1 | do i have to worship loudly? | Bible general Archive 2 | rjcbp | 124869
I have a 17 year old son who is so filled with the spirt. I am so proud of him. He goes to church and he volunteers daily at a inner city mission. The problem is that his "Friend" is telling him he is spiritualy dead. WHY? because I was raised a mennonite, and now attend a baptist church. I am not comfortable raising my hand and shouting and singing loudly and dancing. That is not how I worship. The "friend" tells me that is in direct conflict with wha the bible says and untill I start, I am going to hell. Any comments?

Greetings and welcome to the forum! First let me say that you will not go to hell. You go to hell on the condition of your heart - not on how you praise. I somewhat agree with what Norm said but I want to add to it. Most of the time instead of the singing part of the service being called worship it is called "praise and worship". Services should be a mixture of both praise and worship. Worship is quieter and more reverant. Praise is the opposite. Praise is as Norm said - making a joyful noise to the Lord. Darlene Zschech ( a well known praise and worship leader) said it this way in her book"Extravagant Worship": "Praise is not a happy-clappy song. Praise is not the fast songs before the nice, slow worship songs. Praise is a declaration, a victory cry, proclaiming faith to stand firm in the place God has given you. does tell us to shout and dance in praise to the Lord. SHOUT! Darlene Zschech defines shout this way: A shout commmands attention. A shout demonstates enthusiasm, confidence and determination. Psa 47:1b Clap your hands, all you people. Shout to God with a loud, joyful song. Psa 98:6 with trumpets and the playing of a ram's horn. Shout happily in the presence of the king, the LORD God also does tell us to dance: 1Sa 18:6b They sang and danced, accompanied by tambourines, joyful music, and triangles. 2Sa 6:14 David danced in the LORD'S presence with all his might. Exo 15:20 Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand. All the women, dancing with tambourines, followed her. . . So many people were brought up as you were where shouting, dancing and singing makes you uncomfortable. I was brought up that way. The first time I went to a pentecostal church I was very uncomfortable but there was a spirit there that kept drawing me back. Once I finally shook off the "uncomfortableness" I experienced a freedom that I never imagined. The bible does tell us to make a joyful noise (see list of scriptures from Norm). The God's Word translation uses the word "shout" instead of joyful noise. I will leave you with something that someone left me with years ago that helped me alot. Do you like to go to a sports event - like a football game or a basketball game. Imagine yourself in a situation of great excitement, such as your favotite team just scored a touchdown. Now I ask you these question. You jump and scream at the top of your lungs at the touchdown, but just what did that football touchdown ever do for you? On the other hand we have Jesus who died an extremely agonizing death for you so that you could have life, who comforts you, provides for you protects you and you don't feel comfortable shouting praises to Him? When I thought about that I got the point. I forced myself over my uncomfort. I hope you will do the same. Go to a place where you are totally alone and just yell Haleluja and Thank you Jesus repeatedly as loud as you can. I promise you that you will start feeling more comfortable about it. Psa 98:1 A psalm. Sing a new song to the LORD because he has done miraculous things. As for your son- At 17 he is old enough to make the decision for himself. Let him experience the different types of praise and worship. Your son is not spiritually dead but there may just be a part of the Holy Spirit that is "locked away" that his friend will help him to let out. As for his friend - tellhim that I understand where he is coming from due to my past experience. He knows the power that praise and worship can let loose in a life and he wants to share it. Tell him for me that his enthusiasm is commendable - especially for teens today but that he should share the joy he found without being judgemental of peoples lives. Tell him also what I told you in the first sentence. Thanks. Have a blessed day. I hope I have helped in some way. prayon |
