, time and eternity, good and evil—the deep things of God and of the universe. This wisdom is found only in Jesus Christ and is promised only to those who search after Him with all their hearts (1 Cor. 1:30; 1 Cor. 2:10-16; Ephes. 1:8; Phil. 2:5f; James 1:5). EdB |
