I was in a class on theology at seminary school. The teacher said there were three philosophies of religion. He did not say what they were. Can someone tell me what they are? |

While I never heard it referred to in this manner I imagine he is talking about 1 A believer. A person that believe in a higher power. Could be any religion and could be any number of Gods or Goddesses. 2. Atheist. The person that makes a religion of claiming there is no God. 3. An agnostic. The person that almost tries to sit on both sides of the fence. His prayer would be, “Dear God if there is a God and if you can hear me please help me if you can help me.” Some define this philosophy as not being able to know God. EdB |

I believe that an agnostic may not be so much someone who doesn't know whether there is a God or not. Rather, an agnostic is more likely someone who devoutly believes that there is a God, but that God is completely unknowable to mortal human beings. A gnostic, likewise, is someone who believes that God can be approached through amassing greater knowledge, through the fervent study of books and such. - Hence, you have four categories here. Believer, Atheist, Gnostic and Agnostic |

Kalos, I'm wondering if there may be additional interpretations of agnosticism. Also, is there a converse interpretation of gnosticism? - Reighnskye |

Gnosticism defined Reighnskye: 'Gnosticism. A theological error prevalent around the time of Christ. Generally speaking, Gnosticism taught that salvation is achieved through special knowledge (gnosis). This knowledge usually dealt with the individual's relationship to the transcendent Being. It denies the incarnation of God as the Son. In so doing, it denies the true efficacy of the atonement since, if Jesus is not God, He could not atone for all of mankind and we would still be lost in our sins.' [(http://www.carm.org/dictionary/dic_g-h.htm#Gnosticism) Please see "Heresies" for more information.] One can always find additional interpretations. What I have presented is a definition. Grace to you, Kalos |

Thanks, Kalos. I had heard a similar thing going back about twenty years. If one could be saved through pure knowledge (gnosis), then we would not necessarily need Christ or the Holy Spirit. - Reighnskye |
